Chapter 649: If You Die, Life Won't Have Tragedies
Chapter 649: If You Die, Life Won’t Have Tragedies
The Birdcage had finally been unleashed.
Threads crisscrossed the sky like prison bars, covering the entire nation. The density of these lines was so thick that no one could possibly pass through them.
Lida, holding a cake from Baby-5 in one hand and pouring tea with the other, glanced upward. “Tch, so many threads.”
Beyond the encirclement trapping the country like a cage, more threads descended from the heavens. In terms of perception, they had already subdued countless pirates and former kingdom soldiers.
Kuro always acted based on principles.
Even if he could manipulate everything like the Dao of “One Generating the Ten Thousand Things,” the “One” represented the Civilian. Officials, Revolutionary Army members, Navy, pirates, soldiers, rioters, and even street thugs—all were originally Civilians before assuming their roles.
Civilians were, of course, innocent and required Navy protection.
However, once Civilians “advanced” into other professions, they naturally lost the Navy’s safeguard. As for those people, Kuro wouldn’t intervene.
As for Donquixote Doflamingo, to Kuro, this man was dangerous but also understood the rules. Unlike those chaotic individuals who acted solely on personal whims, Donquixote was different.
Right, he was practically ready to recite Luffy’s ID number.
“Kshhhkshhkshh, are you comparing me to those little brats? Golden Lion—do you even know if you’re arrogant or just cowardly?”
Donquixote Doflamingo’s blue veins throbbed more visibly on his temples. “I feel deeply insulted.”
“That’s your own problem. If I were you, after surviving the Grand Line for so long, getting outmaneuvered by two brats would’ve made me want to die of shame.”
Kuro chuckled mockingly. “If I were you, I’d have killed myself already.”
“You—” Donquixote Doflamingo’s expression darkened.
Although Vegapunk was a terrifying monster, Kuro wasn’t afraid of him.
As Vegapunk himself had said, he was merely a rookie, holding an Admiral’s title in name only. Perhaps he had influence in the world, but within the Navy, his weight wasn’t that significant.
This man, however, was entirely different. His methods and strength embodied the old guard’s old guard. Such people were extremely difficult to deal with, but as long as one followed their “game rules,” one could stay safe.
Thinking of this, Donquixote Doflamingo chuckled mockingly. “If you were leading this operation, things would’ve been simpler. Kuro, I heard you couldn’t become an Admiral because you’re Lucius Kro’s protégé. What a shame. The World Government is always so shortsighted. They don’t understand that someone who follows rules is completely different from someone who only acts on personal desires.”
Donquixote Doflamingo already knew Vegapunk’s stance.
Abolishing the Seven Warlords of the Sea was too naive.
He wasn’t afraid of Vegapunk, not even of Sakazuki, and certainly not the World Government. But this man? He made Donquixote uneasy.
Yet he knew clearly—the man had no intention of abolishing the Seven Warlords system.
“Ah, so don’t fail, okay?”
Kuro looked downward, his gaze fixed on Vegapunk’s aura.
“Yi Xiaobrother has his own agenda. I affirm I can’t stop him. But don’t expect me to help you, you trash of the sea. You’re on your own. Your outcome depends entirely on your performance.”
Donquixote Doflamingo was dangerous, yes, but his threat level wasn’t that high. At least compared to the Four Emperors, his danger was still within the World Government’s tolerance—and under the Navy’s control.
As he claimed, he held the reins of the New World’s chaos.
This guy didn’t just sell weapons. He traded abilities, intelligence—anything sellable. His clients ranged from kingdoms to pirates. Even the World Government used him as an intermediary to intervene in the New World.
If he fell, the balance would collapse.
The New World was already a slaughterhouse for pirates and non-member states. Donquixote’s existence provided strength to both sides, preventing a decisive outcome too soon.
After all, the last thing war profiteers wanted was peace.
Allowing Donquixote to remain had drawbacks, but also benefits. It kept the New World’s slaughter at maximum intensity. If this bloodshed ended, violent criminal groups led by the strong would expand their influence until the New World stabilized.
Once the New World stabilized, pirates would turn their eyes to the first half of the Grand Line and the Four Seas—making the Navy’s job far more difficult.
But then again, the region he ruled was truly a mess. Defeating him wouldn’t be a bad thing.
After all, the Navy wasn’t here to clean up after pirates.
Kuro glanced at Donquixote Doflamingo. “If two brats can defeat you, you’d be better off dying.”
Crocodile and Gecko Moria’s defeats were utterly absurd in Kuro’s eyes.
Luffy, though Garp’s grandson and inheritor of Garp’s innate talent, had defeated them in what seemed like a joke. Kuro couldn’t fathom how it happened.
How did he do it?
“Kshhhkshhkshh, rest assured—I won’t lose.”
Donquixote Doflamingo grinned maliciously at the sky. “I won’t fall until I’ve brought down those people!”
“Let’s go, Lida.”
Kuro shot Donquixote Doflamingo a glance. “We’re heading down.”
“Okay.”
Lida licked her fingers, set down her teacup, and watched as a rock beneath her feet separated from the ground. Carrying her and Kuro, it soared downward.
Dressrosa had become a battlefield.
Besides Civilians, those transformed from toys included pirates and rioters who had entered Dressrosa over the years. Compared to the small number of Civilians, these pirates were far more numerous. Most Civilians were created a decade ago when Donquixote Doflamingo seized the throne, part of his efforts to conceal the truth.
For ten years, pirates continuously entered Dressrosa, only to be transformed into toys. In underground factories, they hauled weapons and became playthings for the citizens.
Now, reverting to humans, they naturally began wreaking destruction.
“Kill!”
Pirates brandished weapons, slaughtering each other.
“Wait, why can’t we control ourselves? I don’t want to fight you!”
“Damn it, stop! Why are you attacking me?!”
Pirates split into two factions. One group roared, their bodies attacking others uncontrollably.
The other faction, though claiming reluctance, fought ruthlessly.
“Tch, how pitiful. Finally free, yet forced back into combat.”
Kuro shook his head, his expression sorrowful. “I hate seeing tragedies the most.”
Swish!
Black Radiance flashed as Kuro drew his blade.
Hiss!!
Instantly, the battling pirates froze, their heads severed in a spray of blood.
“So, I’ll help you end this tragedy.”
Kuro smiled faintly. “If you die, life won’t have any tragedies anymore.”
