Chapter 645: The Trap
Chapter 645: The Trap
In an abandoned residential building, a group of gunmen and several burly fighters hid in the narrow corridors and doorless rooms, holding their breath and focusing intently as they awaited the arrival of Wu Han and Wei Dong.
These individuals were all part of the same mercenary team, instructed by a particular client to lure the two men into a fake kidnapping situation. According to the client's request, they were to capture the two alive if possible.
As they watched, Wu Han and Wei Dong stopped in front of the building, and the mercenaries had already prepared for their arrival. However, to their surprise, the two men exchanged a few words and then began to retreat.
"What's going on?"
"Why are they leaving?"
"Did someone expose us?"
The mercenaries were suddenly alarmed. Had they made a mistake that tipped off the targets? If the two men left, the client's task would be impossible to complete.
The leader roared, "Damn it! Never mind, go! Get them and keep them here!"
Instantly, several fighters broke through the walls and charged out, while the gunmen positioned themselves at the windows and began firing at the two men from a distance.
Wei Dong and Wu Han were about to enter the building, and they might have been caught off guard at that moment. However, they were now outside and had heightened their vigilance. As the sound of rapid footsteps echoed from within the building, the two men exchanged a glance and immediately split up, running in opposite directions.
Just then, a barrage of bullets rained down behind them, but not a single shot hit its mark. The fighters, once they started running, moved with incredible speed, making it nearly impossible for even skilled marksmen to hit them.
As the fighters landed, they charged straight towards the two men.
This time, five fighters from the mercenary team joined the pursuit. All of them were middle-aged men in their thirties and forties, with two heading towards Wu Han and three towards Wei Dong.
The three fighters rushing towards Wei Dong were among the more capable ones in the group. Their plan was to detain Wu Han first, then focus their strength on Wei Dong, assuming that dealing with Wei Dong alone would be easier.
Wu Han ran for a while, quickly moving out of the line of fire and turning into an area out of the mercenaries' sight.
However, the two fighters following him were experienced and didn't rush into action. They trailed behind him, maintaining a safe distance.
Wu Han had seen Wei Dong being surrounded by the three fighters, and under normal circumstances, he didn't think they could pose much of a threat to Wei Dong. However, the situation was unusual, so he didn't run far. After reaching an open area, he stopped and turned to face the two fighters.
The two fighters wielded iron chains, and when they saw Wu Han stop, they halted as well, but they didn't initiate an attack.
Their task was to delay Wu Han. If he didn't make a move, they wouldn't either. They were waiting for their teammates to finish with Wei Dong so they could join forces against Wu Han, which would be easier.
They prioritized Wei Dong because he was a student at the Wu Yi Academy, and they knew he wasn't an ordinary opponent. Therefore, they allocated their main force to deal with him.
What they didn't know was that Wu Han was also from the Wu Yi Academy and had undergone proper fighter training. He had extensive combat experience and regularly used special medicines due to the nature of his assignments.
Wu Han faced the two fighters, discarded the gun on his back, and leaned forward. With a powerful push from his feet, he charged towards one of them.
The fighter in front raised his long sword vertically, ready to block the attack. The other fighter also prepared, rattling his iron chain as he readied to assist.
But within a short distance, Wu Han closed in to within two or three meters of his target. He appeared ready to thrust his gun forward, but in a swift move, he curled his middle and index fingers around the gun and reversed his grip, then, harnessing the momentum of his charge, he hurled the gun forward with tremendous force!
The force of the throw was so powerful that as the gun left his hand, his entire body was lifted momentarily into the air.
The fighter facing him was caught off guard by the sudden close-range throw and had no time to react. The gun pierced through his mouth and exited through the back of his head.
As the other fighter was charging towards them, Wu Han seized the moment and continued his forward momentum, using the first fighter's body as a shield, blocking the view of his own body.
The charging fighter saw the gun protruding from the back of his comrade's head and hesitated for a moment. Suddenly, the corpse of his comrade was pushed forward, flying towards him.
He quickly dodged to the side, allowing the corpse to pass by, but he couldn't spot Wu Han nearby. Confused, he turned his head, only to see Wu Han clinging to the flying body, staring intently at him. His eyes widened in surprise.
Before the fighter could react appropriately, Wu Han moved swiftly. He grabbed the flying man's head with one arm and clasped it, then, using the momentum of the body, he wrenched it sideways with his other hand, snapping the man's neck with a loud crack.
Wu Han landed, allowing the corpse in his arms to fall to the ground. He immediately turned and sprinted away, pulling out a short gun from another corpse as he ran. He wiped the thick bloodstains on the gun's sleeve and continued running towards Wei Dong without stopping.
Behind them, Lao Qi was originally waiting in the car, responsible for negotiations, support, route planning, and various logistical tasks while the two carried out the commission.
Although he was not a fighter, Lao Qi was an experienced commissioner, proficient in the use of various firearms and possessing a certain degree of combat ability.
When he heard the gunshots, his instincts kicked in, and he immediately looked towards the distance, spotting the two being pursued.
Lao Qi reacted swiftly, jumping out of the car and rushing to the trunk. He pulled out a box, quickly opening it to reveal a combat mantis they had accidentally acquired during a previous commission.
Using this contraption required a high-energy nutrient solution, which was genuinely expensive. They had to pool their money to afford just two vials.
Following the instructions, Lao Qi swiftly injected the high-energy nutrient solution, and within moments, the combat mantis tore through the thick packaging and leaped out.
Lao Qi made a gesture, pointing forward, and the combat mantis immediately sprang forward, unfolding its wings mid-air and transforming into a fleeting shadow, charging towards the gunmen emerging from the building.
The group of gunmen, knowing their opponents were unarmed, had rushed out without any formation. But suddenly, a gray shadow flashed, and the leader was slashed in half with a swish.
The rest of the group was startled, only to see a figure crouching on the building's balcony, its compound eyes glowing red, and two sharp foot blades prominently displayed.
One of the gunmen shouted, "Combat creature!"
Ignoring the pursuit, they immediately raised their guns and fired, but the combat mantis descended upon them. The bullets bounced off its hard shell as if hitting metal, and with a swift swing of its foot blades, it beheaded another gunman. It then leaped into the crowd, impaling a screaming individual with its sharp belly feet.
Combat creatures and combat mantises are different. The combat mantis, a classic model from the Compound Eye Company, is incredibly fast, capable of flight, and possesses formidable strength. Even a slightly weaker Third Limitation Fighter would struggle to defeat it, let alone these gunmen with standard military implants.
One after another, the gunmen were killed in a short span of time. Sensing the danger, the rest scattered and fled, but the combat mantis was too quick, finishing them off without missing a single one. It only stopped after beheading the last person a kilometer away.
On the other hand, Wu Han had already reached Wei Dong when the combat mantis charged into the gunmen. However, he halted in his tracks, noticing that the three fighters who had surrounded Wei Dong were now lying on the ground. He was adjusting his bloodstained fist wraps.
Wu Han muttered, "Good job, kid."
He estimated that the fighters had assessed Wei Dong's strength based on the average Wu Yi Academy student, but the reality was quite different. Wei Dong had passed the local Wu Yi Academy entrance exam.
Lao Qi hurried over and asked, "What happened?"
Wu Han replied, "This commission is probably a trap. You two wait here; I'll go check it out."
He went to inspect the civilian house and found that the supposed kidnapped person was just a dummy. They couldn't even be bothered to set up a proper ruse. If it weren't for Wei Dong's warning, they might have fallen for it.
Being trapped in a narrow room with over a dozen guns, there was no chance of escape. Wei Dong's Iron Body might have given him a fighting chance, but his fate was uncertain.
Wu Han thought for a moment, then pulled down the dummy, not caring if it was real or fake. Their commission was considered complete, and they had found the "person," so they deserved their payment.
He returned outside and discussed the situation with Wei Dong and Lao Qi. They agreed that it was not a simple matter, so they immediately contacted Chen Chuan. After connecting, Wu Han briefed him on the situation.
Chen Chuan's eyes narrowed as he listened, then said, "For the next couple of days, don't take on any commissions. I'll notify you once I've handled things on my end."
"Okay, then we'll take a break for now."
After ending the call, Chen Chuan went to the balcony of the house and contacted Gao Ming. After a while, Gao Ming answered, and Chen Chuan said, "Gao Ming, is everything alright on your end?"
Gao Ming smiled and replied, "Brother, I'm currently handling several important clients with significant influence. The agency won't allow a mid-task replacement, and today, I'm staying in the safe house. I'll wait here until you resolve your situation."
Chen Chuan acknowledged, "Alright, we'll do it this way."
After the call, he looked outside. According to the Pure Essence Sect's teachings, the matter would have a resolution by noon today. With two hours remaining until then, he decided to wait. If it remained unresolved by then, he would take matters into his own hands.
