Chapter 645: The Trap
Chapter 645: The Trap
Within the abandoned house, a group of ten gunmen and several burly fighters hid in the narrow corridors and doorless rooms, holding their breath and focusing their minds, waiting for Wu Han and Wei Dong to enter.
These individuals belonged to the same mercenary team, and according to a certain client's instructions, they had staged a fake kidnapping to lure the two into a trap, intending to capture them alive as per the client's request.
Just then, they saw Wu Han and Wei Dong stop outside the building, and they had already prepared themselves, but to their surprise, the two seemed to hesitate and start retreating.
"What's going on?"
"Why are they leaving?"
"Did someone expose us?"
They panicked, fearing that they had made a mistake. If the two escaped, the client's task would be incomplete.
The leader roared, "Damn it, never mind! Go and get them!"
Instantly, several fighters burst through the walls and charged out, while a few gunmen positioned themselves at the windows, firing at the two from a distance.
Wei Dong and Wu Han, who were about to enter the building, might have been caught off guard, but now they were outside, aware of the danger. Hearing the rapid footsteps inside, they exchanged a glance and split up, running in opposite directions.
Bullets rained down behind them, but not a single shot hit its mark. The fighters, once in motion, moved with incredible speed, making it nearly impossible for the gunmen to hit their targets.
As the fighters landed, they dashed towards the two.
Five members of the mercenary team engaged, all middle-aged men in their thirties and forties. Two headed towards Wu Han, while three charged at Wei Dong.
The three rushing at Wei Dong were the more capable ones, aiming to detain Wu Han while focusing on Wei Dong first. With Wei Dong dealt with, Wu Han alone wouldn't pose much of a threat.
Wu Han ran for a while, moving away from the gunfire, and reached an open area where he stopped, turning to face the two fighters.
The two fighters wielded iron chains, and seeing Wu Han halt, they paused as well, refraining from attacking.
Their task was to delay, and if Wu Han didn't move, they wouldn't either. They planned to wait for Wei Dong's capture and then join forces to handle Wu Han more easily.
They prioritized Wei Dong because he was a student of Wu Yi Academy, and they knew he wasn't an ordinary opponent. Thus, they allocated more resources to him.
What they didn't know was that Wu Han was also from Wu Yi, trained in the traditional fighting system, and had ample real-world experience. Moreover, due to his frequent missions, he had access to various enhancing drugs.
Wu Han, facing the two fighters, discarded his backpack, leaned forward, and propelled himself towards one of them.
The fighter ahead raised his sword, blocking the centerline, ready to parry. Meanwhile, the other fighter rattled his iron chain, prepared to assist from the side.
In a brief moment, Wu Han closed the distance to within two or three meters, appearing to thrust his spear. But suddenly, he twisted his middle and index fingers around the spear, changing his grip from outward to inward, and with the momentum of his charge, he hurled the spear forward with tremendous force!
The force was so strong that when the spear left his hand, his entire body seemed to float in the air for an instant.
The fighter facing him was caught off guard by the unexpected spear throw at such a close range and had no time to react. The spear pierced through his mouth and exited from the back of his head.
At that moment, the other fighter was still rushing towards them, and Wu Han, seizing the momentum, lunged forward, using the first fighter's body as a shield, blocking his view.
The charging fighter, seeing the spear protruding from the back of his comrade's head, hesitated, and in that instant, the corpse was pushed towards him, flying in his direction.
He quickly dodged to the side, allowing the corpse to pass by, but he couldn't spot Wu Han. Confused, he turned around, only to realize that Wu Han had latched onto the flying body, staring intently at him. His eyes widened in shock.
Before he could react, Wu Han's figure flickered, and he leaped forward, extending both arms in mid-air to embrace the fighter's head with one arm while securing his neck with the other. With a swift motion, he twisted the fighter's head sideways, breaking it with a loud crack.
Wu Han landed and allowed the corpse in his hand to drop to the ground. Without hesitation, he turned and sprinted towards Wei Dong, pulling out a short gun from another corpse along the way. He wiped the thick bloodstains on his sleeve and continued running without stopping.
Behind him, Lao Qi, an experienced mission handler, waited in the car. While Wu Han and Wei Dong executed the mission, Lao Qi handled negotiations, provided transportation, planned routes, and managed various logistical tasks.
Although Lao Qi wasn't a fighter himself, he was well-versed in the use of various firearms and possessed a certain degree of combat prowess.
When he heard the gunshots, his instincts kicked in, and he immediately looked into the distance, spotting two people being chased.
Reacting swiftly, Lao Qi jumped out of the car and ran to the trunk, where he pulled out a box containing a Fighting Mantaray that they had accidentally acquired during a previous mission.
To activate this creature, they needed High-Energy Nutrients, an expensive resource. Together, they had barely managed to scrape enough money to buy two doses.
Following the instructions, Lao Qi quickly injected the High-Energy Nutrients into the Fighting Mantaray, and within moments, it tore through its thick packaging and leaped out.
Lao Qi made a gesture and pointed forward. The Fighting Mantaray immediately hopped ahead, unfurling its wings and transforming into a blur of motion as it charged towards the gunmen who had emerged from the building.
The group of gunmen, knowing their opponents were unarmed, had rushed out without any formation. However, at that moment, a gray shadow flashed, and a sharp sound echoed as the man at the front was suddenly split in two.
The crowd was startled, and they saw a figure crouched on the building's balcony, its compound eyes glaring at them. Two sharp foot blades stood out prominently.
One of the gunmen shouted, "Combat Insect!"
Ignoring the pursuit, the gunmen immediately raised their guns and fired. But the Fighting Mantaray descended upon them, deflecting bullets off its hard shell as if they were hitting metal. With a swift swing of its foot blades, it beheaded another gunman. It leaped into the crowd, impaling a screaming man with its sharp forelegs.
Combat Insects were different from other combat creatures. The Fighting Mantaray, a classic model from the Compound Eye Corporation, was incredibly fast and capable of flight. Even a slightly weaker Second Limit Fighter would struggle to defeat it, let alone these gunmen with standard military implants.
One by one, the gunmen were killed in a short span of time. Realizing the dire situation, the remaining gunmen scattered and fled, but to no avail. The Fighting Mantaray's speed was exceptional, and it swiftly dispatched each of them, leaving none alive. It only stopped after beheading the last gunman a kilometer away.
Meanwhile, Wu Han, having reached Wei Dong, witnessed the three fighters who had surrounded Wei Dong lying on the ground. Wei Dong was tidying up his own bloodstained clothes.
Wu Han chuckled, "You little rascal."
He guessed that the fighters had underestimated Wei Dong, judging him by the standards of a typical Wu Yi Academy student. But in reality, Wei Dong had passed the local Wu Yi exams.
Lao Qi, who had rushed over, asked, "What happened?"
Wu Han replied, "This mission was probably a trap. Wait here, I'll go check it out."
He went into the abandoned house alone and found that the supposed hostage was just a dummy. They couldn't even be bothered to set up a proper fake hostage. If it weren't for Wei Dong's warning, they might have failed this mission.
In such a narrow room, there was no chance of escape. Wei Dong, with his Iron Body Technique, might have had a chance to break out, but he could have been in real trouble."
After some thought, Wu Han grabbed the dummy and pulled it down. Whether it was real or fake, their mission was technically accomplished. The "person" had been found, and they deserved their payment.
Returning outside, Wu Han discussed the situation with Wei Dong and Lao Qi. They agreed that something was amiss, so Wu Han immediately contacted Chen Chuan. After connecting, he explained the situation.
Chen Chuan listened intently, his gaze turning thoughtful. "For the next few days, don't take on any missions. I'll notify you once I've handled this matter."
"Okay, we'll take a break for now."
After ending the call with Chen Chuan, he gazed out, recalling the Pureline Sect's teachings. According to them, by noon today, this matter would have a resolution. It was currently two hours before noon, so he decided to wait. If the issue remained unresolved by then, he would take matters into his own hands.
