After the banquet, Zong Shimen and Hu Zhifeng went their separate ways, one concerned about the children at home and eager to return, while the other headed back to the office to continue work.
Yu Metong didn't have a car, so Zong Shimen offered to drive her back.
Once the car exited the garage and onto the main road, Zong Shimen finally spoke up, "MeiTong, is it really that Jiang Yuan has a bad cold and can't make it, and it's not because of some other reason?"
It felt too coincidental, and people like them instinctively viewed such coincidences with suspicion.
Yu Metong let out a bitter laugh, "You can't hide it from you, Sister Shimen. It's true that it's not because of a bad cold."

Zong Shimen hated these kinds of lingering relationships and said with displeasure, "Since he can't let go of his ex-girlfriend, he shouldn't be wasting your time!"
Seeing that Yu Metong didn't respond, Zong Shimen coldly huffed, "Regardless of the reason, you are his girlfriend now, and he should at least inform you before meeting up with his ex, to spare you from being upset. But not only did he meet her in secret, but he also accompanied her to the hospital. Yu Metong remained silent for a moment before speaking, "I sent him a message last night, reminding him about today's engagement banquet for Nie Zhan and Jiahxin. But by the time I left for the hotel, I still hadn't received a reply. In a fit of anger, I broke up with him."
Zong Shimen thought the breakup was the right decision, "It's for the best. It's better to end things early with someone who isn't clear-headed. With your looks, Sister will definitely find you a better match."
Yu Metong was actually quite frustrated, "Before his ex-girlfriend returned, our relationship was going well. I was even planning to meet his parents next month and get engaged by the end of the year."
It wasn't that she was deeply heartbroken. Having been hurt badly by Fu Ye in the past, she hadn't invested as much emotionally in this relationship. However, encountering such an incident naturally left her feeling down.
Yu Metong expressed her confusion, "If he still has feelings for his ex-girlfriend, why did he pursue me? I've made it clear that I hate it when people aren't loyal in relationships."
As someone who had been through similar experiences, Zong Shimen had the right to speak, "It's because he thinks he's being loyal. To him, meeting his ex-girlfriend is just a reunion after a long time apart, and you're the one overthinking it."
Just like Hu Zhifeng, even if he had an affair and fathered a child outside of marriage, he still considered himself a good husband and father. The only reason she hadn't made a scene was that she didn't plan to divorce him and give that woman a chance. If she had the same leverage as Jiahxin, she would have kicked him out as soon as she found out about his affair.
Yu Metong nodded, "Sister Shimen, let's not tell Jiahxin about this for now. We'll wait a few days before telling her to avoid affecting her mood."
Zong Shimen shook her head with a smile, "I won't say anything, but Jiahxin will find out about your breakup soon enough."
"She's probably very busy these days. I'll tell her myself in a few days."
Zong Shimen patted her hand and said, "Don't overthink it. It's a good thing that you found out now, rather than after you're married. That would have been a real loss."
Yu Metong shook her head, "Sister Shimen, I'm fine. I just feel unlucky that I keep meeting men who aren't loyal. Is it really that hard to find someone who's committed?"
She wasn't saying that Jiang Yuan shouldn't meet his ex-girlfriend, but he should at least have the courtesy to inform her beforehand.
Yu Meiting smiled bitterly at these words, "Now what is this?!"
Zong Shimen scoffed, "It's not that you're lucky, it's just that most men find the wildflowers outside more alluring than the wife at home. Focus on your work, strive to become a design director, and when you're earning millions a year, you can choose whoever you want."
Yu Meiting smiled at these words, "Yes, I need to work hard and strive for that million-dollar salary soon."
Zong Shimen dropped Yu Meiting off at the entrance of her residential compound and made plans to have afternoon tea together on Sunday.
As Yu Meiting waited for the elevator downstairs, Jiang Yuanku called, asking, "Meiting, where are you now?"
Yu Meiting didn't scold him, she simply asked, "I'm at home now. If you have time, let's meet up."
Half an hour later, Yu Meiting waited for Jiang Yuanku at a coffee shop near her compound. Seeing that he was wearing clothes she had never seen before, a cold smile crossed her lips.
As soon as Jiang Yuanku sat down, he said, "Meiting, there's nothing going on between me and Weiwei. She wasn't feeling well and didn't want our families to worry, so she asked me to accompany her to the hospital. Even though we broke up, our mothers are longtime friends, so I couldn't refuse."
Yu Meiting remained silent.
Jiang Yuanku said with difficulty, "A few days ago, I took her to the hospital. Yesterday afternoon, we got the test results—early-stage breast cancer. Weiwei couldn't accept it and wanted to do something foolish, so I stayed to take care of her because I was worried."
Yu Meiting stirred her coffee with a spoon and listened to him. After he finished speaking, she asked, "Is that all?"
Jiang Yuanku reached out to hold Yu Meiting's hand, but she avoided his grasp. "Meiting,"
Yu Meiting put down her spoon, "You're not wrong, I am. Jiang Yuanku, I feel we're not suitable for each other. If we're not, then let's not waste each other's time."
Jiang Yuanku refused to accept this, "How can we be unsuitable? Just last week, we were discussing meeting my parents next month and finalizing our engagement plans."
Yu Meiting's expression didn't change, "Jiang Yuanku, before we started dating, I made it clear that I expect loyalty in a relationship. I won't accept a man who has a wandering eye."
Jiang Yuanku's face changed drastically, "Meiting, Weiwei is history. The person I love now is you."
Yu Meiting shook her head, "I don't love you anymore. Let's part ways amicably."
The reason she agreed to meet him was that she felt breaking up via text message was disrespectful. She wanted to clarify things face-to-face.
Jiang Yuanku panicked, "Meiting, if you're that bothered, I won't see Weiwei again."
Yu Meiting laughed, "Do you still think I'm breaking up with you because of Weiwei? Jiang Yuanku, we're truly not suitable."
The reasons for her decision were twofold: first, Jiang Yuanku's feelings were impure, and second, she felt he didn't trust her. A relationship without trust was doomed to fail eventually, so it was better to end it now.
Seeing her resolute attitude, Jiang Yuanku knew that continuing to argue was futile, "I know you're angry right now. Let's talk again once you've calmed down."
Yu Meiting replied calmly, "Many people can remain friends after a breakup, but I can't. For me, a breakup means we no longer keep in touch."
Although she spoke lightly, her heart was heavy. Back at home, she felt listless and unmotivated. She called a few friends and arranged to go clubbing to lift her spirits. She had been feeling repressed lately and needed to unwind.
After drinking too much at the club and becoming hazy, she woke up in a hotel room and was scared. Thankfully, only her outerwear was missing, and her clothes and pants were still on.
