Chapter 643: Zongxian and the Zongxian Tree
Chapter 643: Zongxian and the Zongxian Tree
"Why would she think I invited someone else?" Ivan muttered to himself, confused. He turned to Luna, hoping to get the young witch's opinion, but found that she was still standing in the same spot, not following him.
Ivan was about to ask, but Luna's voice came first.
"It must be because you're too tall!"
Too tall? Ivan furrowed his brow, not understanding what Luna was trying to say.
Or was this just another one of Luna's sudden whims?
Just as Ivan was thinking this, Luna suddenly walked over to him, pressed herself against him, and placed her hands on his shoulders. Ivan had never been so close to Luna before and felt a bit uncomfortable.
But before he could think much more, he felt the young witch's hands pushing down on his shoulders. Curious about what Luna was doing, Ivan complied and squatted down, eventually sitting on the ground.
"Much better!" Luna stretched out her hand to compare their heights, seeming quite pleased.
Ivan sat on the ground, looking up at Luna, feeling that this perspective was a bit strange.
"Have you heard of the Zongxian Tree?" Luna suddenly asked.
Ivan shook his head.
"It usually grows very tall and large, and it's very beautiful. Its branches are covered with golden-red leaves. It steals all the sunlight, casting a large shadow, and no other tree can grow nearby."
Luna spoke softly, her ethereal voice echoing in the corridor. She walked to the window, the setting sun casting a beautiful golden-red glow on her pale blonde hair.
Ivan gazed up at Luna, entranced. At that moment, she seemed like the magnificent Zongxian Tree, so radiant that she blocked out the sun, leaving him in her shadow.
"Are you saying that I'm making Hermione feel uncomfortable because I'm doing too well?" Ivan asked hesitantly.
Luna didn't respond, lost in her own world, her hand reaching out as if trying to cup a ray of sunlight.
Ivan didn't disturb her, silently reflecting on her words. He suddenly remembered what Hermione had said a fortnight ago when Harry and Ron had a falling out.
"No, you're wrong. Sometimes I'm jealous of you... I wish you wouldn't be so good at everything."
Ivan had thought Hermione was just joking at the time, but now it seemed there was more to it.
"You're putting too much pressure on her", Luna's ethereal voice echoed again. "She's like a Zongxian, circling around the Zongxian Tree, but she feels insignificant because there are too many Zongxians like her."
"Zongxian? What are they?" Ivan was thoroughly confused.
"They are very interesting house-elves, about the size of a palm, with transparent wings. They emit a faint Lumos and at night, many Zongxians fly out from the flowers, circling around the Zongxian Tree", Luna explained happily.
Ivan scratched his head. He had searched through countless books on magical creatures for a suitable one for blood infusion and had never come across anything called a Zongxian.
This was probably another one of Luna's fantastical creations. She always had so many whimsical ideas, as if she lived in a fairy tale.
Of course, Ivan wasn't foolish enough to argue with Luna about whether Zongxians existed. He understood the metaphor in her words.
“You have so many Zongxian. Even without me, you would still practice Magic with other friends and talk about this with them…” Luna whispered softly.
“No, I wouldn’t!” Ivan countered Luna’s words with great sincerity. “Because there’s only one Luna at Hogwarts, and I can’t find another!”
“Thank you!” Hearing Ivan say this, Luna became very happy, her eyes narrowing. She spoke in a singing, light tone. “Then she must also hope you tell her that there’s only one Hermione at Hogwarts, and she is the most special Zongxian!”
Ivan was taken aback. After a while, his face turned slightly red, and he stammered, “Does it have to be this way? Isn’t it a bit too…”
Ivan didn’t continue, but he certainly understood what Luna meant. Wasn’t this the same as confessing?
Just the thought of it made Ivan feel a bit nervous.
“But girls really care about this!” Luna stared at Ivan, then asked, “Do you like her?”
Ivan hesitated for a moment, but he already knew the answer in his heart.
Of course, he liked Hermione. He had liked her in his previous life, but he wasn’t sure if it was love.
Because he also liked every outstanding character from his original world—he understood their hearts, knew everything about them, and had listened to their stories.
And compared to others, Hermione was too close to him, so close that Ivan couldn’t sort out the mixed emotions.
“If Hermione accepts someone else’s invitation to the Christmas Ball, would you be upset?”
Luna’s ethereal voice reached Ivan’s ears again.
Ivan closed his eyes, imagining such a scene. His expression became very unnatural, but he quickly returned to his calm state.
He slowly opened his eyes, looked at Luna, and his words became more determined. “I think I understand… Thank you, Luna!”
Luna just smiled and didn’t reply.
Once he had figured it out, Ivan’s confusion vanished. However, he didn’t rush off to find Hermione immediately. On one hand, it would be impolite to Luna, and on the other, he needed some time to prepare a surprise.
So, for the rest of the time, he accompanied Luna as they strolled around the castle, chatting about everyday trivia and listening to the whimsical ideas of the young witches.
He enjoyed talking with Luna because he never knew what kind of words would come out of her mouth, making everything seem so novel.
“By the way, are you planning to attend this year’s Christmas Ball?” Ivan asked curiously.
“But who would invite me as a dance partner?” Luna said wistfully.
Ivan then remembered that Luna was a third-year student and couldn’t attend the Ball unless invited.
Generally, younger pretty girls should be quite popular, so it was surprising to Ivan that no one had invited Luna.
But upon closer thought, Ivan understood why.
If Luna were to attend the Ball, she would surely wear a peculiar dress and a beautiful wreath or a hat she had made herself, becoming the “center of attention” at the Ball—though not everyone could handle the odd looks from others.
Thinking this, Ivan’s gaze towards Luna was full of regret. Unfortunately, he had already planned to invite Hermione and couldn’t invite a second person.
“I don’t like dances; they’re too noisy…” Perhaps sensing Ivan’s thoughts, Luna gently shook her head and continued mysteriously, “I don’t plan to go home for Christmas either. I have more important things to do…”
