Chapter 642: I'm Good at Reasoning
Chapter 642: I'm Good at Reasoning
Despite Kyle's haste, they still failed to catch up with Fred and the others before Professor McGonagall did.
By the time they rushed back to the castle, they just saw the door to Professor McGonagall's office close.
After a brief discussion, they decided to wait for them in the corridor.
Due to the Quidditch match, the corridor was quiet and deserted, except for a ghost.
Nearly Headless Nick poked his head out from the corridor floor and drifted up slowly.
"What did those students do?" He asked curiously, looking at Kyle. "I just noticed that Professor McGonagall's hands were shaking. She rarely loses her temper like that."
"Just a minor disagreement among students," Kyle replied.
"Oh?" Said Nearly Headless Nick.
He didn't think a minor disagreement could anger Professor McGonagall so much, but seeing that Kyle didn't want to elaborate, he didn't press further.
It wasn't really necessary, anyway... Ghosts could move freely through the castle, and he could easily go listen for himself.
And with that, Nearly Headless Nick floated off to the neighboring room.
Kyle and the others were once again alone in the corridor.
A minute later, Autumn rushed over.
"How are Fred and George?" She asked anxiously.
"We don't know yet," Cedric replied, pointing to the closed door of Professor McGonagall's office. "They were just taken in there."
"But I bet Professor McGonagall won't let them off easily, especially with so many people and professors watching," Autumn said.
"...I guess a week of detention is inevitable."
"They were too impulsive," Autumn frowned. "Malfoy was obviously goading them because he lost the match, and they fell for it."
"Yeah..." Kyle agreed. "I guess that's what Professor McGonagall is telling them right now."
At that moment, Cedric walked to the window at the end of the corridor and glanced outside.
"Everyone's back," he said.
Loud chatter filled their ears, and the voices grew louder.
"Look at the Slytherins," Cedric suddenly pointed outside. "They look rather pleased with themselves, don't they?"
Kyle walked over to join him.
From this position, he could clearly see Malfoy and Montague standing in the field in front of the castle.
There was someone else with them.
...Dolores Umbridge.
Kyle couldn't hear what they were saying, but he guessed it had something to do with Fred and the others.
Although Malfoy was limping and his face was swollen, there was no anger on his face. On the contrary, he was smiling, as if celebrating the success of some plot.
"They must be plotting something devious!" Autumn exclaimed. "What a despicable bunch."
"Fred and George fell right into their trap," Cedric sighed.
...
Five minutes later, Dolores Umbridge walked by with a cheerful step.
To avoid unnecessary trouble, Kyle and his friends left the corridor from the other end as soon as she reached their floor.
However, instead of returning to the Hufflepuff common room downstairs, they went up to the eighth floor and waited in front of the portrait of the Fat Lady.
But what Kyle didn't expect was that they would end up waiting there for an entire day.
Neither Fred, George, nor Harry returned that day, not even for dinner.
They didn't see them again until the next day.
Early that morning, Kyle and his friends went to the Great Hall and finally spotted a dejected Fred and George.
"What did Professor McGonagall say?" Cedric asked tentatively as he sat down in the empty seat next to them. "Did you get detention? How long?"
"A week," Fred replied, his voice dry.
"That's not so bad," Autumn forced a smile, trying to sound casual. "A week of detention in exchange for beating up Malfoy is actually a pretty good deal, isn't it?"
"If that was all, we'd gladly take a year's detention," George said. "But we've been banned from playing Quidditch."
"What?" Cedric exclaimed in disbelief.
"Yes, that's what Umbridge said," Fred confirmed, his face darkening as he poked at the bread on his plate. "Us and Harry are banned from playing Quidditch again."
"Didn't you talk to Professor McGonagall?" Cedric asked instinctively. "She values Quidditch the most, she wouldn't agree to this."
"Yes, it's over." Fred tried to put on a nonchalant front. "Without a Seeker and Beaters, Gryffindor is destined to finish last in the Quidditch Cup this year."
"It's up to you guys now." George laughed loudly, his voice exaggerated and unlike his usual tone. "Make sure to teach Slytherin a lesson."
As he spoke, his voice turned bitter once more.
"That Malfoy brat... He insulted our parents and Harry's mother with his despicable words, and he got away with it."
"It's unfair!" Fred exclaimed angrily. "We'll make them pay for this someday... Whether it's the Malfoys or that toad, Umbridge."
"Definitely... But don't be impulsive again." Autumn reminded them, "Umbridge has a lot of power now. If she catches you doing something wrong again, you might be expelled."
"Don't worry, we won't get expelled." George said calmly.
Kyle glanced at him and suddenly asked, "Is there any way for you to get back into the game?"
"Yes." Cedric stood up immediately. "I'll go talk to Professor McGonagall. She'll definitely have a solution."
"Don't go." Fred stopped him.
"It's useless." George shook his head. "Umbridge did say what we need to do to lift the ban."
"But we absolutely won't do that." Fred stated firmly.
"Don't be ridiculous, it's a ban!" Cedric pressed. "What do we need to do? Detention? Or apologize to Malfoy?"
"Neither." Fred hesitated for a moment before continuing, "Umbridge said that Lucius Malfoy is very angry, and if we want to play again, we must write to him for forgiveness."
"I bet this was that Malfoy brat's idea." George sneered. "Everyone knows that our families have never gotten along... They wouldn't miss this opportunity."
"And if we write to them, we'll definitely be made a laughingstock."
Fred continued, "Not just us, but our fathers would also be mocked by old Malfoy."
"It would be a permanent stain on the Weasley name..."
"Forget about not being allowed to play, even if it means expulsion, we absolutely won't let that happen."
Fred and George were resolute.
Cedric opened his mouth but ultimately remained silent.
To be honest, if he were in the Weasley brothers' shoes, he wouldn't write that letter to the Malfoys either.
This concerned the Weasley family's reputation, and playing Quidditch didn't seem so important in comparison.
For a moment, the atmosphere at the table was somber.
However, Kyle suddenly spoke up, "It's alright, leave this to me."
"No, Kyle, we absolutely won't bow down to the Malfoys." Fred said, "This is non-negotiable..."
"Let me finish." Kyle waved his hand, "I'm not asking you to apologize, but to reason with him.
Malfoy was in the wrong first in this matter, wasn't he? If we tell Lucius the whole story, I think he'll understand your actions."
"Ha, understand us?" George laughed for the first time, "Don't joke about that, it's impossible."
"The Malfoys are all despicable. How could they let this opportunity go? Even if you write to them, it'll only be a waste of parchment."
Not just them, but Cedric also nodded slightly in agreement.
"Yes, Kyle, let's think of something else." He said, "Instead of writing to the Malfoys, I think it's more appropriate to talk to Professor McGonagall.
"Or we could go directly to Headmaster Dumbledore. He'll definitely have a way to make Umbridge revoke the punishment.
"After all, this is Hogwarts, not the Ministry of Magic."
"It's worth a try. Who knows, it might work." Kyle shrugged and smiled, "Remember what I said before? I'm actually quite good at reasoning with people."
