Chapter 64: Preparing for the Real War
Chapter 64: Preparing for the Real War
After chatting with Kenvi for a while, Liam heard a knock at the door. A Spiderbot stood at the entrance, and Kenvi inserted a perforated steel plate into a slot on the robot. A drawer popped out from the robot, containing a meal box with dinner inside.
How advanced! Liam marveled internally. Even in his previous life, food delivery hadn't reached the point of being handled by robots. Dave truly was a genius; with these technologies, he had found so many new applications.
After dinner and more conversation, Liam and Kenvi wished each other goodnight and retired to their rooms early. Both needed to be well-rested for the upcoming battle the next day.
The master bedroom had been kept ready for Liam. When he entered the room, he noticed a set of Assassin's Garb laid out on the bed, tailored to his size. This must have been Kenvi's thoughtful gesture.
Although Liam felt a bit sorry, considering his age and how quickly he was growing, he could use this as a template and have a set made at Diagon Alley that could grow with him. This outfit was far more suitable for his physical capabilities and much more practical for movement than the Hogwarts uniform.
On top of the outfit was an iron box. Inside, he found a gilded perforated steel plate, similar to the one Kenvi used to retrieve their meal. This must be the ID card Dave had created.
Liam secured the small, palm-sized gilded plate and then practiced a few spells before going to bed. The prospect of participating in a real war had him quite excited, and he tossed and turned for a while before finally drifting off to sleep.
The next morning, Liam got up early, washed up, and put on the Assassin's Garb. As expected, this professionally designed outfit was much more conducive to movement and combat than ordinary clothing.
After breakfast, Liam said goodbye to Jennifer and set out with Kenvi to the designated plaza for the assembly. Upon arriving, Liam saw that the people preparing to set out had already gathered in the plaza. Due to the population issue, the number of participants was around 500, each with a robot for transportation.
What surprised Liam was that the robots had dedicated growth chambers, containing many Plants. It seemed these Plants would serve as their weapons.
At that moment, Dave finished his pre-battle speech and walked over to Liam, saying, "In the past, our offensives were very difficult because the Plants couldn't move. Planting them bit by bit was too slow, and we didn't have enough people. With the passage of time, most vehicles had become unusable, so we couldn't organize any mobile forces, let alone counterattack the Zombies."
Liam asked curiously, "With only 500 people operating 500 robots, it still seems rather thin compared to the thousands of Zombies. Can such a counterattack really succeed?"
"Thanks to the technology you brought", Dave said excitedly. "Actually, there are 5,000 robots outside the town, and everyone is just here to command them. Since we've had the robots, we can cultivate more Plants and give them unparalleled mobility."
No wonder this group of combatants included people of all ages and genders. On one hand, the battle didn't require hand-to-hand combat, so physical fitness wasn't a major concern. On the other hand, the population was insufficient, so they had to mobilize everyone they could.
So, these Plants and robots could spread so quickly because the human population had dwindled to such an extent. Liam felt that the future of human civilization in this world might become a hybrid of Plants and steampunk.
Kenvi set off early with five people and fifty robots, acting as the scout team to clear the path for the main army. Meanwhile, Dave invited Liam to join him aboard one of the robots.
When Liam reached the outskirts of the town, he realized that the doctor and his direct 100 robots were quite different from the regular ones. Each robot stood as tall as a two-story building, much larger than the ones he had seen in the plaza. They all carried a massive iron box on their backs, from which thin streams of white steam escaped. The steam from so many robots created a misty, almost ethereal atmosphere, like a scene from a fairy tale.
Noticing Liam's curious gaze, Dave explained, "Regular robots need to be supplied with high-temperature, high-pressure steam at regular intervals, and they're too small to carry a boiler. So I invented these large robots, which can not only fight against the enemy's mutated giant zombies but also carry the boiler to provide steam for the other robots on the battlefield."
Liam was in awe of Dave, the mad scientist. It was incredible how he could master so many technologies in such a short time and even make improvements.
As they talked, the two climbed aboard one of the large robots and rejoined the main force, setting off toward the designated battlefield.
The objective of this operation was to create as much commotion as possible in the outskirts of Greenville, luring the zombies out of the city and annihilating them in open combat. This would allow them to easily occupy Greenville, secure the necessary supplies and industrial capabilities, and accommodate more people.
There was some good news: during Liam's last visit, the zombie leader of Greenville, along with many elite zombies, had been eliminated during an attack on Dave's town. Now, Greenville was leaderless, with only a few elite zombies barely managing to lead the masses of instinct-driven zombies. This was why Dave had devised a plan to draw the enemy out. With so few elite zombies, the control over the zombie horde was severely limited.
The steel army rolled forward, heading toward the city over thirty kilometers away. As they traveled, Liam, feeling a bit bored, started asking Dave about this world.
From Dave's answers, Liam learned that this world was originally about five to six years more advanced than the one he had known in his previous life. However, a meteorite had fallen, and the research conducted by major corporations on the meteorite had led to a biohazard outbreak. The meteorite also seemed to have altered the world, allowing Dave to cultivate these magical plants.
Compared to Liam's previous world, this one might not have developed nuclear weapons due to different physical laws. For zombies, especially the mutated ones, conventional weapons were clearly insufficient. The biohazard outbreak had been sudden and severe, and humans lacked the manpower to operate conventional weapons effectively.
On the zombie side, only a few elite zombies possessed the intelligence to use weapons, while the rest could only perform simple actions. As a result, conventional warfare had become obsolete, and the war had transformed into a conflict between plants and zombies.
Time passed as they chatted, and suddenly, Liam felt the giant robot come to a stop. They had arrived at the designated battlefield, and the battle was about to begin.
