Chapter 64: Luring the Enemy Deeper
Chapter 64: Luring the Enemy Deeper
Upon seeing this group of people, Rain's heart skipped a beat.
He immediately darted into an alley beside him and watched intently.
These spotted mutts looked quite different from ordinary dogs.
So, Rain immediately associated them with the Jackal Gang as Hamilton had described.
Their large, round ears, irregularly-sized circular spots, a row of narrow mane extending from the back of their heads to their backs, and their protruding jaws and canine teeth suggested formidable biting power, a sight that could instill fear.
As he followed them, Rain increasingly felt something was amiss. Their direction was unmistakably towards his home.
"Could it be that the Jackal Gang has finally realized Blackbeard and Scarface are missing and has come looking for them?"
The spotted jackals stopped at Anna's doorstep, barking furiously, a sight that delighted the burly men.
The bald strongman, along with four or five of his men, surveyed the house and began whispering among themselves.
Although they were quite far, Rain, with his significantly enhanced physical condition, could hear their conversation clearly.
"This should be where Blackbeard was last seen."
"Boss, why don't we just charge in?"
"Are you an idiot? With so many people around, do you want to get caught by the sheriff? We'll wait until nightfall and then..." The bald strongman slapped one of his men's heads.
"You guys go and ask around, whose house is this?"
"Yes, boss!"
The bald strongman's men dispersed and began inquiring with passersby.
"Looks like I guessed right!"
"Good thing I didn't let Anna go back, otherwise, the consequences would be unimaginable!"
Rain's eyes narrowed, and he immediately climbed up to the second floor of his house from the alley.
He was going to fetch his greatsword from his room.
Given the situation, something was definitely about to happen!
Meanwhile, in Rain's courtyard, Anna, seeing a group of fierce men and jackals surrounding her doorstep, paled.
She crouched down, hugging Mint tightly, her lips pressed together, afraid to make a sound.
At that moment, one of the bald strongman's men approached Anna and Mint, asking, "Hey, little girl, do you know whose house this is?"
They had also thought of this, as neighbors were likely to know whose house it was.
He had sharp eyes and immediately spotted Anna and Mint in Rain's courtyard, tending to the vegetables.
This delighted him, as he wouldn't have to ask around.
Facing the Jackal Gang member's question, Anna's body trembled, and she stammered, but couldn't bring herself to answer.
"Are you mute? Speak up!" The gang member's temper flared, and his attitude worsened.
Rain, who had just retrieved the leather-sheathed steel longsword from his room, glanced downstairs and thought, 'Damn!'
"How did they identify Anna's house so quickly?"
Rain had intended to wait for them to leave and then secretly follow and eliminate them.
But he hadn't expected someone to spot Anna so quickly.
Without much hesitation, Rain decided to take the initiative.
He quietly descended from the second floor, walked out of the alley, and approached Anna's doorstep.
Just as he neared, he pretended to notice the bald strongman's group, looking hesitant and afraid to approach.
Rain's furtive behavior immediately caught the attention of the bald strongman's gang, and a burly man stepped forward suspiciously, "Hey, kid, is this your house?"
"No, no, how could this be my house!" Rain pretended to be frightened and waved his hands in denial.
As he spoke, the man quickly retreated backward.
This made the bald strongman even more suspicious of Rain.
Suddenly, Rain spun around and sprinted into the woods on the other side!
The bald strongman, seeing Rain's panicked expression, burst into a radiant smile and turned to shout at his men, "We've found the main target! This kid is definitely up to something! Catch him, and release the dogs!"
"Thinking they can escape our Jackal Gang's tracking, how naive!" a few gang members mocked, loosening their grip on the ropes.
Four or five spotted jackals, like unleashed wild horses, followed Rain, barking furiously as they pursued him.
One of the gang members, who had been planning to teach Anna a lesson, glared at her angrily upon finding the 'main target', then rushed back to the bald strongman.
The bald man and his group, laughing gleefully, trailed behind the pack of jackals, slowly pursuing them into the woods.
Each of them wore a confident expression, certain that Rain wouldn't escape.
Anna and Mint, on the other hand, watched the scene with a mix of astonishment and panic.
Suddenly, Anna realized something, and couldn't help but stomp her feet in anxiety, her knuckles turning white as she clenched her sleeves.
Although she didn't know what was going on with Rain, who had been acting strangely lately and had even rescued her from two thugs, she still felt that Rain might not be able to withstand the attack of so many people and dogs.
At this moment, Anna felt utterly useless!
Rain had helped her again, but facing his peril, she had no idea what she could do to assist him.
"Sister Anna, don't be afraid. I believe my brother will drive away these bad guys," Mint said, her innocent eyes wide with confidence.
Mint's words seemed to hold a mysterious faith in her brother.
Perhaps every little sister fantasizes about having a brother to protect her!
But when Mint expressed such confidence, Anna's initial tension subsided.
Yes, Rain had appeared like a miracle before, slaying two burly bandits and saving her.
Who could have predicted that?
This time, Rain should be able to create another miracle!
However, Anna continued to ponder what she could do to help.
Then it hit her! She remembered!
The new sheriff in town seemed to have a good relationship with Rain.
"Mint, go inside by yourself. Sister will go find the sheriff," Anna said gently, holding Mint's hands.
"Okay! Sister Anna, go! I'll lock the door!"
"Good girl!"
Anna lightly patted Mint's head and immediately stood up, lifting the hem of her long skirt and rushing towards the town's administration hall.
In the woods.
Rain sprinted ahead, and when he felt it was sufficiently secluded, he gradually slowed down.
The five spotted jackals were the quickest, catching up to Rain as soon as he stopped and immediately surrounding him, barking ferociously.
Rain, leaning against a tree, brandished the leather-sheathed longsword in his hands, making a loud whistling sound that frightened the jackals, preventing them from attacking immediately.
"Why haven't the Jackal Gang's members caught up yet?"
"Why are they so slow?" Rain muttered.
The spotted jackals before him could be killed in just a few seconds if Rain chose to do so.
But doing so might alert the Jackal Gang's members, causing them to scatter and escape.
Therefore, to capture them all at once, he had to pretend to be surrounded by the dogs, waiting for the enemies to take the bait!
