Chapter 64: Generous Rewards
Chapter 64: Generous Rewards
"Looks like S.H.I.E.L.D. still has their greedy eyes on me. Good thing I didn't turn off the brain booster, or I would have been caught!"
Just as he was leaving 121st Street, he felt a sense of being watched. To be safe, he sped up and immediately turned around. Sure enough, he saw a Drone not far away that couldn't hide in time.
He quickly cast a few Shadowblade Curses, slicing it to scrap metal.
Putting away his Wand, Jerry didn't stay in the air. Instead, he rode his flying broom into the alley below.
Next, he planned to continue through the alleys. It would be slower, but much safer.
After flying through twists and turns for about ten minutes, he finally returned to the alley where Miss Berry had parked her car.
He put the flying broom, Tranquilizer Sniper Rifle, and wizard robes back into the guitar case, then calmly walked out of the alley.
He opened the trunk, placed the guitar case back in its original spot, used an Alohomora spell to unlock the car door, and sat back in his seat. With a wave of his Wand, he cast:
"Reparo!"
Everything was back to how it was before.
"What happened to me?"
Miss Berry slowly opened her eyes, looking confused. Why did she feel like she had been sleeping?
"Miss, you must have been too worried about your father, and fainted from the stress", Jerry explained with a serious expression.
"Is that so?"
Miss Berry was taken aback for a moment but then quickly remembered something and got out of the car to look toward Graybourne Academy.
However, the sounds of artillery fire had stopped.
"Miss, if you're really worried, you can call your father!"
Jerry rolled down the window and suggested to Miss Berry.
Miss Berry, coming to her senses, quickly took out her phone and made a call.
After a brief conversation, Miss Berry let out a sigh of relief and got back into the car.
"It's fine. Your father said he's okay. He's on his way to the hospital with the injured, so he might be a bit late getting home."
"That's good!"
Jerry, who already knew the situation, smiled and nodded.
"Hey, is Elsa asleep too?"
Miss Berry hadn't heard Elsa's voice and turned to look at the back seat.
"Yeah, she must be tired from all the fun at the amusement park today."
Jerry hadn't lifted the Sleeping Charm on Elsa, so she was still sound asleep in the back.
"Then let's head back!"
Jerry placed Elsa's head on his lap to make her more comfortable, then quietly opened his Strange Panel.
After such a tough fight and rescuing so many civilians and soldiers, the number of Little Red Stars should be substantial.
"Fifty thousand!"
Even though he expected it to be a lot, he almost shouted out loud when he saw the number of Little Red Stars on the Panel.
He had worked hard for a whole month, patrolling every night on his flying broom, doing good deeds and fighting crime, and had only accumulated twenty thousand Little Red Stars.
But in just one night, he had earned thirty thousand, and he wasn't even the main force. This was indeed surprising.
It seemed that participating in more dangerous large-scale events was the way to earn more Little Red Stars from the Panel.
Actually, Jerry still didn't fully understand the Little Red Stars reward system of the Panel.
At first, he thought it might be something like karma or merit.
But doing bad things didn't affect it, and even creating and then solving disasters didn't change anything. It didn't fit his understanding of karma or merit.
Moreover, he noticed a peculiar feature about how he obtained Little Red Stars.
Although doing good deeds earns you Little Red Stars, it's not entirely that simple.
For example, if he helps an old lady cross the road, he gets Little Red Stars. If he helps her take out the trash, he also gets Little Red Stars.
However, if he gives her money, he doesn't get any Little Red Stars. Similarly, if he gives money to a beggar on the street, he doesn't receive any Little Red Stars either.
Moreover, sometimes the same action can earn different amounts of Little Red Stars.
For instance, in the same robbery scenario, a robber with a small knife versus a robber with a handgun, or a skinny robber versus a tall and muscular one, the number of Little Red Stars he earns for resolving the situation varies.
It's all quite perplexing!
It seems that he must personally participate, and the stronger and more dangerous the enemy, and the more people he saves, the more Little Red Stars he will earn.
At eight in the morning,
Miss Berry, wearing a loose white men's tank top, yawned as she emerged from her room.
Since Hass mentioned during their call yesterday that he might be busy all night, Miss Berry stayed after dropping Jerry and Elsa off at home.
Today, she decided to wake up early to cook some oatmeal porridge for the kids, bake some bread, and fry some eggs.
If she were to become their mother, she couldn't indulge in lazy mornings like she used to when living alone.
However, as soon as she reached the living room, she froze:
"Jerry, you're up so early?"
"Good morning, Miss Berry! I'm an early riser. By the way, I've already prepared breakfast. It's a bit Chinese-style, I hope you like it!"
Jerry, sitting on the sofa, closed his spellbook and smiled at the stunned Miss Berry.
"It's fine, it's fine!"
Miss Berry glanced at the table full of breakfast and pointed vaguely towards the bathroom:
"Um, I'll go freshen up!"
"Sure!"
Jerry nodded.
"Ah—"
Suddenly, a cry of surprise came from the bathroom.
"What's wrong?"
Jerry rushed over.
Miss Berry, standing by the laundry basket next to the washing machine, muttered helplessly:
"Where are the clothes I changed into yesterday?"
"Oh, I washed them this morning. They're drying on the balcony now. You can wear Dad's clothes for now; they should be dry in a couple of hours!"
Jerry remembered that when he used Household Magic this morning, the clothes Miss Berry and the kids had changed into yesterday had automatically cleaned themselves and hung themselves on the balcony.
"This—"
Miss Berry looked at Jerry, now extremely doubtful about whether she would be the one taking care of the kids or if she would be the one being taken care of in this household.
"Alright, Miss Berry, you need to hurry up. The breakfast will get cold if you take too long!"
Jerry reminded her and then returned to the living room to continue reading.
In fact, Jerry had already noticed that Miss Berry didn't seem to be very skilled at cooking or housework. He doubted she would take over these tasks in the future.
It's not that Miss Berry was unwilling, but if she wasn't very good at it, Jerry felt it was better for him to handle it.
After all, he wasn't used to having oatmeal porridge and toast for breakfast.
Besides, now that he had mastered Household Magic, it didn't take much time at all. A few waves of his wand, and it was done.
"It looks like I'll have to take care of one more person in this house. Maybe this is what 'with great power comes great responsibility' really means!"
In a household, the person who can do the most ends up doing the most work.
