Chapter 639: Long-Distance Support
Chapter 639: Long-Distance Support
On the arid land, not even a single insect could be seen flying by.
Only a single, newly constructed flat dirt road stretched from north to east, cutting across the vast expanse.
As the sun hung high in the sky, its scorching rays seared the earth.
A swift shadow darted across the ground, like a low-flying bird.
Lin Sai was rushing eastward on his own.
The rushing air created a sharp whistling sound in his ears, and any nearby reference points were left behind in the blink of an eye, only to disappear from his field of view.
As he raced forward at such a pace, Lin Sai's breathing remained steady, and he could even effortlessly switch between game modules.
He allocated the appropriate amount of essence to the Movement Module, and with the physical recovery provided by the Ancient Mark when stepping on the ground, he could increase his speed at almost no cost.
At this point, he opened the map again.
"..."
"My speed is indeed much faster than theirs," Lin Sai nodded slightly.
On the map, he was heading east from the north, while the people from the Green Swamp were heading east from the south.
Both parties were traveling towards the same destination from opposite ends of the world, as if two trajectories were converging on the map.
Lin Sai was an Awakener.
At the same time, the people from the Green Swamp also possessed extraordinary physical abilities.
Both parties were lightly equipped and moved at incredible speeds.
However, Lin Sai had the advantage of the road constructed by the workers, which further increased his mobility, not to mention his own extraordinary strength beyond the norm.
After a quick calculation, Lin Sai was certain that he would arrive at the Forest City about a week earlier.
Then, he would spend another day rushing towards the Insect Nest.
Even if there were delays along the way, he would still have at least five days to set up defenses.
Now, the focus was on how to deal with the attackers from the Green Swamp after returning.
"When dealing with these Awakeners, the battle will undoubtedly rely primarily on my personal strength."
"As for help from others..."
"Hilbert? Impossible! That's... the hunters from the Dunes..."
In early June, a crack opened in the fungus-covered ground in the Insect Canyon.
Under the control of the Mourners, three hideous yet bloated bugs emerged one by one from the caves within the canyon.
On their backs, they carried a week's worth of food and began their journey southward.
Mountains surrounded them in the distance.
However, thanks to a gold mine tunnel that Lin Sai had opened up, the bugs could bypass a significant portion of the bumpy road. They only started to navigate the rugged mountain roads after exiting the gold mine, continuing their journey south.
On the second night, the bugs carrying food reached a mountain pass. They helped each other unload their cargo with their mouthparts and then turned back the way they came.
"..."
"Boss, new supplies have arrived."
Soon after the bugs left, a voice could be heard nearby.
A hunter emerged from the mountain pass.
He picked up the food with one hand and slung it over his back, then began climbing the cliff to the south.
Upon reaching the top, he took a few steps and saw the Dunes sitting on a withered tree.
The hunter asked, "Should I distribute it to everyone like last time?"
The Dunes nodded slightly, his gaze still fixed on the distant horizon.
"Follow the old routine and deliver it to everyone," he said.
"By the way, you've been here with me for over a month. Don't you think it's time to take a break and rest at the nest?"
The hunter, who had just set aside a portion of the food for the Dunes and was preparing to leave with the rest, couldn't help but show a chillingly awkward smile.
"Rest..."
"I'd rather sleep here than go back to that place."
The hunters have been guarding the south for months now, establishing close communication with the Insect Nest. Despite knowing they are allies, an innate human fear arises when stepping onto the resilient flesh-like fungal mat and facing the hideous bugs. Instead of resting in the well-equipped Insect Nest, the hunters prefer to camp in the wilderness during their shifts in the dunes, finding comfort in the company of their peers.
"Go ahead, do as you please."
The subordinate takes his leave.
After a while, Shaqiu jumps down from a withered tree branch. He picks up some food, intending to return to his tree. In the distant south, animals rarely venture between the mountains. He activates his hunting skills to track down prey.
"Heh..."
Shaqiu chuckles, recalling that in the past, he would have seized any opportunity to hunt. But now, he unwraps his food parcel.
The Mourners understand human needs, so they provide food produced within the Insect Nest and exchange supplies in the Forest Capital to ensure the humans' comfort.
"This kind of life..."
"Thank you, Lord Lindsay."
Shaqiu expresses his gratitude while packing his food into the parcel. Just then, his hunting skills activate, and he hears a sound from the nearby mountains.
Whoosh!
The rushing wind grows louder. Shaqiu hangs his parcel on a tree branch and grabs his weapon. He turns and sees a figure leaping from below the cliff, almost ignoring the steep terrain. With a few climbs and jumps, the figure reaches the top.
The hunter, who had just drawn his longbow, relaxes and asks excitedly, "Lord Lindsay, what brings you here?"
Lindsay has come to the southern mountains and visited the Forest Capital, where he added some architectural frameworks and installed an automated tool. Now, he arrives at the hunters' position.
Checking the map, Lindsay informs Shaqiu that the raiders from the Green Swamp are still three to four days away.
Lindsay approaches Shaqiu and says, "I came here because there's an urgent matter."
Shaqiu's expression turns solemn, thinking of the other direction. "Do we need to reinforce the front lines?"
Lindsay shakes his head slightly and points south, where the hunters are stationed. "The campaign against the Deviators is going well. The issue lies in the direction you're facing."
Shaqiu gazes at the distant sky. As the last rays of sunlight retreat below the western horizon at nightfall, the restless land and mountains seem to whisper secrets.
In an instant, Shaqiu understands, "Here... the people from the Green Swamp have arrived!"
Lindsay nods and takes items from his bag, handing them to Shaqiu while assigning tasks. "Go and gather the hunters around."
"Hide and place these explosives at the designated spots I've marked."
"Tonight, the Insect Nest's reinforcements will arrive."
"There are seven enemies in total. I can handle three at once, but the rest will be up to you to keep them busy."
"So, your role in this battle is crucial!"
