Chapter 638: Get Out of My Head Right Now!
Chapter 638: Get Out of My Head Right Now!
Seeing that Crouch was willing to back down, Ivan let out a sigh of relief and then used his wand to force Crouch to move away from the fireplace.
However, Crouch showed no intention of moving. Despite not being able to see the invisible Ivan, he guessed Ivan's identity from the sound of his voice and his tone immediately hardened.
"Hals, I don't know why you would follow Alastor into my office, but I hope you understand that attacking a high-ranking Ministry of Magic employee is a serious offense, enough to land you in Azkaban for a while! If you change your mind now, it might still be in time..."
"Whoever should be in Azkaban isn't us... Barty!" Mad-Eye Moody sneered, "I now accuse you of tampering with the tournament rules, casting a Confundus Charm on the Triwizard Cup, and attempting to murder Harry Potter!"
"I attempted to murder Harry Potter?" Barty Crouch Jr. laughed bitterly at Mad-Eye Moody's words, "What reason would I have to do that?"
"Furthermore, do you have a search warrant and arrest warrant from the Ministry of Magic? Who gave you the right to investigate me, the Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation?" Barty Crouch Jr. said fiercely.
Mad-Eye Moody ignored Barty Crouch Jr.'s words and pointed his wand at Crouch, emphasizing, "I believe that letter is evidence! Give it to me, now!"
Barty Crouch Jr. remained silent, only looking at Mad-Eye Moody coldly.
The latter grew increasingly impatient and stepped forward, ready to take the letter himself.
At that moment, Barty Crouch Jr. suddenly spoke up.
"I can show you the letter... There's nothing incriminating in it!"
As he spoke, Barty Crouch Jr. handed over the envelope he was holding and continued angrily, "I hope you don't regret this!"
"I won't!" Mad-Eye Moody snarled, grabbing the letter and shaking it to read its contents.
"What does it say?" Ivan asked urgently, wanting to take a look himself but wary of Crouch taking advantage of their distraction.
Mad-Eye Moody didn't immediately answer Ivan. Instead, he looked at Crouch suspiciously and demanded, "What have you been searching for these past few months? Or rather... who?"
"That's my private business, and I have no obligation to answer you!" Crouch showed no signs of being a prisoner, his attitude remaining defiant. He glared at Mad-Eye Moody and said, "Have you finished reading it? The letter is as ordinary as can be!"
"Not necessarily, and I advise you to be honest, Barty!" Mad-Eye Moody grabbed Crouch's robe and growled, "I don't believe you would spend so much time on something trivial.
I asked Ludo Bagman, and he said you've been missing for months, leaving the Triwizard Cup affairs to him. My contacts in the Department of International Magical Cooperation have never seen you at the Ministry of Magic... Additionally, I just checked the files on your desk, and you haven't touched them!"
"Only something very important and urgent could make you abandon all these responsibilities. I suspect you had to keep it very secret, didn't you?"
Mad-Eye Moody's words were sharp, and his large magical eye was fixed on Crouch's facial expressions.
Ivan, standing nearby, was also watching Crouch, but to his disappointment, no matter what Mad-Eye Moody said, Crouch's expression remained unnaturally calm, showing no change whatsoever.
However, upon further thought, Ivan found it quite normal. Crouch was the former Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, having risen through the ranks from an Auror. Ordinary interrogation methods would be of no use against him.
"Are you done yet, Alastor? These are my private affairs and have nothing to do with Potter!" Barty Crouch Jr. broke free from Mad-Eye Moody's grip and glared at the two men. "I want to see Dumbledore and ask him how he manages his staff and students!"
Mad-Eye Moody clenched the letter in his hand, his weathered face twitching, unsure of how to proceed.
"Can I see that letter?" Ivan suddenly asked.
Mad-Eye Moody turned his head, hesitated for a moment, then threw the letter to Ivan without a word.
Ivan caught it, opened the envelope, and glanced through the contents. The letter was vague—its sender seemed to be requesting that Barty Crouch Jr. give them more time, as finding clues based on a single photograph across all of Britain would be extremely difficult.
Ivan had to admit that Crouch was very cautious; the letter contained little useful information. However, thinking back to Crouch's strange behavior, his suspicions resurfaced.
"Have you thought of something, Hals?" Mad-Eye Moody noticed the change in Ivan's expression and asked.
"You can show that note to Mr. Crouch", Ivan said casually, then picked up the Daily Prophet to give it a final read.
Mad-Eye Moody was annoyed by Ivan's evasiveness, pursing his lips as he pulled the slightly charred parchment from his robes and turned it over.
"Recognize this handwriting?" Mad-Eye Moody demanded.
Crouch was initially confused by the two men's actions, but as he saw the scrawled handwriting, his heart was engulfed in turmoil.
He tried to suppress his emotions to avoid revealing anything to Mad-Eye Moody.
But the next moment, he failed.
"You recognize this handwriting, don't you? It's from someone you know very well..." Ivan threw the letter and the Daily Prophet on the table, his eyes locked on Crouch's, speaking with certainty.
"No, you're mistaken. I don't recognize it at all..." Crouch shook his head, his expression strained.
"You're lying!" Ivan cut him off. Under the influence of Legilimency, Crouch's emotional fluctuations were as obvious as candles in the dark.
Ivan took a step closer, and Crouch's fear grew incrementally. He avoided Ivan's gaze, but the words still pierced his ears, each one digging deeper into his hidden secrets.
"He's gone, isn't he?"
"You've been searching for him these past few months, frantically looking for him! You're worried something might have happened to him, or that he might cause trouble. You're even more worried that someone else might catch him, ruining your career!"
"After all... he's your son!"
Ivan couldn't finish the last few words because Crouch's emotions had completely shattered. Ignoring the wand pressed against his neck, he grabbed Ivan by the collar and lifted him up.
"Get out of my head, now!"
"Let him go, Barty!" Mad-Eye Moody immediately rushed forward, pulling Crouch's hand away and kicking him to the ground.
