Chapter 635: Snape's Secret
Chapter 635: Snape's Secret
Filch was assigned all the tedious tasks by Umbridge, perhaps not only because she found them tedious but also due to her genuine lack of time.
As Kyle and Conna descended the stone steps into the Potions classroom, they were surprised to find Umbridge sitting in a dark corner at the back, holding that familiar blackboard.
The other students noticed her too, and a murmur spread through the room.
"That's strange, why is she here again...?"
"Is the professor's investigation going to be conducted twice?"
"That's unlikely, other classes only had one investigation..."
"Maybe Professor Snape is different. You know, he's not very likable."
"Nonsense, Professor Snape is the best!" The last speaker was clearly a Slytherin.
Regardless, everyone was curious as to why Umbridge had come to investigate Professor Snape again, barely two days after her previous visit.
Umbridge herself was equally puzzled, listening to the students' whispers and glancing at her blackboard, looking bewildered.
Why did everyone say she had been here before, yet there was no record of the investigation results on her blackboard?
"Silence!"
At that moment, the classroom door was abruptly pushed open.
The entire room fell silent.
Snape entered, glancing at the corner, his expression turning grim.
Kyle noticed their mutual glances, and he couldn't help but chuckle.
Snape, sensing the movement, immediately turned and glared at him.
Kyle quickly closed his mouth, but his shoulders still twitched, clearly struggling to contain his laughter.
Conna looked at him curiously. "What are you laughing at?"
"It's hilarious," Kyle whispered. "Professor Snape seems to have outsmarted himself."
He was well aware that Umbridge's investigation of the other professors required only one visit, and there was no need for her to attend two classes.
Her reappearance in the Potions classroom could only mean one thing—she had forgotten she had been there before.
In other words, Snape had used a Forgetfulness Charm on her, causing her to forget certain things, including the results of her investigation into Snape.
To be fair, the Forgetfulness Charm didn't seem very effective. Umbridge had forgotten so much that she didn't even remember attending the class, and here she was, attending it again.
This was not the intended effect of the charm.
Kyle thought that if it were him, he would have made Umbridge forget only the necessary things, like the questions she asked after class.
That would have been a more effective solution.
, Kyle was curious about what Umbridge had said that prompted Snape to use the Forgetfulness Charm on her.
Just as Kyle was about to share his thoughts with Conna, he looked up and met Snape's icy gaze.
Snape's eyes were cold and devoid of emotion, as if he was about to kill someone.
Kyle, sensing the situation, wisely closed his mouth and said nothing.
Snape's expression softened slightly.
"Today, we're learning about the Elixir of Euphoria..." He composed himself, as if nothing had happened. "This is a potion that requires great patience to brew successfully, as you must constantly observe the color changes in the cauldron. Only then can you complete the next step at the right time..."
"The method is..." He waved his wand, and the instructions appeared on the blackboard. "As you can see."
The students immediately put Umbridge out of their minds and got to work.
"Mandrake root... Unicorn hair... Peppermint..."
Kyle checked his ingredients and began grinding the mandrake root.
For the first half-hour, Umbridge remained unusually quiet, but Kyle knew she was about to make her move.
As she did last time, Umbridge stood up exactly half an hour after the start of class and walked between the two rows of desks towards Snape.
She glanced at the cauldrons on both sides of the classroom.
"This class seems to be full of outstanding students," Umbridge said. "Euphoria Elixir is a wonderful potion that brings us happiness, and we need a little happiness in our lives."
"But this happiness is false," Snape said slowly. "And if taken in excess, it can have side effects..."
"I don't think that's a problem," Umbridge said cheerfully. "Just drink a little less, and if Euphoria Elixir is really that dangerous, the Ministry of Magic wouldn't have approved it for the curriculum, right?"
Snape let out a cold laugh.
"So, you've been at Hogwarts..."
"I've been teaching here for fourteen years," Snape interrupted before she could finish her sentence.
Umbridge was taken aback but only made a few quick marks on the blackboard.
Kyle, on the other hand, was crushing Mandrake Root petals with the back of his knife while observing the situation.
This work is organized and uploaded by 69 Books.
As Umbridge put down the blackboard, he muttered under his breath:
"Did you apply to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts first?"
The next second, Umbridge asked the same question, not changing a single word.
As expected...
This further confirmed Kyle's guess that Snape had cast the Forgetfulness Charm on Umbridge.
However, at this moment, the brewing of Euphoria Elixir had reached its most critical stage, and everyone's attention was on the potion in the cauldrons, except for Kyle, who noticed something different.
The same question was asked again, which made Snape extremely annoyed, but he had no choice but to cooperate with Umbridge and answer the questions that seemed meaningless to him.
The events that followed remained unchanged.
After questioning Snape, Umbridge started walking around the classroom, pretending to inspect each student's potion.
The reason it was just a pretense was that Umbridge knew nothing about brewing Euphoria Elixir. She even praised a student whose cauldron contained pink potion.
The real Euphoria Elixir should be blue before adding Unicorn Hair.
The pink color was due to the incorrect order of adding the ingredients; the dried Mandrake Root petals were added first instead of their juice.
A burst of laughter spread around the classroom, and the student who had brewed the wrong potion turned red, keeping his head down without saying a word. Even Professor Snape at the front slightly curled his lips, seemingly mocking Umbridge's ignorance.
Only Umbridge, with her eyes wide open, was unaware of what others were laughing about.
Until the end of class, everyone poured their completed Euphoria Elixir into bottles.
Almost everyone's potion was a light golden color, except for the one Umbridge had praised, which was different. Umbridge then realized she had praised the wrong student.
However, she pretended nothing had happened and approached Professor Snape again.
Kyle's eyes lit up.
Last time, Professor Snape had probably cast the Forgetfulness Charm during their private conversation... This time, she would likely say the same thing.
Kyle intentionally stayed at the back, loosening his grip and dropping a few pieces of parchment onto the floor, trying to delay his exit from the classroom.
He had done the same during the Transfiguration class before.
But this time, before he could pick them up, Professor Snape suddenly waved his wand.
The pieces of parchment on the floor, including Kyle's, were blown out of the classroom by a gust of wind.
Then...
Slam! The classroom door was shut tightly.
