Chapter 63: Work, Work, and More Work
Chapter 63: Work, Work, and More Work
Mira casually found an excuse to shoo away the rowdy crowd of Laki and the others.
In a low voice, she asked Rod, “If you’re going to treat everyone, how are you going to pay the rent?”
She hadn’t forgotten why Rod had wanted to take on a mission in the first place.
Rod grimaced. “I’ll take on another mission in the next couple of days… Can you help me keep an eye out? I’ll also ask around to see if anyone wants to team up.”
Mira smiled. “Sure thing~”
Rod was always moving forward, so the Guild Master didn’t need to worry too much.
It was still early, and the guild wasn’t closing anytime soon. Rod went to the backyard to lift some weights and practice his boxing. He hadn’t had a good workout in the past couple of days, and it felt strange not to stretch his muscles.
After a good session, he stopped, took a shower in the guild’s bathroom, and returned to the tavern to chat with Marcus and the others.
With plenty of hands around, Rod only needed to lend a hand occasionally.
With Rod there, the conversation naturally turned to his and Mira’s outing.
However, Rod’s main goal was to remind everyone to be more cautious when they went out on missions, so he tried to steer the conversation back to the Phantom event.
“The Phantom guys actually did something like that!” Alzack was angry, but then a bit envious.
“But protecting the person you want to protect perfectly during a mission, that’s pretty cool, right?”
He wanted to invite Bisca to team up and protect her properly. If he did that, then…
Rod looked at Alzack’s expression and silently reflected on whether he had ever looked that dazed.
“Those Phantom guys are really annoying,” Nab condemned, then added, “But this kind of thing is probably a rare occurrence. The chances of mages from different guilds meeting are pretty low.”
Rod glanced at Nab and carefully said, “Nab, it’s hard for me to believe that coming from you.”
Nab was taken aback. “Huh?”
Marcus laughed. “Yeah, Nab. You should at least complete a couple of missions before you make such a statement!”
“Rod, this is for you.” Laxus suddenly handed Rod a piece of paper.
Rod took it and saw a drawing of him and Mira leaving the guild together.
The scene showed them walking away, with Mira smiling and waving at the guild behind them. Everyone in the tavern was chattering and laughing, with Laki and a few others covering their mouths to hide their giggles. Some people looked on in surprise or admiration as Rod and Mira left.
Rod and Mira were just stepping out of the guild, turning to look at each other and chatting.
Their smiles were as bright as the morning sun.
Laxus said, “I drew this because I thought the scene was beautiful. Consider it a memento of your first mission.”
“Laxus, this is amazing!” Rod was genuinely surprised. “I’ll keep it safe!”
Laxus was delighted. Rod’s reaction was the best compliment he could have received.
Nab was still arguing with Marcus that he wasn’t avoiding missions, just looking for something only he could do.
But seeing such a beautiful drawing, he immediately stopped his argument.
“Laxus, I go in and out of the guild every day. Why don’t I have a drawing?”
Laxus adjusted his hat and calmly replied, “If you decide to go on a mission, I’ll draw as many as you want.”
Nab jumped up. “You’re underestimating me! I’m going to check the job board right now!”
Rod couldn’t help but warn, “Don’t be too hasty. Think it over before you choose!”
Laxus said, “Don’t worry, I bet Nab will be back in ten minutes.”
Marcus chuckled. “No, there are quite a few jobs on the board today. I’d say twenty minutes.”
Fairy Tail’s famous scene: Nab checking the job board.
A Scene That Doesn't Exist in Fairy Tail: Nab Goes to Work
"..." Rod still can't figure out what psychological issues Nab has. He's not exactly weak, either.
Nab's Spirit Magic: Bear Spirit can grant him the strength of a bear. One punch from him, and it packs a serious punch.
Rod would need to summon a few more monsters to beat him.
Although it's only been less than two days, everything feels more familiar after a trip away.
Not just at the guild, but at home too.
The familiar table and chairs, the familiar bed, the familiar punching bag...
Seeing the punching bag, Rod threw a few punches.
He couldn't afford to slack off on his training and meditation, nor on exploring Summoner's Rift.
At the rate he's going, he should be able to summon either a Red or Blue monster soon, and the Dragon shouldn't be far behind.
...
The next morning, Rod went to the guild as usual.
After finishing a bunch of trivial tasks, he went to check the job board.
The highest-paying jobs usually involve hunting down massive monsters or capturing dangerous criminals, with rewards often reaching into the millions.
However, these jobs are almost at the S-rank level. Even if Rod dared to take them, Mira would likely reject him.
The lower-paying jobs are more varied, mostly tasks within Magnolia and nearby towns.
Things like irrigating fields, gathering rare herbs, capturing perverts, and finding lost items...
From tasks that affect the livelihood of an entire village to helping teenagers with their adolescent troubles.
Rod went through them one by one, but either they weren't in his area of expertise, or the rewards weren't worth the effort.
It wasn't just him; many others had the same trouble finding suitable tasks.
As he was engrossed in the job board, a hand with a ring reached out and tore off a "Capture Pervert" mission.
Rod turned his head and saw a handsome guy: "Loki?"
"Um? You... hello?" Before he could finish his greeting, Loki had already backed up five meters.
Rod wasn't happy; being treated like a dirty object was not a pleasant experience.
"Look, you should know by now that my magic is different from Celestial Spirit Magic."
"Um, ah, sorry, it's just a habit," Loki said, holding the mission paper and walking stiffly toward the counter.
"Do you want to team up? I have a summon that's good at searching..."
Swish—Loki seemed to have hit fast-forward, appearing in front of Mira in an instant: "Solo mission, capture the suspicious person harassing the client."
Mira looked at the mission paper and nodded, and Loki was already out of the guild like a gust of wind.
Rod: "..."
Well, old grudges aren't that easy to shake off, even if he doesn't know what the grudge is about.
Rod decided to practice his magic in the backyard and wait to see if any new missions came in today.
Oh, he should let Worm go to the kitchen to mooch some food first.
...
In the afternoon, the guild was still bustling.
Natsu had just finished a special flame feast and was leaning back in his chair, satisfied.
Gray wasn't around today, which felt strange. He wanted to punch him in the face.
Happy had also eaten two grilled fish and was lying on the table with a round, full belly: "Natsu, we don't have much money left."
"Huh?" Natsu opened his wallet and dumped its contents onto the table. A few coins clinked, and two light paper bills fell out.
Together, it was less than 10,000 J, enough for him and Happy for maybe two or three days.
"No choice, we have to work!" Natsu stood up, his right fist slamming into his left palm. "We need to find a job that lets us fight to our heart's content!"
Happy raised his cat paw: "Aye!"
