Chapter 63: The Wei Family's Chief Steward
Chapter 63: The Wei Family's Chief Steward
"The Wei family is one of the most prominent clans in the provincial capital, but their influence extends far beyond that of a mere county clan." Ma Gu continued, "In fact, the Wei family's power stretches across the entire province, and rumor has it that they even have connections that reach the royal capital."
"Young Master Lu, how could I not be afraid of such a powerful and influential family?" Ma Gu's tone carried a hint of fear as he spoke.
Hearing Ma Gu's explanation, Lu Qing finally understood why he held the Wei family in such high regard and trepidation.
However, he still had some doubts. "If the Wei family is so formidable, why are they content to remain in a small county seat?"
Ma Gu shook his head. "I'm not sure about that, but perhaps it's because our humble Cang County is where the Wei family first rose to prominence."
"Moreover, as far as I know, most of the Wei family's businesses and influence have already shifted to the provincial capital and the royal capital. Only a small portion of their less important enterprises remain here in the county seat, along with their ancestral mansion."
"However, it's strange that the head of the Wei family continues to reside in the ancestral mansion. I wonder why that is."
"Of course, even though the Wei family has moved a large part of their business elsewhere, their status in the county seat remains unchallenged by any other family."
It seemed that the Wei family had their secrets. Lu Qing's eyes narrowed in thought. Otherwise, it was hard to explain such peculiar behavior. Why would the head of such a powerful family choose to remain in a small county seat instead of relocating to the more prosperous provincial or royal capital?
However, whatever their secrets were, they were beyond Lu Qing's ability to uncover at his current station. Thus, he set the matter aside for the time being.
Hearing about the immense power of the Wei family did bring him some relief, though. With the Wei family's resources, they surely wouldn't lack precious medicinal ingredients. As long as the two guards sent by the Wei family returned quickly, and Wei Xiaogongzi could make it through the night, his life should be able to be saved.
In fact, the two guards sent by the Wei family arrived much faster than Lu Qing had anticipated.
Due to the severity of the young master's condition, they dared not waste any time, and one of them immediately requested Master Chen's assistance in preparing the medicine.
That night, Lu Qing stayed at the mountain courtyard instead of returning home. He sat in a chair, holding Xiao Yan, who was dozing off, while Xiao Jiao slept soundly in his arms.
Suddenly, a commotion outside startled him awake. Seeing that Xiao Yan was still asleep, he carefully carried her into Master Chen's room to let her sleep peacefully before stepping outside.
The courtyard was now brightly lit, and several people had gathered. On either side of the courtyard stood over a dozen burly men, holding lanterns that illuminated the area.
Lu Qing spotted Li, one of the guards, bowing his head as he reported something to a stern-looking middle-aged man.
"You mean to say that the young master's injuries are too severe for him to be moved?" The stern man asked after hearing Li's report.
"Yes, Chief Steward. Old Doctor Chen said that the young master's condition is still unstable, and it would be best for him to remain here and rest quietly. It would be safer to return to the mansion once he wakes up and his body has recovered somewhat," Li replied.
"I want to see the young master." The stern man, addressed as the Chief Steward, did not immediately agree but instead made a request.
Li immediately looked to Old Doctor Chen for guidance.
The old doctor nodded. "Only one or two people should enter. Too many people could bring negative energy that might affect the young master's recovery."
Hearing this, the Chief Steward immediately said, "Everyone else, wait outside. Only I and Old Doctor Chen will go in."
"Yes, Chief Steward."
As the two men disappeared into the room, Lu Qing's eyes widened in shock.
He muttered to himself, "Internal Organs Realm..."
In the sickroom, the Chief Steward's expression turned grim as he approached the bed and saw the pale-faced young master with his eyes closed and lips cracked from dehydration.
His brow furrowed even deeper after examining the young master's abdominal wound.
Before arriving, he had thought that the two guards were exaggerating the severity of the young master's injuries to shirk responsibility.
Chapter 63: The Wei Family's Chief Steward
"It seems those two scoundrels not only lied, but also downplayed the severity of the young master's injuries."
"His life has been saved, and his condition is stable."
The Chief Steward, who also understood some medical principles, could tell that the young master's condition had truly reached a critical point, and he could pass away at any moment.
And this was after the doctor's treatment; he dared not imagine what state the young master had been in before.
Remembering the head of the Wei family's instructions, the Chief Steward turned to the old doctor and bowed deeply.
"Thank you, Old Doctor Chen, for saving the life of our young master. The Wei family will forever remember this kindness."
"You're too kind. I was merely fulfilling my duty as a healer." The old doctor waved his hand. "Moreover, your young master is not entirely out of danger yet, so it's too early to speak of gratitude."
The Chief Steward quickly said, "I heard that you needed ginseng, astragalus, and other herbs? Before we left, the head of our family specially instructed me to bring a lot of medicinal ingredients. Please follow me to choose the herbs."
"Oh, you brought ginseng?"
The old doctor's spirits lifted.
Although his medical skills were excellent, even a skilled cook couldn't make a delicious meal without the right ingredients. Without good medicinal ingredients, even his superb medical skills would be of little use.
The two returned to the courtyard.
"Bring up the box," the Chief Steward ordered.
Two men immediately carried a box and placed it before them.
Upon opening the box, they saw several long boxes inside.
The Chief Steward opened the boxes, revealing top-quality medicinal herbs that had been dried and cured.
There were over ten roots of ginseng alone.
Among them, Lu Qing spotted a few that were even larger than the two roots the little black beast had given him.
Lu Qing couldn't help but marvel at the depth of the Wei family's resources. A single box contained so many hundred-year-old ginseng roots.
"Old Doctor Chen, please use these medicinal ingredients as you see fit. If you need more, I'll send someone back to the mansion to retrieve them," the Chief Steward said respectfully.
"I won't need that much."
The old doctor smiled and took only a few boxes, selecting one each of ginseng, fleeceflower root, and astragalus.
"I'll go to the pharmacy to prepare the medicine now. You must be tired from your journey; please take a rest. If there's anything you need, just instruct my disciple here."
The old doctor pointed to Lu Qing.
The Chief Steward immediately bowed to Lu Qing. "We're troubling you, young sir."
"Not at all. Just let me know if you need anything," Lu Qing quickly returned the bow.
At the same time, he marveled once more.
As expected of someone from a prominent family, this Chief Steward held a high position and considerable authority within the Wei family.
Just looking at how Li and the other guards treated him revealed a deep-seated respect and fear.
Moreover, Lu Qing's ability had revealed that this Chief Steward was a martial artist in the Internal Organs Realm, a formidable figure.
Yet, even with his status and power, the Chief Steward remained humble and respectful when seeking help, giving others their due respect without abusing his position.
It was no wonder that the Wei family had risen from a mere county clan to a powerful and influential family with connections throughout the province.
Old Doctor Chen prepared the medicine quickly, and that very night, he had the life-saving soup ready.
He fed the soup to the young master of the Wei family under the watchful eye of the Chief Steward.
After a bowl of the medicinal soup and the old doctor's acupuncture treatment to stimulate its effects, the young master's pale face gradually regained a hint of color.
His breathing also became steadier, no longer as weak and frail as before.
Witnessing this change, the Chief Steward felt greatly relieved and had even more confidence in the old doctor's abilities.
What delighted the Chief Steward even more was that, early the next morning, as the sun rose, he saw the young master's eyelids flutter.
