Chapter 63: The True War Arrives
Chapter 63: The True War Arrives
By the evening, once his parents were fast asleep, Liam gathered a large amount of supplies and headed to the Multiverse General Store.
Using the newly learned Life Magic to investigate the Fire Dragon Grass on the counter, Liam finally understood why the new Plants had not grown. It turned out that he had injected the Plants with energy that was too high in grade (dragons being one of the apex creatures in the magical realm). As a result, the Plants lacked a soul, which was why they couldn't mature. After all, for a Plant to develop a soul, it required a long period of time.
However, Liam thought that his trip to the Plants vs. Zombies World might yield something that could help the Plant develop a soul.
After investigating the Plant, Liam opened a spatial portal and traveled to the Plants vs. Zombies World.
Upon arriving, he found it was already afternoon. Observing the town, Liam noticed that it had changed completely. The fallen Zombies and roadblocks had been cleared away, and the houses on both sides of the street had been repaired and showed signs of human activity.
The most noticeable change was in the center of town, where a massive Power Tower now stood in the small square in front of Dave's house. Even from several buildings away, Liam could see it.
Liam quickened his pace and arrived at Dave's door. Just as he was about to knock, the door opened.
"Oh, my friend from another world! The Plants have already told Dave you're here. It's been so long since I last saw you, and I've really missed you. Welcome, welcome." Dave patted Liam's shoulder and invited him inside.
Liam noticed that the house was much neater than on his previous visits. Dave proudly explained, "Ever since I created these robots, I've expanded the defense perimeter quite a bit. Now, the ordinary people who used to hide in the mountains can return. At least Dave can now enjoy hot, fresh meals."
As he spoke, a small robot walked by, wiping and cleaning with a cloth.
"These robots are really quite agile. I'm very impressed by the civilization that managed to make these robots so intelligent using just perforated steel plates and steam engines. By the way, I want to show you my latest and proudest invention. You won't believe it."
Dave led Liam to the square where the Power Tower was placed. Liam immediately noticed that this Power Tower seemed different from what he knew. The chimney at the top emitted only a slight wisp of white steam. In the world of Frostpunk, where the Power Tower originated, even when the coal combustion efficiency was maximized, the chimney still emitted thick black smoke and sparks.
"How did you manage to make the Power Tower emit no black smoke at all?" Liam turned to Dave and asked.
"Ah, that involves my secret weapon", Dave replied, nodding to the engineers around the Power Tower as he greeted them.
As they approached the Power Tower, Liam saw that its structure was different from what he had seen before. The area at the bottom, which should have been the combustion chamber, was lined with thick fireproof glass. It didn't look like an observation window but rather like a greenhouse at the bottom.
Wait, greenhouse! Liam seemed to have an idea and hurriedly ran to the glass. Sure enough, inside were a group of tree trunks emitting blue flames.
Dave caught up at this moment, putting an arm around Liam’s shoulders and pointing at the flaming tree trunks below. "Friend, take a look. As long as I feed them coffee beans and Sunlight Crystals regularly, they can keep burning like this indefinitely. This is much more environmentally friendly than the coal we used to burn, and there’s no need to worry about an energy crisis. I think I’m a genius for making this improvement."
"Indeed, it’s a brilliant idea", Liam agreed. "By the way, I’m here to give you some production processes and techniques for daily necessities, as well as some magical Plant seeds I brought back from a Nordic country during my recent journey. I also want to find some Zombies to practice my magic."
Dave took the items Liam handed him and gave the seeds to a robot. He then looked at the packet of paper documents and said, "These things are quite useful. Now that everyone is safe and doesn’t have to worry about food and clothing, they’re starting to need these items. Unfortunately, it’s been too long since the disaster, and many of the daily necessities produced before the disaster have expired and are no longer usable. Your materials are just what we need. Next time, you could bring a portable storage device; all these paper documents are a bit of a hassle."
"Can’t help it. The world I come from is at least a decade behind this one. I doubt you have any ancient computers that can read floppy disks here."
Dave nodded at this explanation and handed the materials to a staff member. He then said, "You said you want to find those Zombies? You’re in luck. I’ve just accumulated enough strength to reclaim the first city. Stay the night here, and we’ll set out tomorrow. You can come with us."
"Right", Dave added, as if remembering something. "Your house has been completely organized. The friends you introduced are living there now. But the house is large, so there’s plenty of room."
After saying goodbye to Dave, Liam went to his house, which was located behind Dave’s residence. This was the first time he had a chance to take a good look at his new home.
It was a two-story brick house with three bedrooms and a warm fireplace. Liam walked up to the front door and knocked. The door opened, and a young girl stepped out. It was Jennifer Scott, the daughter from the father-daughter duo he had met before.
Jennifer was surprised to see Liam and shouted into the house, "Dad, the guy who brought us to this world is back."
Soon, Kenvi, dressed in casual clothes, came out of the room and greeted Liam warmly, "Hello, Mr. Liam, please come in. I imagine you haven’t had dinner yet. I’ll call the restaurant and have them deliver dinner over."
Liam entered the living room and sat on the sofa, saying to Kenvi, "You seem to have adapted well to this life. You even know how to order takeout by phone."
"Thanks to you", Kenvi said, pouring Liam a cup of tea. "After I arrived, Mr. Dave read your letter and offered me a job in the reconnaissance team. I think it’s a good fit for me, especially since I can be sure that none of our enemies are innocent. He also arranged for my daughter to go to school with the other children. She’s doing much better now, thank you."
"Ah, as long as you’re both happy. I don’t want my promise to go unfulfilled", Liam replied, genuinely pleased to have helped those in need.
