Chapter 624: A Flake of Human Skin
Chapter 624: A Flake of Human Skin
"A piece of human skin?"
In the secret room, Qin Muye looked at the skin that was no longer in human form. This was what 'Ling Wei' had left behind.
The details of what happened were not necessary to recount. Essentially, the next day, Ling Wei was subdued by Qin Muye and Sun Zhen and dragged into the basement. Before they could do anything strange, she had transformed into this form.
At first, Qin Muye thought it might be some synthetic material or something else, but after a thorough examination, he confirmed it was indeed human skin.
This was something he had not expected. Sun Zhen, upon learning the truth, also found it difficult to accept.
Who would have thought that a person's true form could be a piece of skin, and this piece was not even large, only the size of a palm.
Qin Muye examined it closely and noticed the seams at the edges, suggesting it had been detached from something larger.
"A flake of skin from some massive creature," Qin Muye said.
"How big could it be?" Sun Zhen tried to calm himself and asked, seemingly glimpsing ancient secrets from this small piece of skin.
"I don't know, maybe very, very big," Qin Muye added mentally, 'or maybe it's man-made.'
"What should we do next? A living person turned into a piece of skin. If someone comes looking, we might be in trouble," Sun Zhen's expression was grim. Although he had been prepared, he still panicked when the situation arose.
"Don't worry, 'Ling Wei' has disappeared, just like she appeared suddenly," Qin Muye checked and found that everything related to this woman had vanished, as if she had never existed.
"If you don't believe me, call your parents and ask about your fiancee. They will most likely call you crazy."
All records, both online and in local databases, had disappeared. Even the property management staff who had been trying to get close to 'Ling Wei' had forgotten about her.
Everything seemed to have returned to normal.
Qin Muye was thinking about why she had reverted to her original form. From the moment of capture to confinement, he had never used lethal force, so it couldn't be because of him.
'Was it her name or identity?'
The only time he had spoken was to reveal that she was not a human but a ghost-human.
There was no other way to explain it.
Sun Zhen, who had gone to confirm, also breathed a sigh of relief. The memory that should not have existed in his parents' minds had indeed disappeared.
"It's finally over, next—"
"Who told you it's over? Don't you remember there's still one in your former company? The reason you were targeted by 'Ling Wei' is because of him. This isn't over yet," Qin Muye interrupted. "From the time you quit until now, it wasn't this newly born 'Ling Wei' who was after you. Once you uncover the identity of the ghost-human, they won't let you go."
"Remember, this is just one piece of skin. If it's from a massive, terrifying entity, can you imagine how many pieces of skin it has?"
Qin Muye's words made Sun Zhen, who had just calmed down, break out in a cold sweat. Just one 'Ling Wei,' could she be some great figure?
"Then we should deal with the supervisor first. I don't believe such a massive entity would dare to act openly!" Sun Zhen said, bracing himself.
"Are you sure it's a living creature and not something more conceptual? Are you sure that what your senses tell you is the real world?" Qin Muye's tone was calm.
But Sun Zhen was very anxious because he felt Qin Muye was right. If a single piece of skin could alter the world's magic, how terrifying must the main body be? As an ordinary person, how could he handle it?
"What should I do? Wait, how do you know all this? Have you experienced it before?" Sun Zhen stared at Qin Muye with wide eyes, wondering why he had come uninvited.
"Do you really think I would still be alive if I had experienced it? I'm just curious."
"But you're right. We should deal with the supervisor first, then go back to your hometown to find that ancient book. Maybe we can find something useful there."
"This needs to be done quickly. Otherwise, if we delay, I might still have a chance, but you, honestly, this piece of skin might have a predecessor who was also an informant."
Qin Muye spoke off the cuff. Although he didn't know the exact situation, he was aware of one thing: an Omega-level anomaly was wandering the world, possibly even undetected by the World Defense Organization.
To him, this was a huge treasure. Regardless of other factors, an anomaly that could cause such a significant disturbance definitely had a fragment of the World Source.
Ever since he obtained 0.3 units of the World Source from the Ghost Realm, he hadn't acquired much more over the past decade. The World Source could only be obtained from special entities like the Ghost Realm or the First Emperor, which required at least an Omega-level anomaly.
Disasters that could cause the end of the world or involve deities were rare. Even if they did occur, Qin Muye wouldn't voluntarily get involved, as doing so would make it a major event in the main quest. If he completed it, he would be teleported back, and the time discrepancy would be a loss.
However, this didn't mean he wouldn't actively gather relevant information. This was a new lead, and he needed to get involved. If things went south, he would be the first to run.
"How do we handle it? Should we find an opportunity to bind them? In broad daylight, we'll probably be caught within a couple of days." Sun Zhen admitted that Qin Muye had special abilities, but he didn't.
"No need for that. You just need to find a chance to reveal that they are a ghost-human. Then, they will revert to a piece of human skin." Qin Muye said seriously.
Sun Zhen recalled how 'Ling Wei' had transformed into a piece of skin, and it seemed Qin Muye was right.
"Alright, they should still be at the company. Let's set out immediately." Sun Zhen said immediately.
"Don't include me. Just go quickly and come back. I'll pack up and we'll head to your hometown later today." Qin Muye rolled his eyes. He wasn't going to join, and he didn't want to waste an hour on a bus ride.
Sun Zhen's face fell. Qin Muye was his main support, and without him, he didn't dare to go. What if he failed and was killed by the other party?
This wasn't an impossible scenario. He was just an ordinary person, and the other was a piece of skin from a terrifying entity. He was naturally afraid, and saying he wasn't would be a lie.
"You don't have anything to pack. Everything here is mine. We can go to the company, deal with the supervisor, and then head home directly. If I come back, I'll waste another hour."
"You haven't seen the endings of horror movies where splitting up leads to being picked off one by one. We need to act together."
At this point, Sun Zhen didn't care about anything else. He spoke with conviction, insisting that Qin Muye come along. Safety first, and if anything happened, he could rely on Qin Muye.
"I've seen the map. The train station is in the opposite direction of your company. Don't try to fool me." Qin Muye said calmly.
"Ah, then we'll take a plane!" Sun Zhen replied, knowing the airport wasn't on the other side.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed? If a ghost-human became the pilot, you might survive a jump from a train, but if something happens on a plane, you'd be lucky to keep a finger." Qin Muye was surprised that Sun Zhen would even consider taking a plane, knowing how terrifying ghost-humans were.
"..." Sun Zhen understood that Qin Muye was determined to make him go, but he quickly realized, "You're planning to use me as bait?"
Accompanying Sun Zhen wouldn't be a big deal for Qin Muye.
"Wow, you figured it out. Not bad for a little brain. Don't worry, it's not dangerous."
"You should know that I have a low presence. I can act unexpectedly and catch them off guard. If I stay with you, I'd be wasting this advantage."
Qin Muye spoke earnestly, but Sun Zhen wasn't entirely convinced.
"Don't fool me, but since you said that, I'll give it a try. If it doesn't work, remember to save me." Sun Zhen was hesitant but ultimately agreed to Qin Muye's request.
After all, they had reached this point, and he couldn't resist much more.
