Chapter 623: They, Appearing Silently
Chapter 623: They, Appearing Silently
According to Sun Zhen's account, this is both an individual and a group, referred to in the ancient text as "RenGui," which roughly translates to ghosts masquerading as humans.
If you are unaware, they will just be an unfamiliar acquaintance in your life. However, if you know the truth, they will start to haunt you.
The ancient text does not specify what the RenGui intend to do, as it was left unfinished.
"Here’s a small issue: why weren’t you affected?" Qin Muye asked.
He was unaffected due to his strength, but for Sun Zhen to be unaffected was puzzling. His supervisor had inexplicably developed various social connections and networks, embedded in both online data and people's memories, which should not have been possible.
Even when Qin Muye used network technology to investigate, he found no discrepancies. From consumption records to marriage and children, everything checked out.
As for Qin Muye, it was normal for him to be unaware, as he had no prior knowledge of the person. Unless he had discovered the information first and then encountered the person, he would have no reason to monitor a regular company, especially one with which he had no connection. Knowing everything would make him omniscient.
"Perhaps it’s because I read the ancient text. Those who know about the RenGui are not affected by them," Sun Zhen said after a moment of silence, offering his hypothesis.
For example, 'Ling Wei.' He even asked his parents, and they confirmed her existence, even mentioning that they wanted him to return and marry her.
"There’s a good chance of that. However, since they are RenGui, the ancient text doesn’t mention any harm. Why didn’t you go along with it? From her appearance, I doubt you could find someone like her through regular matchmaking," Qin Muye said, curious.
Most people’s values align with their appearance, and many aspire to be like Ning Caichen. While the RenGui’s behavior is peculiar, their appearance is undeniable, and many people could be swayed.
Sun Zhen smiled bitterly, "Don’t tease me. I’m not interested in RenGui."
"Still, you should be more careful. Now that you’re involved, you might end up with an engagement in a few days," Qin Muye warned.
Sun Zhen nodded, feeling like he was in the same boat.
On the contrary, Qin Muye’s eyes lit up, "If I could find someone who doesn’t mind my appearance, I’d take the RenGui with me."
Sun Zhen looked at Qin Muye with a strange expression. In his eyes, Qin Muye, while not breathtakingly handsome, was still a regular person, and finding a partner shouldn’t be a problem.
What Sun Zhen didn’t know was that Qin Muye’s true form couldn’t be described as ugly; it was more chaotic and twisted, existing in a different dimension.
However, he thought, the RenGui wouldn’t likely come for him, as they couldn’t find him or even know his name.
Over time, the causal connection would weaken, and Qin Muye’s presence would gradually fade until the RenGui forgot about him.
This ability also worked on anomalies, though it took longer than with humans, who might forget something as soon as they turned their heads.
For example, once Qin Muye left Sun Zhen’s house, Sun Zhen would immediately forget him unless they interacted again, which would restore his memory.
Otherwise, even if Qin Muye stood right in front of him, Sun Zhen would ignore him.
So, as long as he waited long enough, the RenGui would forget about Qin Muye.
"What should I do?" Sun Zhen asked boldly.
Qin Muye proposed three solutions: "Dismember and boil them, then flush them down the septic tank; knock them out, pour concrete, and dump them in the sea; or brick them into the foundation of a construction site. Which one do you choose?"
"..." Sun Zhen thought these were not options for a sane person.
Any of these actions would land him in jail, possibly facing execution due to the severity.
While the RenGui are not human, they have a legal social identity. If they go missing, someone will report it, and the surveillance footage would leave no place to run.
It’s not like they were living in ancient times; the streets are full of cameras.
"Is there a slightly more moderate solution?"
Sun Zhen said tactfully, "There is another way. When 'Ling Wei' comes again, we can lock her in the basement and study her. You can claim that you're cohabiting with her."
"Once I figure out the secrets of the RenGui, maybe I can find a way to deal with them," Qin Muye thought that his three previous suggestions were indeed a bit extreme. However, there were more moderate options, like locking her in the basement to study her anatomy, which was more tactful.
"You don't seem to be conducting a proper study. I feel like this is illegal," Sun Zhen thought this was a lot more tactful, but the problem was that it was still very risky.
"Look at what you're saying. Of course, it's illegal; it's called illegal detention. But don't worry, it won't be my problem. I have a low presence, so when something goes wrong, I can just run away, and no one will remember me," Qin Muye indicated that Sun Zhen should take the responsibility.
"???" Sun Zhen understood that this person was definitely a pit, a very risky one.
The other party had a special ability, which Sun Zhen reluctantly called a low presence. It seemed useless at first, but when something went wrong, it could be very useful.
"Is there a more moderate option, one that doesn't violate the law?" Sun Zhen did not want to end up in prison.
"Of course, you can report it to the authorities," Qin Muye looked at Sun Zhen as if he were a fool.
Sun Zhen's face darkened. This was even less reliable. Since the RenGui had official identities, no one would believe him, and it might alert the RenGui.
What if the RenGui killed him and replaced him? Given that the RenGui could create identities out of thin air, replacing him wouldn't be difficult.
Then he would die in vain.
"I think you should trust the law enforcement to help you. Alright, I'll leave now. Good luck," Qin Muye said, encouraging Sun Zhen to stay alive.
"Wait, let's talk about locking her in the basement for research," Sun Zhen compromised. He was afraid to report it.
"Are you sure? I still think reporting it is the better option," Qin Muye said seriously. His suggestion was genuine. If the World Security Organization got involved, a mere RenGui, no matter how well-hidden, would likely just be contained.
This thing was at most an Alpha-level anomaly, possibly long-lived but certainly not an Omega-level one.
Even if the RenGui hadn't killed or endangered civilization, it could still be a Beta-level anomaly.
After all, anomalies were classified based on their threat, not their power.
So, among Qin Muye's suggestions, reporting it was the most reliable. The other two options were feasible for Qin Muye but not for Sun Zhen.
However, Sun Zhen didn't know this, and Qin Muye couldn't tell him, so he chose a slightly less risky option.
"No, let's go with locking her in the basement!" Sun Zhen gritted his teeth, determined to go down this path.
In Sun Zhen's eyes, although Qin Muye was a bit of a pit and a bit risky, he was still a person. The RenGui, however, were not. He didn't want to suddenly have a lot of 'relatives' or for his 'children' to appear out of nowhere, even a whole lineage taking over his life.
More importantly, he couldn't resist. The mental torture would be unimaginable. Even if the RenGui did nothing, the pressure alone could drive him to an early grave. The term 'dying of depression' was not just a figure of speech but a real possibility.
"Alright, let's go with locking her in the basement. But you don't have a basement, right? No problem, I can modify your place," Qin Muye thought this kid was on the right track.
Since that was the case, he couldn't be stingy. A basement didn't have to be underground; it could be an extradimensional space.
Sun Zhen lived on the 12th floor, with neighbors above and below. Digging down was impossible, so he would have to use some advanced technology.
"Wait, I live on the 12th floor. Don't dig down?" Sun Zhen was about to say that there were people below, but he noticed that Qin Muye seemed a bit off and pulled out a large crystal.
He was gesturing with it, and Sun Zhen didn't know what to say. Was he planning to sell the crystal and buy a house with a basement, or was he going to use some method beyond Sun Zhen's imagination?
