Chapter 623: Harry Needs Some Luck
Chapter 623: Harry Needs Some Luck
Hector was efficient. After receiving the letter, he promptly sent a bottle of Felix Felicis to Albert, charging him the market standard price of 30 Galleons. The potion would last for twenty-four hours, and the master potion maker included a reminder in the letter, cautioning against overdosing on Felix Felicis, as it could lead to dizziness, recklessness, and grandiose delusions, among other side effects.
"The price is much lower than I expected!"
Albert was pleased with the price of 30 Galleons per bottle. He knew that Hector was giving him a good deal, and the so-called standard market price was just for show. After all, it was a rare commodity, and even on the black market, it was doubtful that one could buy Felix Felicis even at double the price.
"You think 30 Galleons is low?"
The Weasley twins, Fred and George, had complicated expressions on their faces as they heard Albert's naive comment, their eyes fixed on the small package in his hands. "I guess only you would say something like that," they muttered.
Lee Jordan urged, "Come on, open the package!"
Albert carefully unwrapped the parcel to reveal a securely protected bottle. The golden potion within seemed almost mesmerizing.
There was no denying it; the contents of that bottle were far more valuable than gold! "With your potion-making skills, you could brew Felix Felicis and sell it in the future. I'm sure you'd make a fortune," Fred said, though he'd lost count of how many times he'd made similar remarks.
If only his own potion-making skills were better, he would have loved to brew and sell Felix Felicis himself.
"It would be the perfect product," George mused softly, his eyes reflecting the golden potion as if he were envisioning a river of gold. "Who wouldn't want some luck?"
"Don't be silly," Lee Jordan said bluntly, shattering their fantasy as he watched Albert walk away. "Don't forget the process of brewing Felix Felicis from Advanced Potion-Making. Just looking at the long list of ingredients is enough to make your head spin, not to mention the six-month brewing process where a single mistake could turn your potion into an unknown poison, wasting all your previous efforts."
"I don't think that would be a problem for Albert," the twins replied confidently, never doubting Albert's potion-making abilities. The real question was whether it was worth spending half a year to brew Felix Felicis. This was also why there were so few potion masters who truly mastered the art of making this potion—it required a lengthy six-month commitment.
How many times could one afford to fail and start over? And how many six-month periods could one spare?
Moreover, the potion master had to be the first to test the Felix Felicis, much like a chef tasting a dish made with blowfish.
Failure could very well result in a trip to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.
Ron, who had been playing Wizard's Chess with Harry, couldn't contain his curiosity any longer. "What's that golden potion?" he asked.
Fred and George noticed the gleam of curiosity in Ron's eyes and deliberately put on serious expressions. "That's Felix Felicis, the legendary luck potion. You'll learn about brewing it in your sixth year during Advanced Potion-Making class," they explained.
"Luck potion?" Ron found it hard to believe that such a potion truly existed.
In fact, Harry, sitting across from Ron, was also intrigued by the idea of a luck potion. He had never seen a potion with that unique color before.
"Of course, it's real!" George exclaimed, giving Ron's shoulder a friendly pat. "Your lack of knowledge is showing, my friend. As far as we know, there are potions that can make you smarter, too. Just last year, a student tried to use one during an exam."
"Really?" Ron asked, his eyes widening.
"Absolutely," Lee Jordan chimed in without hesitation. "Take dragon claw powder, for instance. It has similar effects, and it's one of the easiest things for a Hogwarts student to get their hands on. I think it's about ten Galleons a pint."
"Ten Galleons a pint?" Ron repeated, his voice trailing off as the reality of his financial situation hit him. "Ten Galleons..."
In that moment, Ron felt like a pauper. He had never had more than one Galleon in his pocket at any given time.
"How much would a bottle of the luck potion cost?" Harry asked Fred in a lowered voice. He felt that a little luck might be just what he needed.
"You want to buy some?" Fred asked, his eyes widening in surprise.
"Yes," Harry replied.
"Thirty Galleons a bottle," Lee Jordan quickly interjected.
"If it works, that's not a bad price," Harry murmured to himself. He felt that if the luck potion could help him catch the Slytherin heir and clear his name, it would be well worth the price.
Ron was stunned. Thirty Galleons for that tiny bottle of luck potion?
Thirty Galleons! And Harry had just said that the price wasn't too bad! Ron stood there, completely dumbfounded.
"Where can I buy some Felix Felicis?" Harry asked eagerly.
"No idea. You'd have to ask Albert. Apparently, he got it from a friend," Fred and George replied, giving Harry a second look as if they had just realized that there was a hidden wealthy fellow among them.
As soon as Albert came out of the dormitory, Harry approached him about wanting to buy Felix Felicis.
"What do you need Felix Felicis for?" Albert asked, puzzled by Harry's sudden interest and financial prowess. He saw an opportunity to fleece this clueless rich kid.
"They say it brings good luck!" Harry gestured to Fred, George, and Lee Jordan. "I heard you paid thirty Galleons for it. Could you..."
"No," Albert refused flatly.
"What do you mean, no? What are you two talking about?"
Hermione, who had just returned to the common room, looked curiously at Harry and Albert, then turned to Ron with a quizzical expression.
"Harry wants to buy some luck potion," Ron said dryly. "Apparently, it costs thirty Galleons per bottle."
"Luck potion?" Hermione frowned, looking at Harry. "Why do you need luck potion?"
"Maybe a little luck will help us catch the Slytherin heir or find the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets," Harry explained. He didn't hide the fact that he wanted the potion mainly to solve the attack incidents. He hoped that Albert could help him get a bottle or sell him the one he had, even if it meant paying a slightly higher price.
"Didn't you tell him?" Hermione looked at Albert.
"What?"
Harry and Ron were both confused.
"Felix Felicis doesn't bring real luck. Even if you use it, it won't bring you true luck!" Albert explained. "So, even if you drink it, it won't directly lead you to the Chamber of Secrets. Its effect is to make you feel content and satisfied during the duration of the potion. Also, Felix Felicis is hard to come by, and I can't ask my source to sell me another bottle at a low price."
"It doesn't bring true luck?"
"Do you really think there's a potion that can bring good luck?" Albert huffed. "If you don't believe me, you can go to the library and borrow Advanced Potion-Making. It has a detailed introduction and brewing method for Felix Felicis."
Seeing Harry head towards the common room entrance, Hermione quickly caught up and asked, "Harry, where are you going?"
"The library," Harry replied.
His intention was clear—he wanted to verify if Albert was telling the truth.
Having read the recipe for Felix Felicis, Hermione sighed and explained, "The so-called 'good luck' that Felix Felicis brings is mainly due to a significant boost in various abilities, such as social skills, magical power, reaction speed, and so on, making one feel that everything is going their way."
Harry opened his mouth, then closed it again, looking a little disappointed.
"Is Felix Felicis really that expensive?" Ron was curious. The high price of thirty Galleons was a lot to take in.
If possible, he would love to learn how to make potions right now and brew Felix Felicis to make a fortune.
"It's normal. Felix Felicis takes six months to brew, and you can't make any mistakes during that time," Hermione explained, not understanding why Ron was so concerned about the price. "That's why it's rarely available for purchase."
"Where did Albert get his Felix Felicis, then?"
"He knows a lot of potion masters like Snape. Someone must have brewed it, and they might have some in stock," Hermione guessed, though she couldn't understand why Albert would spend a lot of money on the potion.
"I think if it were you, you could probably..."
Ron looked at Hermione expectantly, hoping to hear her say, "Actually, I can."
"No, I can't," Hermione said firmly. "Felix Felicis is too complex. I doubt anyone in the school can brew it successfully except Snape."
At that moment, both Harry and Ron fell silent.
