Chapter 623: Champion Fighting Fire Dragons
Chapter 623: Champion Fighting Fire Dragons
The stark contrast in size between the wizard and the dragon made the young wizards in the stands worry immensely. A few timid witches even screamed and covered their eyes as Fleur approached the dragon.
However, Fleur, well-prepared, did not choose to confront the dragon head-on. Instead, she circled around it continuously.
The Swedish Short-Snout’s temper was relatively mild, showing no intention to attack. It only emitted threatening roars, guarding its nest steadfastly.
Due to the distance and the stands in between, Ivan could not see clearly. He only vaguely noticed Fleur holding her wand, muttering something, and continuing to circle around the dragon. Soon, the dragon’s movements became unsteady.
Ivan guessed this must be some kind of special hypnotic magic.
However, the dragon’s magic resistance was outstanding. Fleur had to keep at it for a full half-hour before the Swedish Short-Snout finally succumbed to sleep, collapsing on the ground.
Fleur heaved a sigh of relief and cautiously approached, her heart racing as she passed by the dragon. The entire audience held their breath, fearing the dragon might suddenly wake up.
Fleur was also on edge, taking small, careful steps and keeping a vigilant eye on the ground to avoid making any noise that might rouse the sleeping dragon.
This short journey of just a dozen meters took Fleur over a minute.
As she bent down to grab the Golden Egg, Fleur’s tense emotions finally relaxed. She knew she had succeeded!
However, before she could celebrate, the audience’s gasps of shock pulled her back to reality. A rapidly growing shadow suddenly blocked the sunlight, and Fleur’s heart filled with dread.
Without turning around, she knew the Swedish Short-Snout had woken up!
In the split second of facing death, Fleur made the right decision. She didn’t turn back but instead dove forward, narrowly avoiding the descending claw. The scattered stones hit her, leaving cuts on her body.
The deafening dragon roar left her ears ringing and her head spinning, but she managed to push herself up from the ground.
As a mother dragon, seeing her “child” being taken away ignited a fierce rage. Blazing dragon breath erupted, aimed directly at Fleur, who was still recovering.
Fortunately, the Dragon Keepers surrounding the area rushed in, casting several Protective Charms that successfully blocked the Swedish Short-Snout’s fiery wrath. Then, a barrage of Crimson Beams hit the dragon’s face, quickly knocking it unconscious again.
Fleur, though only lightly injured, was left with significant psychological trauma. Her body trembled as she left the arena.
Harry and Krum, watching the competition from behind the curtain in the tent, were on the edge of their seats. The dragons were even more dangerous than they had anticipated.
Ivan silently assessed the combat capabilities of these top-tier magical creatures—their massive size, scorching dragon breath, and exceptional resistance to magic.
If it came to a one-on-one confrontation, Ivan believed that even a professionally trained wizard would likely only manage a hasty retreat when facing a dragon.
This could be compared to a primitive human with a spear facing an enraged mammoth. The slightest touch would mean certain death, and only a group effort could ensure a successful hunt.
Of course, wizards had higher limits.
If it were Dumbledore or Voldemort, subduing a dragon would be as simple as a wave of their wand.
Most of the professors at the school also had the ability to defeat a dragon one-on-one, though it would require significant effort and might result in injuries.
In summary, dragons were extremely powerful magical creatures. Ivan felt that, barring any unexpected developments, one of the four bloodlines he had prepared would be a dragon!
Just as Ivan was thinking, the sharp whistle sounded again.
Harry's body tensed, and he pursed his lips, realizing it was his turn to step onto the field.
"Go on! Don't be too nervous, just do your best!" Ivan encouraged him.
Harry nodded and walked out with the same determination as a man walking to his execution.
Once on the field, Harry faced the formidable Hungarian Horntail, a dragon so powerful that any direct confrontation seemed futile. He tried to calm his emotions and followed the strategy he had planned—drawing his wand, he cast the Summoning Charm, calling for his Firebolt!
Fortunately, the countless hours of practice from the previous day had not been in vain. The Firebolt responded well, flying directly from the castle to Harry.
Harry reached out, grabbed the Firebolt, and mounted it, feeling a sense of familiarity as if he were back on the Quidditch pitch. The Golden Egg was like a stationary Golden Snitch, and the Hungarian Horntail was akin to a combination of a Slytherin Beater and Keeper.
With this thought, Harry gained some confidence and, despite the audience's gasps, charged directly at the Hungarian Horntail.
Such a provocative act naturally enraged the already vicious Hungarian Horntail. The dragon's breath spewed out continuously, exploding mid-air, and the flames blotted out the sky. Harry sought gaps and weaved left and right, dodging the dragon's claws.
Bursts of dark brown light shot from Harry's wand, striking the dragon's face but with little effect.
Harry immediately realized that his Blinding Spell was too weak; it needed to hit the dragon's eyes directly to have any significant impact. So, he engaged in a fierce battle with the Hungarian Horntail, trying to find an opening!
The intense chase thrilled the young wizards watching, and Harry's moments of peril elicited screams of excitement from the crowd.
In the tent, Krum watched as Harry cast the Blinding Spell, and his face turned green!
Using the Blinding Spell against a dragon was a strategy he and Karkaroff had discussed for a long time, and flying was his strongest skill. Now, both of these methods were being used by Harry!
What am I supposed to do now? Krum felt his limbs turn cold and his mind go blank.
Ivan, noticing Krum's sudden change in expression, felt a bit of sympathy. Krum now had two options: either copy Harry and risk being accused of plagiarism, or come up with a new plan on the spot.
But Karkaroff had been targeting him, so Ivan decided to make things difficult for the Durmstrang Champion!
While this was happening, Harry had successfully hit the dragon's eyes.
Blinded, the Hungarian Horntail lost all sense of direction and began attacking everything around it blindly, letting out furious roars.
Seizing this opportunity, Harry charged beneath the Hungarian Horntail, narrowly avoiding two stomps. Relying on the speed of the Firebolt, he snatched the Golden Egg, earning cheers from the crowd!
As Harry left the field, the Dragon Keepers rushed in to clean up the mess, accompanied by Ludo Bagman's whistle.
