Chapter 62: Garlic Invincible Arc (9)
Chapter 62: Garlic Invincible Arc (9)
"What kind of crazy twist is this?" Feng Bu Jue muttered. "The doctor Task wants to rescue is actually the antagonist?" His mind flashed back to his earlier deductions, cross-referencing them with the mission details. A few seconds later, his expression shifted subtly. "Could Ashiford be the culprit behind the murders and poisonings? Did he escape the lab and use some device on the rooftop to release a virus variant across the city? That would explain why the infection spread like wildfire—and why I haven’t encountered a single survivor yet!" He cursed, "This bastard’s some kind of lizard doctor!"
Since he was alone and no surveillance systems were active nearby, the system didn’t bother censoring his outburst.
"Wait a second…" Feng Bu Jue paused mid-thought. "Who exactly are those two—Pan Feng and Hua Xiong? They headed straight for the main quest the moment they entered the building, like they already knew the underground lab wasn’t necessary to complete the mission." He frowned, piecing it together. "Normally, the plot should unfold like this: players enter the building, go to the lab first, find the serum, defeat a minor boss, then uncover clues pointing to Dr. Ashiford as the antagonist. Only after following those hints would they confront the boss upstairs. But what are those two up to? Charging straight to the top to expose the boss and then beating it into submission?"
Xiao Tan was still alive, and Feng Bu Jue was fairly certain he was working with those two. But Xiao Tan wasn’t the type to give orders—or to take them, for that matter. There was no reason for him to direct two players who were clearly stronger than average.
"So… they’re acting on their own initiative, and somehow they’re always right…"
The more Feng Bu Jue thought about it, the more uneasy he felt. He steadied his breathing, suppressing his rising excitement, then loaded his Winchester shotgun and stormed out the door.
Earlier exploration had been rushed, but he’d memorized the route, using zombie corpses as landmarks. He returned to the elevator shaft at record speed. Thanks to his "Jazzy Moves" perk, he sprinted without tiring, moving at a pace that would leave other players gasping.
Ten minutes later, Feng Bu Jue reached the ground-floor elevator. He’d left in such a hurry earlier that he hadn’t cleared the corpses blocking the doors. After dragging seven or eight bodies into the corridor, he boarded the elevator and returned to the lobby, where he ran into Wang Tan Zhi.
"Hey, Xiao Tan!" Feng Bu Jue called out.
Xiao Tan turned, surprised. "Huh? Feng Bu Jue, why are you—"
"Save the chatter", Feng Bu Jue cut in, tossing him an anti-toxin serum. "Drink this."
"What’s this?" Xiao Tan asked, inspecting the item’s attributes as he caught it.
"I got it from the underground lab", Feng Bu Jue replied.
"Ah? What about the other two—"
"They died elsewhere", Feng Bu Jue interrupted, already knowing the question.
The two exchanged brief updates before heading to the building’s upper floors. As they climbed, they shared their experiences.
Xiao Tan’s account confirmed Feng Bu Jue’s suspicions about Pan Feng and Hua Xiong. Their strength alone wasn’t the issue—it was their actions. They’d bypassed all clues and gone straight to Ashiford. Either they had insane luck or prior knowledge no ordinary player should possess.
Together, they reached the 51st floor. Up to the 47th, they followed the same route Xiao Tan had taken with Pan and Hua. The remaining four floors were uncharted, but fresh monster corpses guided their way.
"Did you backtrack or hit any dead ends when you first came up with them?" Feng Bu Jue asked near the top.
Xiao Tan thought. "Actually, no. But we’ve already switched elevators twice and zigzagged through multiple staircases—" He paused. "Wait… how did they know exactly where to switch stairs?"
"They knew the route too…" Feng Bu Jue murmured.
By the time they reached the 52nd floor, their conversation ended. Emerging from the stairwell, they entered a corridor lined with flowerpots every ten meters. A glass wall ahead revealed a sprawling office space occupying the entire floor—rows of desks, chairs, computers, water dispensers, and storage racks. Two isolated offices stood at either end.
The blueprint had labeled this floor as "Office Area"—and nothing more.
They advanced cautiously through the corridor, passing an automatic door into the open workspace. No bloodstains. No zombies. That silence was ominous—a sign of something far worse.
Feng Bu Jue barely had time to survey the area before the ceiling exploded. A deformed humanoid creature crashed through the roof, sending cement shards clattering to the floor. Thick dust billowed from the collapse.
From the same hole, two more figures leapt down—Pan Feng and Hua Xiong.
Chaos erupted. Axes and spears flashed in a blur, slicing through flesh with wet thuds. Blood spread across the floor.
For a minute, the trio clashed in the dust-choked air. Cornered, the monster suddenly bolted toward the glass wall. Pan and Hua knew escape was imminent—they couldn’t let it flee, or the scenario’s conclusion would slip away.
Hua Xiong lunged, spinning to thrust his spear at the creature’s head. The weapon blurred as it pierced the left eye socket, exiting through the hindbrain in a spray of foul liquid.
But the injury wasn’t fatal. The monster absorbed the blow, dodging Pan Feng’s axe by curling into a ball. It slammed its elbow—a jagged bone protrusion—into the glass, cracking it. Then it rolled outward, shattering the window and plunging into the open sky.
Pan and Hua rushed to the edge, watching the mutated form plummet. After a brief fall, suction cups and mucus sprouted from its body, anchoring it to the building’s exterior. It slithered downward, vanishing from sight.
"Cheh… still got away", Pan Feng spat.
"Predictable", Hua Xiong replied. "Engaging the boss without other players present must’ve triggered higher AI responses."
A voice cut through the dust. "Mind explaining something?"
The two turned sharply to see Feng Bu Jue’s cold stare and Wang Tan Zhi’s puzzled expression.
"Who exactly are you two?" Feng Bu Jue demanded.
