Chapter 618: The Law of Time (First Update)
Chapter 618: The Law of Time (First Update)
Evening, Queens, New York Police Department.
Sheriff John Foster, having just returned from his shift, parked his police car in the police station's courtyard. He was about to go inside to clock out when he suddenly noticed a little girl, around ten years old, lying on the lawn.
"Hey, little one, wake up. You can't lie here like that; you'll catch a cold. Where are your parents?"
The girl was shaken awake by John, looking confused.
John spoke gently, "What's your name, little one? Why are you lying here? Are you lost? Where do you live? I can take you home."
"I think my name is Lily. Uncle police officer, I don't know why I'm lying here. I don't remember where my home is or my family."
Lily opened her eyes and looked at the police officer, trying hard to recall her memories. Apart from knowing her name was Lily and that she was eleven years old, she remembered nothing else.
John was taken aback for a moment before he helped Lily up and said kindly, "It's okay. Let's go inside and rest for a bit. It's a bit cold out here. Uncle will help you find your family."
Thus, Sheriff John led Lily into the police station.
Half a month later, at the Foster household, John and his wife Mary nervously spoke to Lily, who was sitting in a chair.
"We're sorry, Lily. We've checked all the records, but we couldn't find your family. If you're willing, Mary and I would like to adopt you as our daughter."
Since the day John found the amnesiac girl named Lily at the police station, they couldn't immediately locate her family, so they took her in to care for her temporarily. They planned to return her to her parents once they found them.
However, after half a month of searching, even reviewing all the surveillance footage around the police station, they found no trace of Lily's family. It was as if she had fallen from the sky.
Under normal circumstances, Lily would have been placed with a suitable family for adoption. However, after spending half a month with her, John and Mary had grown fond of the well-behaved and understanding Lily.
Moreover, due to health issues, they were unable to have more children. So, they felt that this might be a daughter sent to them by God. They decided to formally adopt Lily to fill the void in their lives.
Seeing the nervous John and Mary, Lily didn't hesitate and nodded in agreement.
The first person she remembered meeting was John, and her memories before that were blank. John and Mary had been very kind to her during this time, so she was happy to have them as her parents.
The next day, John and Mary completed all the adoption procedures with Lily.
Another half a month passed. One day, while Lily was helping Mary clean the house, an owl suddenly landed on the balcony, dropped a letter, and flew away.
Lily, curious, picked up the letter.
The envelope was made of parchment, and it read:
"To Miss Lily Foster, 277 Gran Street, Queens, New York."
"Is this for me?"
Lily looked at the recipient's name on the letter, her face showing confusion. Apart from her adoptive parents and neighbors, she didn't know anyone else.
She flipped the letter over, and a prominent wax seal caught her eye. The seal was adorned with a long-horned water snake, a strange bird, a six-legged cat, and a goblin?
Tearing open the envelope, Lily began to read the contents of the letter:
“Headmaster of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: Agilbert Fontana
Dear Miss Lily Foster,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Enclosed is a list of all necessary books and equipment.
The school term begins on September 1st. I will personally visit your home tomorrow morning at nine o'clock to collect your reply.
Deputy Headmistress
Danielle Peck”
“Mom, Mom, I received a letter delivered by an owl! A Magic school wants to admit me!”
As Lily was stunned by the acceptance letter from the Magic school, Jerry, hovering above her house, nodded in satisfaction.
“After all this effort, I’ve finally completed most of it. The next step is to modify the Time Law.”
Jerry had created a cloned Lily and sent her to America to attend the Magic school, so she could grow up freely into a truly complete human being.
The Lily Snape would meet in the future, although not Lily Evans, would be a real witch with her own emotions and experiences.
However, to prevent Lily Foster from falling in love with someone else before meeting Snape, Jerry implanted two mental suggestions in her mind.
The first suggestion was that Lily would not fall in love with anyone before the age of thirty-four. The second would only be triggered when she received a specific message at the age of thirty-four.
Of course, these were not difficult for Jerry. The real challenge was the potential impact of adding a person to the timeline twenty-three years ago, which could affect the Time Law and the future world.
After all, the effect of a butterfly flapping its wings could cause a storm. Adding a real person to the timeline was even more significant.
Although Lily was added in America rather than Britain, it could still have a substantial impact on the world.
According to the Time Law of this world, history should not be altered. If it were, it could lead to catastrophic consequences and powerful backlash.
Jerry had once read about a witch who, relying on her deep understanding of Time Magic, had attempted to change events during time travel. This resulted in a series of chain reactions, with people mysteriously disappearing or appearing, and the witch herself vanishing from the world due to the powerful backlash when time corrected itself.
However, with Jerry’s current understanding of the Mini World Law, he could minimize this backlash. With his powerful abilities, he could easily handle the negligible aftereffects.
Essentially, he would use his understanding of the law to interface with the world, subtly manipulate the Time Law, and correct the butterfly effects caused by Lily’s presence. This would allow the world to continue on its original path.
The process was complex. For example, without Lily, the Fosters would have adopted another child. Now, with Lily’s presence, that child would be adopted by someone else, altering history.
