Chapter 617: Follow, Don't Lose Her
Chapter 617: Follow, Don't Lose Her
At night, Qin Muye squatted outside a morgue. He had already searched the entire apartment building and found nothing unusual, so he could only follow the corpse here.
"Eating an ice cream stick outside a morgue, that's truly one of a kind," Qin Muye said somewhat helplessly. If not for waiting for the corpse to come back to life and face some unknown AOE, why would he bother waiting here?
As for the First Emperor's Spirit Core? Well, maybe he would encounter it in some plot events. Otherwise, what else could he do, just wander around aimlessly?
"From what I can see, the temporary skills of extras still have a certain range limit. Plot events that are too far away cannot be triggered."
The anomalies in this parallel world are numerous, so it's probable that only events within a certain range will manifest.
Time quickly passed, and it was already midnight. The morgue door directly opened, and a woman with a dazed expression walked out, seemingly not noticing Qin Muye at all.
Qin Muye poked his head in to check the morgue, feeling a bit bewildered.
"This is odd, why did only the woman come back to life? Why is the man still a puddle of goo? Is this anomaly sexist, or why did it only revive the woman?"
He went over and poked the man, but there was no sign of life. Clearly, the anomaly didn't include him in its effects.
"So where is this unknown AOE?" Qin Muye fell silent for a moment before leaving the morgue to follow her.
The woman walked out of the morgue, swaying as if she were being guided by something, and walked down the road openly.
Qin Muye, munching on his ice cream stick, slowly followed behind, considering whether to give her a push to keep her moving.
"What are you doing, lurking around like that?"
A beam of light emerged from the security booth, and a middle-aged man in a security uniform scolded Qin Muye.
"I've been watching you follow that girl. Come here."
The security guard, holding a baton, walked out, his tone stern.
Qin Muye couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time. Well, this must be the unknown AOE. Following an anomaly and being mistaken for a pervert.
"I'm the staff member at the morgue. Here's my ID," Qin Muye said, showing his credentials.
"Morgue? So what? Let me tell you—"
"I'm on duty tonight. That girl is scheduled for cremation tomorrow," Qin Muye interrupted.
"Cremation? So what if she's cremated? Wait, don't just make things up." The middle-aged security guard was initially confused, but he shivered after Qin Muye's words.
"Here, look at this file. Your security booth must have surveillance equipment, right? Why don't we check it?" Qin Muye said, showing the woman's file, which had the seal of the funeral home and a copy of the death certificate.
The security guard, half-believing and half-doubting, took the file, compared it with the surveillance footage, and broke out in a cold sweat.
"Kid, are you young people all this brave these days?" The middle-aged security guard felt his job might be too much for him.
After all, the funeral home wasn't far from here. If he could see something like this today, had he seen it before without noticing?
"Sure, I just started today and ran into this. Why don't we follow her and see where this female corpse is going?" Qin Muye invited him very enthusiastically.
"No, no, I still have to stand guard. I..." The middle-aged security guard suddenly fell silent mid-sentence.
At some point, the woman, who had walked away, was standing next to the security booth, her face very pale, with visible stitches, looking exactly like the photo in the file.
"Excuse me, does any of you know where my home is?" The woman's voice was hoarse, as if something was stuck in her throat.
"Sure, it's at—" Qin Muye picked up the file and read the address from it.
"Thank you." With that, the woman left like a ghost.
"Take care." Qin Muye waved goodbye and then looked at the middle-aged security guard. "Don't mind her hoarse voice. It's because her bones were dislocated when she fell, and they got stuck in her throat. Otherwise, her voice would be fine. But they didn't correct her bones, which is a bit unprofessional."
The middle-aged security guard, listening to Qin Muye's serious explanation, felt that this young man might not be quite right himself.
He swallowed hard, determined to resign, not tomorrow, but today. He couldn't take this job anymore. If something else crawled out of the morgue, he would die of a midlife crisis.
"Right, you really won't come with me to see? What if another one crawls out in the middle of the night? I'm telling you, this girl didn't jump alone; she had a partner who jumped with her, and he's still lying in the morgue. But don't worry, I locked the morgue, so he probably can't come out."
"If he does come out, he'll probably ask you for directions, too." The security guard's hair stood on end. This is a threat, definitely a threat.
"Fine, I'll go with you." The security guard said with a bitter smile. He was genuinely scared.
"Wait, I'll call some people to gather some courage!"
He wasn't foolish; what if something happened to him if he went alone? It would be safer with a few more people.
Soon, he called the other night-shift security guards, and they rode their electric scooters to catch up.
The woman was walking, and if she hadn't teleported when asking for directions, her speed was about the same as a normal person, so it was easy to catch up.
The security guards whispered to each other, puzzled as to why they were following this woman. It seemed illegal.
But the woman was strange, too; she hadn't turned around once, despite the noise they were making. At the very least, she should have looked back to see what was going on.
"Hey, shouldn't we call the police? After all, your funeral home lost a body." The middle-aged security guard, riding his electric scooter, was still a bit scared, his palms sweating.
"That's not right. The body isn't lost; it's walking right in front of us." Qin Muye said very seriously.
The other security guards, hearing this, felt a chill run down their spines in the wind.
"Old Li, you said the woman in front is the body that the funeral home lost?" one of the security guards asked.
"Don't joke about that; it's scary," another security guard said.
"False, how could a body move? I saw her die and saw her sewn back together from a puddle of flesh, even with a death certificate, but it can't be a body. Bodies don't move, right?" Qin Muye said very maliciously.
Suddenly, the security guard riding next to him squeezed the brake of his electric scooter and turned around to leave, not even bothering to answer Qin Muye.
With someone leading the way, the other security guards also ran off.
Old Li, the middle-aged security guard, was on the verge of tears. Why did you have to be so honest? Couldn't you have lied a bit?
Now that everyone had run away, what were they going to do?
"I think we should call the police in this situation," Old Li's voice was trembling.
"Sure, call the police. I agree with you," Qin Muye said in agreement.
But Old Li lost his nerve. After all, Qin Muye had been contradicting him all along, and now suddenly agreeing with him made him hesitant to speak.
'Wait, he said the dead were a man and a woman.'
Old Li's mind snapped, and he suddenly realized that Qin Muye was a man.
He didn't dare to turn around, fearing that he would see a gruesome corpse behind him.
After all, if the woman could come back to life, why couldn't the man?
What if the so-called staff member had already been killed, and the corpse had taken his credentials and identity?
"Maybe we should wait, go back, and think about it."
"That's not good, we haven't reached her home yet," Qin Muye's voice was calm, but Old Li was panicking.
"I understand now," Old Li was filled with regret. Why did he call for help? Now, there was an unclean presence in front of him and another behind him.
This was a one-way trip.
And the one behind him was clearly more dangerous. The woman in front was dazed and stupid, but the corpse behind him was quite agile, knowing how to threaten and mislead.
To survive, he had to push through. Otherwise, even if the woman in front didn't kill him, the one behind would send him to the morgue.
"Good, I'm a good person and won't kill innocents!" Qin Muye said with a righteous tone.
He was scaring Old Li not because the security guard had mistaken him for a pervert earlier, but simply because he needed someone to drive him. It had nothing to do with being petty.
