Chapter 615: The Target
Chapter 615: The Target
Despite Specialist Zhan's expressionless face, it was uncanny how both Chen Chuan and Instructor Wen could discern a silent "Don't listen to his nonsense" from his demeanor.
A brief silence enveloped the living room.
Mr. Wen smiled and said, "Specialist Zhan, please have some tea."
Specialist Zhan immediately picked up the teacup in front of him, his gaze fixed on the interior of the cup, avoiding eye contact.
Chen Chuan pondered for a moment, carefully folded the wanted notice and set it aside. He rose from his seat and said, "I understand the assessment task, and it's getting late. I should be on my way. Specialist Zhan, where can I find you after this task is completed?"
Specialist Zhan lifted the teacup, appearing to drink, but it shielded half of his face. He hesitated and uncertainly replied, "The hotel?"
Instructor Wen smiled and addressed Chen Chuan, "Supervisor Chen, Specialist Zhan has traveled a long distance to get here and isn't familiar with Yangzhi. I'll arrange accommodation for him, and you can inform me after the task is done. I'll pass the message on to Specialist Zhan." He turned to Specialist Zhan, "Specialist Zhan, how does this sound?"
Specialist Zhan nodded repeatedly.
"Very well, then. I'll take my leave now," Chen Chuan said. After bidding farewell to the two men, he exited Mr. Wen's residence.
Once outside, he took out the wanted notice and examined it once more before putting it away. Then, he strode forward with purpose.
This time, instead of heading to the residential area, he made his way directly to the outer perimeter of the residential zone.
Although this was nominally an assessment, in reality, he had received valuable intelligence about a dangerous individual like Kenwa, who couldn't be left unattended.
The Jinan Province was vast, and locating this person would require the assistance of government agencies.
The Processing Bureau excelled in handling security matters, but they lacked expertise in information and intelligence gathering. Finding this person was beyond their capabilities, so an additional contact with a special department was necessary.
In no time, he exited the residential zone and found a public phone booth on the roadside. He dialed a number.
Within ten minutes, his dedicated motorcade arrived at the intersection, illuminating the road with bright headlights.
The vehicle came to a halt in front of him, and the attendants promptly opened the door.
Chen Chuan settled into the car and retrieved his personal storage device from the in-car cabinet. He donned his device and began searching for information within the stored data of the domain creatures.
Soon enough, he located a communication frequency.
This frequency was provided by the Processing Bureau, and only a few investigation supervisors, besides the deputy director, had access to it. The code was changed monthly.
Chen Chuan instructed the assigned dispatcher to transmit using this frequency.
The dispatcher promptly put on headphones and sent the message.
After a five-minute wait, the dispatcher reported, "Supervisor, the other side has responded."
"Inform them that I've received a tip about a wanted fugitive in Jinan Province, posing a threat to the public safety of Central City and its surrounding areas. I suspect this individual has a critical mission, so I'm invoking the emergency protocol and require their intelligence support."
"Yes, sir."
The dispatcher relayed the message.
This time, after a considerable wait, there was no response from the other end. However, the public phone booth nearby suddenly rang, and it didn't stop.
Upon hearing this, Chen Chuan immediately exited the vehicle and approached the phone booth. He picked up the receiver, and a familiar voice greeted him, "Supervisor Chen."
Recognizing the voice, Chen Chuan responded, "Specialist Cao?"
Specialist Cao confirmed, "It's me, Supervisor Chen. I've verified the information. This person has indeed entered Jinan Province, and my team has been monitoring him. Supervisor Chen, what's the plan for handling this situation?"
Without hesitation, Chen Chuan replied, "On-site execution." He heard a subtle change in the voice from the other end of the line, and then a deep voice said,
Specialist Cao continued, "This is a cunning and arrogant opponent. We were able to detect his movements not because our agents found him, but because he exposed himself. He's likely relying on the impending arrival of the pardon, and his bold and provocative actions aren't surprising given the detailed description of his past offenses on the wanted notice.
Third Limit Fighters often exhibit personality and psychological disorders, more so than the average person.
Yet, amidst their recklessness, they also exhibit a thread of caution. Leaning against the port, if prior arrangements were made, it would be easy for an experienced Third Limit Fighter to escape.
"Specialist Cao, I'll handle this," he said.
Specialist Cao replied, "I'll have my people keep an eye on the target and send updates to you until the Pardon Order arrives. Supervisor Chen, make sure your telegraph operator maintains contact with my people."
Chen acknowledged with a sound of agreement and a word of thanks, then hung up the phone.
He gazed outside, looking towards the port and Yangzhi City, which were about 400 kilometers apart in a straight line. Taking the East National Highway by special vehicle, it would take about half a day to reach there, not including the time needed for the capture. One must also consider that the opponent might not stay in one place for long, so the actual time required could be even longer.
Furthermore, the port wasn't a deserted area. Once they took action, they'd have to consider a series of factors, and most importantly, the presence behind Kenwa.
As for the Pardon Order, he didn't pay it much mind.
What difference would it make if the Pardon Order was issued? As long as he didn't receive it, it was as if it didn't exist, and there was no issue with that in terms of procedure.
He tapped the Ji Pei, sending a signal to Chaoming, who was sleeping at home.
This time, he planned to bring Chaoming along. With the help of the vehicular domain creature, he could use the Ji Pei on Chaoming's head to observe the ground from the sky, which would greatly benefit their operation.
After a while, Chaoming flew out from the residential area and landed in front of him, chirping.
He patted Chaoming, then took it with him as he returned to the vehicle, saying, "Faraway Port."
"Yes!"
The motorcade started and left Yangzhi City. Half an hour later, they were on the East National Highway, heading towards Faraway Port. By the time they approached, it was already the next day's noon.
The security team members, including Yu Wan, were in good condition due to taking turns resting.
However, they were all implanted with advanced implants, and even without rest, they could maintain combat readiness for several days and nights through emergency drug injections.
Chen Chuan opened the car door, and Chaoming flapped its wings loudly before flying out of the car and into the sky in the blink of an eye. It then flew towards the port ahead.
At the same time, in the container yard of Faraway Port, there were about twenty armed militants guarding an area. Beyond them was the dock loading and unloading area, and further out, the sea was clearly visible through the gaps in the containers.
Kenwa was currently sitting in the middle of an open area, gnawing on a half-cooked lamb leg.
His muscles were solid and robust, especially his thick arms. He had prominent cheekbones, making his face look broader, but his nose was large and straight, a typical feature of the First People. His skin was rough, and his black, hard hair was tied back. His face was painted, giving him a wild and rugged appearance.
He wore a full-body combat suit, and around his body were things that looked like wriggling tendons. At first glance, they seemed to be moving.
These were external implants, a technology from the Linax Federation. They could attach to a fighter's body and, during combat, partially replace the function of altered tissue, providing the user with smoother movements and greater strength.
The lamb leg was torn by his hard teeth, pulling off a chunk of bloody meat and sinew. He chewed it into a pulp in just a few bites and swallowed it.
Usually, fighters only needed nutritional paste, but occasionally, they'd indulge in a good meal. However, he particularly enjoyed bloody food. He couldn't remember when this preference started, perhaps after coming into contact with that thing? But he didn't care. As long as it gave him strength, he didn't mind these changes.
At that moment, he suddenly paused, his gaze moving upwards to the sky, where he saw a black dot appear. It was probably a bird.
As a fighter, he could clearly see the bird's magnificent feathers. He had never seen such a bird before. Was it a special species from Dashi? Or...
Regardless, he didn't like the feeling he got from it, so he quickly finished the lamb leg, threw the remaining bone to the ground, and signaled to one of the gunmen nearby to hand over his gun. The gunman immediately removed the long gun from his back and passed it to him.
He took it, checked it, released the safety, and aimed it at the sky, his finger on the trigger.
After aiming for a while, he moved his finger and pulled the trigger.
