Chapter 615: I Want to Report Dumbledore
Chapter 615: I Want to Report Dumbledore
An unknown amount of time passed, and Umbridge's office gradually fell silent, except for the scratching of a quill on parchment. Sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating a stack of parchment on the desk.
Kyle wrote the sentence over and over, adding ink several times, and finally finished the required five hundred repetitions around noon.
"What a tiring task..." He rubbed his slightly sore wrists. The last time he had written so much was on the last day of the Thanksgiving holiday break when he had pulled an all-nighter to finish his Potions homework.
Kyle stood up and approached Umbridge, who had been gritting her teeth and silently glaring at him for the past hour due to the pain. Although the wound on the back of her hand had healed, the skin there was still red, like freshly healed flesh.
"I've finished, Professor," Kyle said, holding up a thick stack of parchments. "See, not too much and not too little, exactly five hundred repetitions."
Umbridge remained silent, continuing to stare malevolently at Kyle. She had figured it out—this was Hogwarts, and Kyle wouldn't dare kill her or keep her locked up here forever. But when the time came... she would make him pay double for this humiliation.
"Professor, I bet you're thinking that I don't dare kill you," Kyle said with a smile. "You're right, I don't dare. After all, we are in Hogwarts. However, whether you remember what happened here later is another matter entirely."
Kyle drew his wand and pointed it at Umbridge's head, ignoring her terrified gaze.
"What... what are you doing?! I'm the Senior Undersecretary of the Ministry of Magic!" Umbridge shouted.
"I know, you mentioned that earlier," Kyle arched an eyebrow. "That's why I can't let you cause me any more trouble. A certain professor... also a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, taught me a very useful little trick that's perfect for situations like this."
"Oh, and by the way, I think I made a mistake about one thing." Kyle pointed to the "Devil's Snare" surrounding her. "Devil's Snare is characterized by needle-sharp round spines, but these triangular, saw-toothed spines belong to the Venomous Tentacula.
"This plant has mild toxicity and will only make you uncomfortable for a while. If you had gathered the courage to rush out and pick up your wand from the floor, you might have been able to escape. After all, I was focusing entirely on writing that sentence and wouldn't have noticed anything else."
"Venomous Tentacula... not Devil's Snare?" Umbridge looked completely flustered. "You lied to me..."
"Obliviate!"
In an instant, Umbridge's malevolent gaze turned blank and confused.
Kyle took the opportunity to wave his wand. The shards on the floor reassembled themselves and returned to the wall, along with the overturned desk and shattered vase, which all returned to their original positions.
Kyle waved his wand again, targeting the fixed axis of the door lock and the Silencing Charms in the room. Finally, he quickly stuffed the Venomous Tentacula back into the box, returning the office to its original state as if nothing had happened.
Oh, and one more important thing.
Kyle pointed his wand at the back of Umbridge's hand, and the conspicuous red scar disappeared. However, Kyle hadn't actually healed the wound; injuries caused by Dark magic items were not so easily cured. He had simply used a Transfiguration spell to cover up the scar. With his current skill in Transfiguration, the disguise would last until the end of the term without the need for a counter-spell.
...
At that moment, Umbridge also regained consciousness. Her eyes were full of confusion as she looked at Kyle, but the next second, confusion turned into anger.
"Get out! Why are you entering my office without knocking?" she demanded.
"Sorry, Professor," Kyle said with a smile. "I did knock, but you seemed to have dozed off and didn't hear me."
"I dozed off?" Umbridge looked perplexed.
However, she did feel a bit groggy, as if she hadn't fully woken up yet.
Umbridge raised her hand to rub her forehead, but the sudden pain on the back of her hand made her scream involuntarily. But when she looked down, she couldn't see any sign of injury.
"Professor, are you alright?" Kyle asked.
"It's none of your business," Umbridge said instinctively, but then she switched to her usual saccharine tone. "I mean, of course, I'm fine... but you're late."
She walked over to the armchair and sat down, glancing at the time. "According to our agreement, your detention was supposed to start at eight o'clock, but now it's been over three hours, so your punishment will have to be doubled."
As she spoke, she rubbed the back of her hand again.
"That's reasonable, Professor," Kyle said. "However, I think I need to explain to you why I did what I did in class. There was a reason for it."
"What reason?" Umbridge asked.
"I needed an opportunity to speak with you privately, and detention provided a perfect excuse.
In an instant, Umbridge shot up from her chair, but she knocked her hand on the armrest, causing another stab of pain.
However, she quickly pushed the pain aside.
"Don't joke with me, you can't fool me."
She feigned nonchalance and said, "Everyone knows that Dumbledore only wants to be the headmaster of Hogwarts. You can't avoid punishment by making up excuses."
"That was before, Professor," Kyle said, "People can change. You probably don't know this, but during the holiday break, Dumbledore held a secret meeting at the Leaky Cauldron. The purpose of the meeting was to have others nominate him to replace Cornelius Fudge as the new Minister of Magic."
Umbridge's expression gradually turned serious.
She was, of course, aware of this. With so many foreigners arriving in Britain, there was no way it could be hidden from the Ministry of Magic. Fudge had always wanted to know what was discussed during that meeting, but despite the efforts of the Aurors and Hit Wizards, they never found any answers.
One of the reasons for her visit to Hogwarts was to investigate what transpired during that meeting.
She had intended to start her inquiry with the professors, but Kyle had given her an unexpected surprise.
"How do you know about this?" Umbridge asked.
"Because I was there." Kyle said proudly, "Dumbledore trusts me."
"If that's the case, then why are you telling me?" Umbridge asked, suspicion lacing her tone.
"Because I believe that only Minister Cornelius Fudge is the best choice for Minister of Magic." Kyle blurted out.
Umbridge stared at Kyle intently, and after a long moment, she suddenly laughed:
"I won't be fooled by your clumsy tricks."
"If you don't believe me, that's fine." Kyle shrugged nonchalantly and turned to walk towards the door, adding as he walked, "It's a shame, though. If Dumbledore becomes Minister, who knows how many people will be replaced. The wizarding world can't afford such turmoil..."
One step, two steps...
Just as Kyle opened the door and was about to leave the office, Umbridge's voice suddenly called out from behind him.
"Wait!"
She hurried over and closed the door.
"Tell me everything that was discussed at the meeting. If you do, I'll let you off the hook for this detention."
"I've told you all that I can." Kyle shook his head, "As for the details, I'm sorry, but I can only tell Minister Fudge himself.
"You know, for someone who wants to work for the Ministry of Magic like me, this would be a huge achievement,"
Somehow, upon hearing Kyle's words, the wariness in Umbridge's eyes lessened considerably, and her gaze turned appraising.
"Are you worried that I'll steal your glory?"
"I'm sure you wouldn't do that." Kyle said with a smile, "But this is a gift I want to give to Minister Fudge, and as a gift, it should be delivered personally, don't you think?
"Besides, I'm only in my sixth year. Even if I have this achievement, it won't help me much... maybe just a little bit of insignificant help in two years' time when I graduate."
Umbridge's eyes lit up as she almost forgot that Kyle was still a student.
"If you dare to lie to me..."
"I just want to maintain stability in the wizarding world, Professor." Kyle said.
"A wise choice." Umbridge said softly, "I'll pass on the message to the Minister. If what you say is true, I guarantee that you'll be able to join the Ministry of Magic as soon as you graduate, and you'll be placed in the best department—how about the Minister's office?"
A spark of excitement flashed in Kyle's eyes, but it quickly faded.
Umbridge narrowed her eyes.
"So, Professor, about my detention today..."
"Of course, you don't need to serve it." Umbridge said, "It's a reward for providing this valuable information."
Kyle left the office, but soon returned.
Umbridge was sitting behind her desk, seemingly about to write a letter, and she looked up subconsciously at the sound of the door.
"Kyle?"
Her voice held a touch of warmth it had lacked before, "Is there something else?"
"There is one small matter..."
"Go ahead, don't hesitate."
"Well, you also deducted twenty points from me in class yesterday."
Kyle looked a little embarrassed, "I know it might be a bit much to ask, but as you know, I had to do that to avoid arousing Dumbledore's suspicion.
"So, could you please give those twenty points back... it's still the beginning of the term, and Hufflepuff is already in second-to-last place."
"You're right, this is Hogwarts, and we should indeed be more cautious." Umbridge looked a little disappointed but eventually nodded, "Maintaining the honor of your house is only natural, and your request is not excessive at all.
"So... because of your honesty and bravery, Hufflepuff gains fifty points... no, make it twenty points."
