Chapter 612: The Truth
Chapter 612: The Truth
"How could they say such things about Sirius?"
During lunch, as Kyle passed by the staircase, he overheard Harry angrily shouting at Professor McGonagall.
"Intentionally harming students and suspected Death Eater? How is that possible? He's a member of the Order of the Phoenix..."
"Potter!" Professor McGonagall interrupted him sternly. "This is a decision made by the Ministry of Magic, and we must cooperate."
"But..." Harry knew he had said the wrong thing, but he was too anxious.
He couldn't accept the fact that Sirius had been taken away mysteriously and linked to the Death Eaters.
"But Professor, hasn't he already been proven innocent?" Harry asked.
Professor McGonagall's lips twitched, and after a moment of silence, she said, "All I can tell you is that things are not as you think... In any case, Headmaster Dumbledore will handle this matter. You just need to focus on preparing for your O.W.L. exams this year."
Harry wanted to ask more questions, but Professor McGonagall walked away.
Frustrated, Harry banged his fist on the staircase railing, while Ron and Hermione beside him looked on with concern.
Kyle's expression changed slightly. It seemed that there was more to Sirius being taken away than met the eye...
Driven by curiosity, he decided to seek out Dumbledore for answers.
Later that afternoon, after the last class of Magical History, Kyle made his way to the eighth floor and stood before the stone statue of the gargoyle.
"Acid Pops..."
"Pepper Imps..."
"Sugar Quills!"
On the third try, the statue moved, stepping aside to reveal a passage behind it.
The password for the headmaster's office wasn't difficult to guess; it was usually one of Honeyduke's bestselling or newest products.
As Kyle pushed open the oak door and entered the office, he found Dumbledore sitting at his desk, writing a letter.
Hearing the door, Dumbledore looked up, "I thought you would come to see me during lunch."
Dumbledore put down his quill, "Is it about Sirius?"
"Yes," Kyle said as he walked over to Fawkes and stroked the feathers on his neck.
"What really happened? Surely it's not just because a student was injured in his Dueling class."
"That is one reason," Dumbledore said, "Some parents wrote to me last year, complaining that his teaching methods were too extreme."
"But there's another, more significant reason..." Dumbledore paused before continuing, "I received news that Peter Pettigrew is dead, and there were sightings of a large black dog near Azkaban."
"Peter Pettigrew is dead?" Kyle exclaimed in disbelief, "Could it be a false report?"
"No," Dumbledore shook his head, "I've confirmed it was indeed Pettigrew."
"When did this happen?"
"A week ago," Dumbledore said.
"Then it definitely wasn't Sirius," Kyle stated confidently, "School had already started by then, and he's been here the whole time.
Although he may be the one who wants to kill Peter Pettigrew the most, he wouldn't risk doing it with Harry here."
"I think the same, but the Ministry doesn't believe it. They insist that I'm helping Sirius cover up his actions."
Dumbledore folded the parchment in his hands and placed it into an envelope.
"What about the Death Eater business, then?" Kyle asked, "I heard that Sirius was taken away because he was suspected of being involved with the Death Eaters."
"I'm not sure about that," Dumbledore said, "Perhaps Pettigrew said something before he died that led to the misunderstanding."
He placed the letter on the desk, and Fawkes nudged Kyle with his head before grabbing the letter and flying out the window.
"Oh, and one more thing," Dumbledore suddenly spoke up. "Although your actions in the Great Hall were very satisfying, I must remind you that this new professor, Umbridge, is not as generous as the others."
"Professor McGonagall shares the same thought. She believes that you should be extra cautious and not give her any opportunity to catch you off guard."
"Don't worry, I can handle her," Kyle replied, not seeming too concerned about Dumbledore's warning.
"But speaking of which..." He glanced at Dumbledore. "Professor, about what we discussed at the Hog's Head... You haven't forgotten, have you?"
"Yes... I haven't forgotten," Dumbledore replied, his fingers twitching slightly as he spoke with a hint of reluctance. "In fact, I recently met with Amelia, as well as Barty, Arthur, your father, Chris, and Doge at the Leaky Cauldron a couple of days ago."
"Then we don't have to worry," Kyle said.
Just as he was about to leave for the Great Hall to have dinner, he suddenly remembered something else and turned to ask, "Professor, can you tell me about your plan?"
"What?" Dumbledore seemed puzzled.
"The plan about you getting dismissed by Wizenagamot, manipulating Fudge, and the mysterious person," Kyle explained. "I noticed that there was a huge difference in the number of votes.
"Of course, if it's inconvenient, then forget I asked."
"This..."
"There are some things you may not understand..." Dumbledore suddenly became hesitant, his tone carrying a hint of awkwardness.
"Whether it's the Wizenagamot or the International Confederation of Wizards meetings, it's impossible to get everyone to attend.
"For example, a master potion maker would never leave his room when brewing certain precious potions, and the same goes for some magical experiments."
"So, you really were dismissed?"
"Cough, it's not exactly like that," Dumbledore fiddled with the silverware on the table. "There are some benefits... Those positions took up a lot of my time, and now that I'm relieved of those burdens, I can focus on dealing with the most pressing matters at hand."
"Okay, I understand," Kyle said as he turned and pulled open the oak door. "Then, goodbye, Professor."
"The password for next week is Lemon Sherbets. You won't need to guess it if you come again," Dumbledore said. "Good luck to you."
"And to you, Professor," Kyle replied.
After leaving the headmaster's office, Kyle headed directly to the Great Hall.
Dinner was about to start, and the hall was filled with students.
Kona had saved a seat for him, and as Kyle sat down, he overheard Cedric and Michael discussing the recruitment for the Quidditch team.
The team had been short one player last year, and with two graduates this year, they needed to recruit three new players.
They needed a Keeper, a Chaser, and a Beater.
"The time is Saturday at 9 a.m.," Cedric said. "Since we have quite a few new members joining, I hope you can all come and see if the newcomers can work well with the rest of the team."
"I'm available," Michael replied. "It would be best if we could get a high-year Beater. The second-year newcomers are too young and lack the strength."
Kyle shrugged indifferently. He didn't have any particular requirements for his new teammates as long as they didn't hold the team back.
"It will definitely be fine," Cedric said expectantly. "I really wish the Quidditch matches would start soon. With Kyle's Firebolt this year, even if we have more newcomers, the other houses won't be a match for us."
