Chapter 610: Painful Memories
Chapter 610: Painful Memories
Ivan, lost in thought, instinctively looked up.
A familiar figure stood at the end of the corridor by the window, her hand slightly raised. Several blue birds perched on her forearm, their melodious chirping blending together like a symphony.
"Luna? What are you doing here?" Ivan walked over and greeted her.
"I didn't have any classes, so I was just wandering around the castle..." Luna said dreamily, giving a gentle shake of her wrist. The blue birds took flight, disappearing into the sky.
After that, Luna turned her head, her bright eyes fixing on Ivan. She smiled and said, "Congratulations on becoming the Champion!"
"Thanks, I received your congratulations that night!" Ivan laughed, remembering how Luna had been the first to clap and cheer when Dumbledore announced the Champion Candidates.
"Um... would our Hogwarts Champion like to take a walk with me?" Luna noticed that Ivan seemed to have something on his mind and suggested it.
Ivan readily agreed, thinking Luna might be a good companion.
The two of them wandered around the castle without a specific destination, letting their steps take them wherever they would. They avoided talking about their troubles and instead shared some amusing stories from the start of the school year.
Ivan hadn't felt this relaxed in a long time. The constant stream of problems had been weighing heavily on him.
However, remembering his purpose, he steered Luna toward a more secluded area to avoid being overheard.
"Can you tell me now?" Luna looked around, seeing no one else nearby, and asked curiously.
"It's hard to imagine what could stump you..." Luna added.
"Don't flatter me. You know as well as I do that there have been plenty of troubles over the years that could have stumped me," Ivan said with a helpless shrug.
"But you always manage to solve them, don't you?" Luna said with a light laugh.
"That's true, although sometimes the results aren't perfect..." Ivan regained some confidence but was still troubled by recent events. After a moment's thought, he explained that he needed to practice Legilimency and was looking for a helper.
"Legilimency? The spell that can read memories, right?" Luna mused, recalling Ivan's earlier explanation.
"Yes, so during practice, I'll see some of your past memories... I hope you don't mind?" Ivan asked cautiously.
He thought Hermione had avoided him because of this and was worried Luna might refuse.
To his surprise, the young witch agreed right away, her response quick and decisive.
"We're friends, aren't we? If it helps you!" Luna said lightly, as if having her memories read wouldn't bother her at all.
"Also, when can we start?" she asked.
"Right now, right here!" Ivan looked around; they had reached the eighth floor of the castle, a place rarely visited by anyone.
Luna nodded, turned to face Ivan, and waited for him to cast the spell.
"Legilimency~" Ivan maintained eye contact, pointed his wand at Luna's forehead, and spoke the incantation.
The ethereal spell connected their minds, and scenes from the past began to flash through his thoughts.
Ivan was certain that this was the easiest time he had ever cast a spell. Luna offered almost no resistance to his probing, allowing him to see the scene she had hidden deep in her heart.
It was a particularly desolate green field, with a peculiar-looking house standing alone nearby. At first glance, it resembled a massive black cylinder, covered in branches and vines, with billowing white steam continuously spewing from the top.
"This is my home... Lovegood Manor."
A ethereal voice suddenly came from behind, startling Ivan. He turned around abruptly to find Luna standing right behind him.
"You can appear in your own memories?" Ivan asked, his voice filled with surprise and confusion.
"Shouldn't I be here?" Luna said, puzzled, assuming that this was how Ivan's magic worked.
Ivan was baffled. Since learning Legilimency, this was the first time he had encountered such a situation.
"Let's go inside!" Luna didn't seem to want to delve deeper into the matter. She took Ivan's hand and led him up the steps toward the open door.
Ivan temporarily set aside his questions and followed Luna into the manor.
Unlike the ancient and dilapidated appearance from the outside, the interior of the manor was spacious and clean, not at all as cluttered as it appeared in the original timeline.
However, the overall decor was rather peculiar. Everything was round—tables, chairs, rooms, and even the kitchen. The walls were adorned with various cut-out newspaper articles, including a few family photos and numerous reports on rare magical creatures.
Ivan surveyed his surroundings and then followed Luna to a workshop.
"That's me," Luna said, pointing to a small figure sitting in a round chair, her expression tinged with nostalgia.
Ivan followed Luna's gaze and saw a golden-haired little girl, about eight or nine years old, pestering a male wizard in his thirties with endless questions, far from the quiet demeanor she had now.
"This is my father, Xenophilius Lovegood," Luna added, pointing to the wizard and explaining.
Ivan immediately understood.
The younger Xenophilius was quite handsome and well-dressed. However, from the manuscripts on the table and his conversation with young Luna, it was clear that he had already been fascinated by peculiar and unusual things.
In the workshop, besides the father and daughter, there was another witch deeply engrossed in her research. Luna didn't introduce her, but Ivan guessed it must be Luna's mother.
Judging by her appearance, she was a very beautiful witch in her early thirties, no wonder she had given birth to a girl as ethereal as Luna.
"She is my mother..." Luna said softly, confirming Ivan's guess.
At that moment, the witch called out to young Luna and stood up, preparing to leave.
As they passed by, Luna reached out, seemingly trying to stop her, but her hand passed right through the witch's body.
The outcome was already decided; everything here existed only in her memory...
Ivan looked at Luna apologetically, understanding that his Legilimency had made her relive one of her most painful memories.
However, before Ivan could apologize, Luna shook her head, stopping him. Then she said, "Let's go outside!"
