Chapter 61: The Spirit Talisman Pavilion
Chapter 61: The Spirit Talisman Pavilion
He Changyou looked at Chu Ning with a bewildered expression. If it weren't for the few people still crafting talismans, he would have immediately gone over to inspect Chu Ning.
However, soon enough, the remaining few finished their last talisman.
He Changyou didn't even wait a moment before he appeared beside Chu Ning.
"You successfully crafted five talismans?"
As He Changyou moved, his voice rang out in the dojo.
Instantly, everyone's gaze turned towards Chu Ning, their eyes filled with astonishment.
Everyone in the dojo had worked with the Wood Escape Talisman over the past five days and knew how difficult it was to learn from scratch and improve their success rate.
Even a success rate of four or three out of ten would be surprising.
Yet, He Changyou claimed that Chu Ning had achieved a success rate of five out of ten.
How could they not be shocked!
Chu Ning sighed inwardly. After successfully crafting the last talisman, he had realized that he would once again attract attention.
But he hadn't expected even He Changyou to react so strongly.
Thoughts flashed through his mind, and the next moment, the startled expression on Chu Ning's face turned into one of delight.
"I..."
Chu Ning put on a show of extreme excitement.
"The second and third talismans were successful, and I felt like I was in a great state. I didn't expect to succeed with the next three as well."
Hearing Chu Ning's words, the dojo erupted in an uproar.
"This kid's luck is incredible!"
"Indeed, after two consecutive successes, his entire mentality changed."
"I usually succeed with three out of ten, but because I failed the first three consecutively, I was affected, and only managed to succeed with two in the end."
...
Amidst the discussions, He Changyou nodded slightly, and his voice echoed throughout the dojo.
"Luck and mentality are important factors in a cultivator's success. The rules are the same for everyone.
First place is first place; there's no such thing as luck."
After speaking, He Changyou returned the five talismans to Chu Ning and flashed back to the front.
"Now, I announce the results of the talisman crafting competition. First place goes to Chu Ning, with a success rate of five out of ten.
Second place is Xie Cai Tian, with a success rate of four out of ten..."
He Changyou recited ten names in succession. The last three people had a success rate of two out of ten.
Out of the remaining seventeen people, ten had only succeeded in crafting one talisman, and seven had not even succeeded once.
Apparently, for most of the group who were not yet proficient in crafting talismans, the environment and the pressure of the competition had affected their performance.
That was why the gazes directed at Chu Ning held a hint of jealousy.
Even though He Changyou had just said that luck was also a part of one's ability, most people still believed that Chu Ning had gotten lucky.
The five people who had been promoted from District Ding exchanged glances, their eyes filled with complex emotions.
They had all been promoted from District Ding together, and Chu Ning had the lowest cultivation base among them.
However, if Chu Ning learned how to craft talismans, his cultivation resources might far surpass theirs in the future.
He Changyou didn't give the people in the dojo much time to display their complex emotions. After announcing the top ten, he waved his hand.
"You ten, follow me to the Spirit Talisman Pavilion."
Thus, under the envious gazes of the crowd, Chu Ning and the others followed He Changyou out of the dojo and headed towards the outer gate.
As Chu Ning and his group entered the outer gate, they saw Zhuang Yunde walking out from inside.
"Executor He!"
Zhuang Yunde first bowed respectfully to He Changyou and then swept his gaze over the people behind him.
When his eyes landed on Chu Ning, he paused slightly.
With so many people around, it wasn't appropriate for Chu Ning to engage in private conversation.
He Changyou nodded as well, acknowledging Zhuang Yunde, before leading Chu Ning and the others forward.
Soon, they arrived at a grand hall.
While Chu Ning had been to the outer gate before, he had only come to see Zhuang Yunde and Mu Ling, and had never ventured further into the sect.
He had not even visited the Hundred Arts Hall, let alone the Spirit Talisman Pavilion.
It was only after some time in the sect that he learned of its existence.
Despite its name, the Hundred Arts Hall did not encompass all arts. Arts such as pill refining, talisman making, and formation setting had their own separate halls.
There was the Pill Refining Hall, the Artifact Refining Hall, and the Spirit Talisman Pavilion for talisman crafting.
He Changyou led the group to the Spirit Talisman Pavilion, a five-story tower.
Without giving Chu Ning and the others much time to admire the building from the outside, he brought them directly inside.
"Brother Liao!"
He Changyou bowed to a middle-aged Confucian scholar who was engrossed in a book in the main hall.
The scholar didn't seem to be a stickler for formalities, as his Confucian robe was casually draped over him, giving him a somewhat uncultured appearance.
Upon seeing He Changyou, he shifted his gaze from the book to the group behind him.
"Are these the disciples that the Hundred Arts Hall has selected for talisman crafting?" he asked.
"These are the disciples chosen by the Spirit Plant Room who have shown potential in talisman crafting," He Changyou nodded.
Turning to Chu Ning and the others, he introduced, "This is Liao Yunming, the Executor of the Spirit Talisman Pavilion. Come, pay your respects."
Hearing He Changyou's words, Chu Ning and the others stepped forward and bowed.
After receiving their greetings, Liao Yunming didn't address them directly but turned back to He Changyou and asked, "What kind of talismans did they compete with, and what is their talent like?"
"They competed with the Wood Escape Talisman, and their talent is quite good," He Changyou replied with a smile.
"In just five days, these three have achieved a success rate of 20%.
These five have a success rate of 30%, and this one, Xie Cai Tian, has a success rate of 40%."
Liao Yunming's gaze swept over the group noncommittally, only pausing slightly when he heard that Xie Cai Tian had a 40% success rate.
Finally, he looked at Chu Ning with a hint of confusion, clearly curious as to why He Changyou hadn't introduced him yet.
"I've also found an exceptional talent in talisman crafting," He Changyou said proudly, pointing at Chu Ning.
"Chu Ning, in five days, has achieved a success rate of 50% with the Wood Escape Talisman."
"Fifty percent?" Liao Yunming's eyes widened in surprise, and he even set down the book he had been holding.
"Are you joking? Has he had any prior experience with talisman crafting?"
He Changyou shook his head and laughed, "Do you think I would joke about this? Our disciple has only been in the sect for a little over a year.
He was in District Ding, tending to plants, and only recently advanced to District Bing.
I've already looked into it, and while he has learned the art of making talisman paper, he has never crafted a talisman before."
Liao Yunming stood up at this point, his eyes fixed on Chu Ning as he muttered, "Fifty percent success rate in such a short time... Even in my Spirit Talisman Pavilion, few have such talent."
After muttering to himself, Liao Yunming suddenly turned to a young man in the corner of the hall and said, "Tan Zhang, take these nine disciples from the Spirit Plant Room to choose some basic talisman techniques.
I want to observe this nephew's talisman crafting. If his talent is indeed that exceptional..."
Liao Yunming left the sentence hanging, but his tone clearly indicated that he intended to treat Chu Ning differently from the others.
