Chapter 609: Heartache
Chapter 609: Heartache
Nie Zan, unfamiliar with the laws of the mainland, asked, "What would be the consequences if the allegations of trafficking are substantiated?"
Su Heyuan fell silent before replying, "If the evidence is conclusive, my uncle won't be able to intervene. A prison sentence is likely."
If the matter had been suppressed immediately, it wouldn't have been an issue. Now, several individuals had been interrogated, and the testimonies heavily implicated Lu Hongjun. Xie Kaixiao wouldn't be able to help anymore.
After a moment of silence, Nie Zan asked, "Based on your speculation, how many years might he be sentenced to?"
"It depends on the amount involved," Su Heyuan replied. "If it's a large sum, the sentence will be severe. If the amount is not significant, compensating for the loss might lead to a more lenient sentence."
"I understand," Nie Zan said with a nod.
Meanwhile, in the interrogation room, Guo Qingqing held a notebook and looked at Lu Hongjun with a mocking expression. "You claim you didn't traffic cultural relics, but Li Sangyu clearly recorded here that he gave you money in exchange for antiques."
She then read aloud from the notebook, "This Sending Child Guanyin is truly exquisite, translucent, and snowy white. The seller said it was carved from a whole piece of mutton fat jade by the most skilled craftsman at the time. I really want to keep such a fine piece as a family heirloom, but unfortunately, I already promised Mr. Lu that I could only send it away."
Lu Hongjun was furious, cursing Li Sangyu in his heart for being a fool and recording the matter of the Sending Child Guanyin. This could ruin him. The angrier he became, the more his blood boiled.
Guo Qingqing noticed his expression and closed the notebook. "Now that the evidence is conclusive, your denials are useless, Lu Hongjun. Confess and cooperate, and if you bring Lu Jiaxin back and retrieve the national treasure, we can be lenient."
"Puh—"
Lu Hongjun spat out a mouthful of blood, his vision darkening as he slumped forward. Fortunately, the prisoners were seated on sturdy wooden chairs, and he only hit his head, forming a large bump, without falling to the ground.
Guo Qingqing angrily cursed, "Lu Hongjun, don't you dare pretend to be dead..."
Among the interrogators, the eldest suddenly paled. "He's fainted. We must send him to the hospital immediately. If something happens to him, we'll all be in trouble."
At the hospital, the doctors examined Lu Hongjun and found his pupils dilated and unresponsive. He was immediately sent to the emergency room for treatment.
Far away in Bali, Lu Jiaxin was enjoying the sea breeze and chatting with Zong Shimen on the beach, feeling utterly relaxed. Suddenly, she felt a piercing pain in her heart.
Qian Xiao Xiao was the first to notice something amiss. "Sister Jiaxin, what's wrong?"
The pain was so intense that Lu Jiaxin couldn't speak.
Yan Yijun made the quick decision to send her to the hospital. In the car, Lu Jiaxin curled up in pain, beads of sweat forming on her forehead due to the intensity of the agony.
Zong Shimen's heart ached for her, and tears came to her eyes. Lu Jiaxin had been fine just a moment ago, and now this sudden turn of events was alarming. But now was not the time for crying. She steeled herself and said, "Jiaxin, hold on a little longer. We're almost at the hospital. You'll be fine once we get there."
They arrived at the hospital soon after.
The doctor asked Zong Shimen if the patient had experienced similar episodes in the past.
Qian Xiao Xiao replied confidently, "She's never had anything like this before. However, she was injured six years ago. She hit her head and lost a lot of blood, causing her to pass out. It took a year for her to recover."
She worried that this might be a lingering illness from the injury, but it was just her speculation. The actual cause would only be known after the examination.
What surprised everyone was that the test results showed everything to be normal, and by then, Lu Jiaxin's pain had also subsided. However, exhausted from the ordeal, she soon fell asleep.
Zong Shimen stayed by Lu Jiaxin's bedside, while Qian Xiaoxiao stepped out to call Nie Zan. "Yes, Sister Jiaxin suddenly had a sharp pain in her heart, so severe that she almost passed out. Nothing like this has ever happened before. The doctors ran a series of tests, but they found no issues."
Qian Xiaoxiao believed the doctors here were incompetent, and decided to take Lu Jiaxin to a better hospital for another check-up once she woke up.
Nie Zan was taken aback and asked, "When did Jiaxin start having the chest pain?"
Qian Xiaoxiao glanced at her watch and replied, "I checked my watch when we got in the car. It started about seventy minutes ago."
Nie Zan sighed and said, "About an hour ago, I received a call from Su Heyuan. My father-in-law has hemorrhaged and lost consciousness. He's currently in the hospital."
"What?" Qian Xiaoxiao exclaimed.
Nie Zan repeated himself, "If Jiaxin's check-up shows no issues, it's possible that she sensed her father-in-law's life is in danger."
Qian Xiaoxiao thought it was impossible. Although Sister Jiaxin had no love for Lu Hongjun, she stopped herself from saying it out loud. After all, Lu Hongjun had raised her for over a decade, spoiling her with a thousand affections. Now that he was on the brink of death, it was normal for her to sense it.
After a moment of thought, Qian Xiaoxiao asked Miao Na to stay with Lu Jiaxin and called Zong Shimen out of the room. She then informed everyone about Lu Hongjun's situation.
Qian Xiaoxiao shared her thoughts, "Let's take Sister Jiaxin to a better hospital for a full check-up first. If there are no issues, we'll tell her about Lu Hongjun."
She was worried that Lu Jiaxin would insist on rushing back, and she feared what might happen if the chest pain struck again during the flight.
Yan Yijun, as an atheist, believed that whether they went for another check-up or returned home, the decision should be left to Jiaxin. As bodyguards, their responsibility was to ensure their client's safety and carry out their instructions, not to make decisions on their behalf.
Zong Shimen felt that Lu Jiaxin's sudden chest pain was definitely due to Lu Hongjun's critical condition. She said, "You guys go book the tickets now for the earliest flight. When Jiaxin wakes up and learns about this, she'll definitely want to go back."
Even with their past conflicts, he was still her father, and she would want to return for the sake of her reputation if nothing else. As for further check-ups, Zong Shimen didn't think it was necessary.
After all, Jiaxin had always been in good health and underwent regular check-ups every six months. If there were any issues, they would have been detected already; it was too much of a coincidence that she experienced chest pain just as Lu Hongjun's life hung in the balance.
Qian Xiaoxiao fell silent after hearing Zong Shimen's analysis.
Over an hour later, Lu Jiaxin woke up and felt a little better. She asked with lingering fear, "Sister Shimen, what did the doctors say?"
Zong Shimen shared the test results with her, "The tests show everything is normal. However, while Xiao Xiao was on the phone with Nie Zan, he mentioned that Lu Hongjun hemorrhaged and lost consciousness. He's in the hospital now, and the timing coincides with when you started feeling the chest pain."
Lu Jiaxin was stunned for a moment before murmuring, "So, I felt the pain in my heart because Lu Hongjun is fighting for his life in the hospital?"
Zong Shimen nodded, "The bond between father and daughter is strong. With your father in such a critical state, you sensed it and that's why you had the chest pain."
Lu Jiaxin covered her chest. Even if Lu Hongjun died in front of her, she wouldn't feel sad, but the timing was just too coincidental. Could it be due to the residual emotional imprint from her original body? Regardless of the reason, now that she knew Lu Hongjun's life was in danger, she had to rush back.
"Have you booked the tickets?"
Zong Shimen nodded, "Yes, there are no direct flights to Sichuan City, so we'll have to fly to Singapore first and then transfer to Sichuan City from there."
Lu Jiaxin checked her watch and stood up, "Let's go to the airport."
