Chapter 609: A New Path
Chapter 609: A New Path
Chen Chuancai sat down and suddenly, a dark shadow darted past them at incredible speed. He glanced at it and recognized it as a bug from the Convergence Ground.
As he observed, the bug's swiftness seemed to slow down, revealing every detail of its body. He noticed that this bug appeared slightly different from those he had seen before, as if it had several strands of deep red blood stems on its body.
With a snap, Wei Dong grabbed the bug and crushed it in his palm. Even as he opened his hand, the grotesque mouthparts and twisted limbs were still visible, along with thick, purplish-red blood dripping down. Surprisingly, the tissue inside was more abundant than expected.
Wu Han, disgusted, tossed over a tissue box, saying, "These bugs are everywhere lately. The Linaksa Federation is really going overboard."
Wei Dong wiped his hands with a tissue and suddenly said, "This bug is different from the others."
Wu Han, puzzled, replied, "They're all bugs. What's so different about it?"
Chen Chuan knew the difference, as Wei Dong had an exceptional eye for detail, and most people wouldn't notice the subtle distinctions.
At that moment, not far from them, a man at a nearby table also snapped and killed a bug. As he wiped his hands, he cursed, "Damn, these things are everywhere lately. The other day, I was about to go out for some fun, and I found a dead dog lying in front of my door. I kicked it aside, and it burst open right in front of me, filled with little bugs. They were in my mouth, nose, and even my eyes. I must have swallowed quite a few. Ugh, the taste was so disgusting! I still feel sick thinking about it!"
The group dining nearby froze, subtly moving away. One person couldn't help but ask, "Hey, buddy, are you okay?"
The man nonchalantly replied, "What's there to be afraid of? I immediately chugged a bottle of bug spray, and for the next few days, I smelled like bug spray everywhere, even in my veins."
The group breathed a sigh of relief, realizing that this man likely had modified internal organs and artificial blood vessels, allowing him to withstand such an ordeal.
At that moment, a waiter approached them, apologizing repeatedly. He placed a small potted plant on the table next to Chen Chuan and his companions and introduced it, saying, "Gentlemen, this plant is very effective against bugs. One pot can last for over an hour. Would you like one?"
Chen Chuan took a glance and noticed a logo on the plant—a green leaf with a distinctive ridge, and in the gaps, a pair of narrow eyes seemed to slant outwards.
As he looked, the Intercom displayed a series of information. It was the logo of the Green Source Ecology Company, and by clicking on it, one could directly access product introductions and payment platforms.
The bugs from the Convergence Ground couldn't be cleared away in a short time. It seemed that the citizens of the Central City might need this plant frequently, and related applications might become more widespread.
Chen Chuan recalled seeing this company on the Jinbei Province Government Hall's list of companies to be vigilant about. It was clear that this company wasn't ordinary, and he knew that behind the Plague Cult in the Lower District might very well be this Green Source Ecology Company. It seemed that he would need to pay more attention.
He called out to the waiter, "Leave it here."
The waiter immediately placed the potted plant on the table.
Wu Han picked up the menu to order, selected their choices, and handed it to Chen Chuan and Wei Dong. After they had ordered, the waiter said, "Please wait a moment, it'll be ready soon."
Chen Chuan asked, "Senior, how's it going with Old Qi and his group? Has anyone been causing trouble for you?"
Wu Han thought for a moment and said, "Junior, I almost forgot about this. At first, it seemed like someone was keeping an eye on us, but then they disappeared. They probably gave up. Even if they come, I'm not afraid."
Chen Chuan said, "Still, be cautious. In the next few months, if you encounter any problems, you can directly call the Yangzhi City Handling Bureau or the Patrol Bureau and ask for me."
Wu Han assured him, "Don't worry, if anything happens, I'll definitely contact you. Oh, by the way, it's been half a year already. Junior, you'll be going back for your vacation soon. What about the other juniors and Wei Chang'an's group? Have they arrived yet?"
Chen Chuan replied, "They were supposed to arrive in April, but because of the recent incident, I got the news early. I decided to let them come later. When I return, I'll meet them, and if possible, I'll bring them back with me."
Just then, the restaurant door opened, and a large group of people entered. At the front was a man wearing sunglasses, his thin hair styled with groove-like engravings. Everyone wore identical boots with golden engraved lines.
The leader scanned the room and headed towards Chen Chuan's table. His followers moved aside the waiter, and nearby customers quickly moved away. Some wanted to leave but found the door blocked, so they retreated to the corners.
The man sat down at the table next to Chen Chuan's group, pulling over a chair. He removed his sunglasses and looked at Chen Chuan, letting out a 'hey' before saying, "I didn't expect a big shot like you to visit our street. I doubt anyone here would dare to offend your highness."
Chen Chuan glanced at him, and the Intercom displayed a series of information. This man was Tan Chong, a leader of the Golden Boot Gang, known as 'Leech.' He had mid-range implants, with military-grade heart, lung, and skeletal implants, but no criminal record.
It was only natural, as these gang leaders had specialized lawyers to get them off the hook and underlings to take the fall. As long as they were careful, they wouldn't leave any evidence, which was why they dared to show up here and speak to him face-to-face.
He spoke in a calm tone, "I don't have the time for this."
Tan Chong said, "If you say so, I'll take your word for it. I don't think you big shots would go out of your way just to give me a hard time. I understand the rules, and this meal is on me."
He stood up, "I won't bother you any further." As he spoke, he put on his sunglasses and left with his men. The waiter hurried to see them off.
Wu Han leaned back in his chair, "This guy is quite cocky, isn't he?"
Tan Chong and his men stepped outside, but before they could take two steps, they suddenly stopped. There were over a dozen combat-ready, bug-like flying creatures hovering in the air, assuming a battle stance. Their compound eyes reflected their figures, and the sharp, curved claws on their abdomens were chilling.
The An-Shield device on Chen Chuan's Intercom beeped, "Supervisor Chen, multiple Golden Boot Gang members have been detected in your vicinity. Nearby patrol combat creatures have been dispatched. Do you require a defensive sweep?"
Chen Chuan said, "No need, I'm just having a meal. There's no danger here."
"Roger that. Alert lifted. Biological weapons are withdrawing."
Outside the door, Tan Chong watched as the combat bugs turned and flew away. He felt a cold sweat break out all over his body. Every implanted person in his group had reacted involuntarily, but they knew it was futile. These swift biological weapons could easily wipe them all out.
Only large gangs had the manpower and weapons to counter such weaponry.
Tan Chong knew how these creatures had appeared. He glanced back at the restaurant with lingering fear and left without a word. The people behind him also hurried away, feeling lucky to have survived.
Chen Chuan didn't take the matter to heart. Wu Han and Wei Dong were both bold individuals, and they didn't seem concerned. Besides, only one or two of the visitors could barely be considered fighters, posing no threat to them.
After the meal, as both had things to attend to and weren't returning to their residence, Chen Chuan offered to drop them off at the station. He then drove back to Wu Yi.
