Chapter 605: Seeking Assistance
Chapter 605: Seeking Assistance
With Sirius's assurance, Harry and his friends were elated and eagerly anticipated the start of the new school year.
Meanwhile, Kyle had not returned to Ottery St. Catchpole. His trunk, always by his side, contained almost everything he needed, from assignments to other essentials.
Even if he had left a few books behind, he could have them sent back by owl, so there was no need to go home.
The reason for his early departure from 12 Grimmauld Place was something else entirely.
After Apparating, Kyle found himself in the midst of a lush forest.
On a pine tree to his left, a colorful Bowtruckle tilted its head curiously at him.
"Long time no see, Buddy," Kyle greeted the creature, and it responded with a chirp.
Suddenly, a strangely dressed house-elf appeared a short distance ahead.
He wore a wicker armor-like outfit and a pair of long rubber boots.
Upon seeing Kyle, his initial wariness transformed into delight.
"Oh, Mr. Kyle, is that you?"
"Yes, it's me, Dobby," Kyle replied. "How have you been?"
"Thanks to Mr. Kyle," the house-elf exclaimed with excitement. "Dobby loves it here; it's fantastic to work in such a place!"
"That's good," Kyle smiled. "Is Newt at home?"
"Yes, he is," Dobby nodded repeatedly. "Mr. Scamander is tending to the young Invisible Creature... Oh, Dobby must hurry back to help!"
As he spoke, he turned and rushed deeper into the forest.
Kyle followed, and after a turn ahead, a wooden cabin suddenly materialized before him.
The door was ajar, and a gray-haired witch stood there.
"I just heard Dobby calling your name," Tina smiled. "Come in, I've just baked some biscuits."
Dobby couldn't help but grimace.
Even now, Dobby still struggled to accept Tina's restriction from the kitchen.
It was torture for a house-elf... Fortunately, he had plenty of other tasks to keep him occupied.
As soon as he entered the cabin, Dobby eagerly dashed into the innermost room.
Before long, Newt emerged from within.
"Hogwarts starts tomorrow, doesn't it?"
At that moment, Tina brought a plate of lemon biscuits and set it before Kyle. "I thought you wouldn't come here this year."
"A lot has happened during the holidays," Kyle explained.
He didn't hide anything, openly sharing his encounter with Voldemort and the unexpected interrogation by the Ministry of Magic.
Tina's smile gradually faded, her expression turning increasingly serious.
As a former Auror, she saw no issue with Kyle's actions. When faced with the evil Death Eaters, one must do everything possible to protect themselves.
Using the Incendio Curse was justified, and even the Avada Kedavra Curse could be warranted.
However, Tina hadn't anticipated that the Death Eaters would report to the Ministry of Magic. In her entire career, she had never encountered such a situation.
"Thankfully, there's Diana," she said with relief.
"Yes," Kyle nodded. If the Memory Recall Spell hadn't worked, his interrogation wouldn't have gone so smoothly.
Newt, standing nearby, also breathed a sigh of relief. He knew about Kyle's encounter with Voldemort but was unaware of the subsequent interrogation.
"Don't worry," Tina assured Kyle. "If you encounter Death Eaters again, you can still do what you did, whether it's the Incendio Curse or anything else, to protect yourself.
"As for the Ministry's potential inquiry, don't be concerned. If they pursue the matter, I can send you to Ilvermorny; the British Ministry of Magic has no jurisdiction there."
"Hey, you should trust Dumbledore," Newt whispered. "He wouldn't let Kyle be convicted."
"Let's hope so," Tina said, slightly annoyed.
She understood Newt's unconditional trust in Dumbledore, but that didn't mean Dumbledore could do everything.
Sometimes, it was necessary to make alternative preparations.
Newt was well aware of Tina's thoughts, so he didn't argue.
After finishing the biscuits, Newt prepared to return to his trunk. The young Invisible Creature still needed time to adapt to its environment, and although Dobby was helping, Newt remained a bit anxious.
Kyle followed him.
"I heard Dumbledore mention that the Dark Wizard has returned."
Once inside the trunk, Newt took a blanket from the shelf and said, "I offered to help, but Dumbledore declined. He only asked me to write to a few friends, inviting them to come to Britain."
"Ah, it's fine. We can handle it," Kyle assured him.
He approved of Dumbledore's decision. Newt was indeed a powerful ally, but he was nearly a hundred years old, and there was no need to involve him in this matter.
Moreover, there was another crucial factor—Newt's unpredictability. It wouldn't matter in Paris, but this was Britain, their home turf, and unless absolutely necessary, it was best to keep him out of it.
Dobby was crouched down, using a stick with a vine ball attached to play with the newly-hatched Invisible Creature. Its fur was a shade of grey-brown, and its invisibility was not very effective, flickering in and out of sight like a young wizard who had just learned the Disillusionment Charm but was not yet proficient in its use.
It was only when they grew a little older and their fur turned silver-white that they could better conceal themselves, making this the most vulnerable stage of their lives.
Upon hearing footsteps, Dobby immediately turned around and greeted the two newcomers.
"Mr. Scamander, I feel like its invisibility is much better than before," Dobby said.
"That's right," Newt smiled, "The young Invisible Creatures learn quickly. They can barely avoid their predators two days after birth, but it takes a full month for them to completely transform into their silver-white form."
"Mr. Scamander, Dobby can definitely take good care of it," Dobby assured, patting his chest.
"I have no doubt about that," Newt smiled, "But it's best if you don't stay here all the time. Doing so will cause them to lose their natural vigilance and make the adult Invisible Creatures uneasy."
"It's best if you hide in a more secluded spot, like..." Newt pointed to an area with lush bushes.
Although he didn't fully understand, Dobby nodded and quickly ran over to hide among the bushes, leaving only his large ears exposed.
The two then went to another location.
As Kyle had come all this way, Newt didn't want to miss the opportunity to show him some of the unusual and temperamental magical creatures he was caring for.
Kyle once again played the role of a magical creature psychologist, helping to uncover the reasons for their unusual behavior.
It wasn't until the evening that they finally emerged from the Mooncalf cave.
A Mooncalf had been ostracized by its clan for not dancing properly. Newt had spent the entire afternoon teaching it to dance, and it was only now that he had finished.
"Should we go back for dinner?" Newt asked, checking the time. "Or do you want to see more places?"
"I'm not hungry yet," Kyle said with a smile.
Newt nodded, as if understanding something. "Go ahead, where do you want to go?"
"But I should remind you that Dumbledore doesn't allow certain magical creatures into the castle, like the Venomous Sphinx," Newt said.
Kyle, who had just opened his mouth, closed it again.
He had indeed come to seek Newt's help. Diana was right; sometimes, dealing with Death Eaters wasn't just about using the Incendio Curse.
So he had thought of another approach... getting some help.
The Venomous Sphinx was one of his original intentions, but before he could even ask, Newt had directly refused.
"It's a special time now," Kyle said softly, "And I'm confident I can control it."
"This..." Newt hesitated.
As Kyle had said, the Death Eaters had already made a move against him, and no one could guarantee there wouldn't be a second attempt.
Moreover, the Death Eaters had used a different tactic this time... reporting to the Ministry of Magic. Their scheme had failed this time, but what if they tried again? Surely Kyle couldn't just hide at Ilvermorny.
"The Venomous Sphinx doesn't distinguish between friend and foe," Newt said quietly said softly, "Once it launches an attack, everyone around will be affected, and it's very likely that it will harm its own allies."
"I'll be careful," Kyle said.
Newt fell silent for a long time before finally speaking, "Only the Venomous Sphinx?"
"Oh, and there's another one," Kyle whispered as he leaned in.
After hearing Kyle out, Newt immediately widened his eyes and shook his head repeatedly, saying,
"No, I can lend you the Venomous Sphinx, but this one is absolutely not possible. It's too dangerous, and Dumbledore will definitely not agree to you bringing it into the castle..."
"That was before. The situation is different now," Kyle said. "The castle itself is no longer safe, and you could say it's facing an unprecedented crisis."
"Moreover, it's a member of Hogwarts, and it has a responsibility to contribute to the protection of the school."
"Even if you say that," Newt shook his head, "How about this: I'll write a letter to Dumbledore, and if he agrees, then there's no problem."
"No need," Kyle said softly, "And it was originally mine, anyway."
He didn't want Dumbledore to know about this matter; otherwise, he was almost certain that Dumbledore wouldn't agree.
"This is necessary," Newt said, "And there's one thing you got wrong: it can only be handed over to you after you graduate."
"Okay," Kyle looked around and changed the subject, "How about we go see the Venomous Sphinx first? The little one from before should have grown up by now."
"Although it's not yet an adult, it has indeed grown a lot," Newt said.
