Chapter 603: A Minor Issue
Chapter 603: A Minor Issue
Lu JiaGuang had spent the entire day in meetings and upon returning home, he retired to his room to rest. Wang Xiaojie had intended to speak to him about Lu HongJun's matter, but seeing his exhausted state, she decided against bringing it up.
The next morning, after the children left for school, Lu JiaGuang prepared to head to work. Wang Xiaojie stopped him, saying that she needed to discuss something important.
Seeing her solemn expression, Lu JiaGuang was intrigued. Once they entered his study, he asked, "What is it? Why didn't you mention it last night?"
Wang Xiaojie knew that he tended to worry a lot, so she explained, "If I had told you last night, you would have stayed up all night worrying. I kept it from you so that you could have a good night's rest."
Something that could keep him up all night worrying must be serious. Lu JiaGuang's expression turned grave as he asked, "What happened?"
Wang Xiaojie relayed every word Lu JiaGuang had said the other day: "Your third uncle retired five years ago, and it wasn't an honorable retirement. His former colleague was arrested, and no matter what, he shouldn't have come begging to your third uncle. But his relative came pleading to your third uncle, and after that phone call, he looked very troubled and even walked with a heavy gait."
After finishing, she furrowed her brows and added, "That old colleague of your third uncle must also be in a leadership position. Otherwise, even if he had the intention, he wouldn't have been able to get his hands on so much money to buy a large house."
If it weren't for JiaXin's antique shop needing their help, their family wouldn't have been able to afford such a large house. To put it bluntly, even if they had taken the money through corruption, they wouldn't dare to spend it openly. Otherwise, the house would be bought with one foot, and the other foot would land the head of the family in jail.
Lu JiaGuang's heart skipped a beat. The origins of the antiques Lu HongJun had bought were unclear, and now that some old comrade had fallen into their net and pleaded with them, he felt a sense of unease.
Seeing that he was about to leave with a grave expression, Wang Xiaojie quickly called out to him, "JiaGuang, that woman and your third uncle are not of one mind. It's better to discuss this at home. If she overhears and twists things, a non-issue could become a big problem."
Lu JiaGuang agreed with her reasoning and said, "Then go and call Third Uncle here. I'll wait for him here."
Lu HongJun had gone out in the morning to practice tai chi and was just having breakfast when Wang Xiaojie came to tell him that there was a call from his old home asking for him. He immediately put down his chopsticks and went over.
Tang Sufen wasn't foolish either; how could she not know that the phone call from his old home was just an excuse? However, she didn't follow him. Even if she did, she wouldn't be able to hear what they were discussing, as Lu JiaGuang and his wife were very secretive.
Lu JiaGuang saw that Lu HongJun looked normal and felt relieved. If something was wrong, he would have been anxious.
Once they were in the study, Lu JiaGuang asked the most pressing question, "Third Uncle, what exactly did your former colleague do?"
Lu HongJun's expression changed slightly as he replied, "He was the chief financial officer of a department store."
Lu JiaGuang's heart sank. A CFO getting into trouble these days was a very sensitive matter. "Third Uncle, you don't have any skeletons in the closet that he could use against you, do you?"
Lu HongJun trusted his nephew: "There are no major issues, but there might be some minor ones. Giving gifts and treating leaders to meals can't be done openly, so we used other pretexts for reimbursement. Also, there were some defective products in the department store. We distributed some and sold others, and then we split the money."
"Is that all?"
Lu HongJun glared at him and said, "Of course, that's all! Do you think I'm capable of embezzlement? If I were going to embezzle, I wouldn't stop at just this amount of money."
Lu JiaGuang wasn't so easily convinced, and he pressed further, "Then tell me, where did you get the money to buy those antiques?"
Lu HongJun didn't answer that question directly, but he emphasized, "Rest assured, the money didn't come from embezzlement or bribery.
Lu JiaGuang considered his third uncle's words. Even if the money had come from questionable sources, it was unlikely that he would have embezzled funds directly from the department store. One wrong move could bring disaster upon his entire family, and Lu HongJun wasn't foolish enough to take such a risk.
"Third Uncle, can you be sure that no one will investigate the source of that money?" Lu JiaGuang asked.
Lu HongJun understood his nephew's concerns and wanted to reassure him. "Rest assured, the two people who handled the money are no longer alive. One passed away due to illness, and the other perished in a car accident."
Since he had not been directly involved, and both witnesses were now deceased, Lu HongJun felt confident that there would be no evidence to implicate him. Sometimes, he even felt as if fate was on his side.
Hearing this, Lu JiaGuang felt relieved. However, he still wanted to emphasize, "Third Uncle, if there's ever a problem, you mustn't hide it from me. If you can't rely on me for help, remember that JiaXin is also here for you! She may not have fully let go of the past, but she will never stand by and watch you get into trouble."
After all, having her father imprisoned would not reflect well on her, and it might tarnish her reputation. Given her contributions, as long as the crime wasn't heinous, she should be able to pull some strings and smooth things over.
Lu HongJun acknowledged with a sound of agreement, "You don't have to tell me that. If anything happens, I will definitely let you know."
A couple of days later, Lu HongJun was also summoned for questioning, supposedly to assist in the investigation. He didn't know what Kang Jinzhou had said, but once he stepped into that place, he had no intention of hiding anything. His old bones couldn't handle the pressure. So, as soon as he sat down, he spilled everything he had done that went against regulations, one confession after another.
The interrogators were surprised by his level of cooperation. They recorded his statements and then asked, "Aside from these things, is there anything else?"
Lu HongJun shook his head, indicating that was all. "That's everything. To be honest, gentlemen, I didn't want to do those things, but under those circumstances, if I didn't, no one would support me."
"I know what I did was wrong. If I'm to be punished or fined, I accept the consequences without complaint."
His attitude was commendable, but the investigators didn't fully trust him. However, when they reviewed Kang Jinzhou's confession, they found that it matched Lu HongJun's statements perfectly, and there was nothing more to uncover.
The disciplinary commission investigated Lu HongJun's financial situation. Aside from the housing unit in the residential compound, Lu HongJun had no other assets. Even the apartment he currently lived in, located in Chaoyang, had been bought by his daughter for him, and the property was still under her name.
The leader listened to the new investigator's report and nodded, then instructed him to halt the investigation.
The new investigator was perplexed. "Sir, why are we stopping? Even though his daughter bought the apartment, she's only in her early twenties. Where did she get the money to buy a place worth several tens of thousands? The money must have come from him; he's just using his daughter's name to make the purchase."
The leader praised the investigator for his diligence and then explained, "There are always people beyond our reach. Lu HongJun's daughter is a well-known wealthy businesswoman in Hong Kong City. Over the years, she has donated a lot of money to the country and funded scholarships for underprivileged students. Buying a modest home for her father is nothing compared to her other contributions."
The investigator, still unconvinced, asked, "She's donated a lot of money? Where did she get that money from?"
The leader replied, "Lu HongJun's daughter, Lu Jiaxin, is known to the higher-ups. While Lu HongJun's actions were indeed in violation of regulations, he has already retired, so we will not pursue the matter further."
The investigator furrowed his brow and asked, "Sir, how did she end up in Hong Kong City? How did she get the capital to start her business? Shouldn't we investigate these matters further?"
The leader sighed, "No need to investigate. This is an order from above."
The investigator was clearly dissatisfied, but he couldn't go against his leader's decision.
