Chapter 6: The Library
Chapter 6: The Library
"Ivan, how about we play some Wizard Chess back in the dorm after dinner?" On Wednesday afternoon, after the last class, Ron asked Ivan while munching on a chicken leg in the Common Room, his words slightly muffled.
Ivan slowly placed the last piece of beef in his mouth, pondered for a moment, and then shook his head in refusal.
"No, I have to go to the library later. You can play with Harry."
"Harry's chess moves are so terrible, there's no challenge at all", Ron said, first shaking his head in disappointment. Then, as if suddenly realizing what Ivan had said, the chicken leg in his hand fell to the floor.
"My God! The library? I thought only one person in the whole year would go there!"
"Hermione?" Ivan thought for a moment. The little Wizard who had been running to the library every day since the start of the term could only be their know-it-all Miss Granger.
"Who else?" Ron said with exaggerated tone.
Beside them, Harry suddenly tugged at Ron's shoulder, and Ron noticed that Hermione, holding a stack of books, was also in the Common Room. He then lowered his voice and began to gossip about how much Hermione loved to lecture and how arrogant she was, in front of everyone.
Fortunately, perhaps because of the distance, Hermione didn't react, as if she hadn't heard Ron's words.
Harry looked awkward, listening to the gossip. He didn't like talking badly about others behind their backs, but the other little Wizards seemed quite interested.
It was undeniable that Miss Granger had become a well-known figure in the little Wizards' gossip circle in just a few days, thanks to her love of lecturing.
Ivan didn't join in the gossip about Hermione, but he wasn't surprised by the situation.
After all, they were all eleven or twelve-year-old little Wizards, and no one liked being lectured to, especially by a peer.
"Ivan, what are you going to the library for?" Harry asked curiously.
Are the brothers not fun to play with? Or is the Wizard Flag not fun enough? Although Ron didn't speak, his eyes clearly conveyed this thought.
It was like a friend you had agreed to play games with every day after school suddenly saying they would go to the library to study.
Ivan's lips twitched.
He didn't want to play Wizard Flag at all. He was just trying to see if there were other ways to earn academic points.
It wasn't because the Wizard Flag was new and fun.
"Didn't you notice that the homework the Professors are assigning is getting harder? What are we going to do during the Finals if we don't start working hard now?" Ivan glanced at Harry, then sighed after a long pause.
Ivan knew he had average talent and a disadvantage in Wand Compatibility, placing him in the lower-middle range in terms of spellcasting among the first-year Wizards.
In this situation, the only way to improve the Professors' evaluations was to focus on building knowledge.
Improving his knowledge base could help him answer questions in class and maybe even earn some extra credit.
"Ron, do you want to come?" Ivan finished eating, tidied up his things, and asked Ron.
Although Ron had slightly better Magic talent, he was still only in the upper-middle range. Compared to Harry, the difference was significant. Moreover, Ron didn't put in much effort, which is why he would be the weakest of the trio in the future.
Out of kindness, Ivan reminded him, though he didn't really expect Ron to agree.
Sure enough, Ron shook his head rapidly. "Are you kidding? We've only been here a few days, and the Finals are still far away. Why rush?"
"Alright then." Ivan didn't mind and walked straight to the library.
"Just wait, Ivan will be back in an hour, or I'll eat the chessboard", Ron muttered, making a bet.
The Hogwarts Library, with its vast collection of Magic books, was the largest and most complete in all of Britain and even Europe. From ordinary textbooks to advanced Dark Arts and Curses, the library had it all!
The first time in the library, Ivan was stunned by the sheer volume of books. Row after row of Shelves were tightly packed, each holding thousands of Magic books, far more impressive than what he had seen in movies in his previous life.
Perhaps because it was the start of the term, there weren't many little Wizards in the library. They were scattered in small groups by the Shelves or in the corridors, leaving the central seating area mostly empty.
[Ding, Library Explored]
The system notification pulled Ivan's attention back. He noticed that the Explore Hogwarts task in the Quest Tree had increased by five percentage points.
More importantly, with this increase, he now had enough academic points to redeem the Scholar Experience Card, which required 100 points.
Ivan couldn't help but glance at the Restricted Section, where he could find the Legilimency and Occlumency spells he was looking for.
"Child, are you looking for a specific book?" Madam Pince, the librarian, approached and asked softly.
"Yes, Madam. Do you have any books on Transfiguration Spells? Preferably something basic", Ivan replied, turning his gaze from the Restricted Section to Madam Pince.
"Follow me", Madam Pince led Ivan to a Shelf, took out a copy of Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration, and handed it to him. She then added,
"You were looking at the Restricted Section. Unless you have authorization from the Professors, you are not allowed to view or borrow those books."
"I was just curious, not planning to go in", Ivan said, shrugging as he took the book.
Ivan had no intention of reading those dangerous books in the near future. Given his current Magic foundation, it wasn't appropriate for him to study such advanced spells.
After all, he had an entire semester ahead. He could wait until he had the time and opportunity.
After explaining to Ivan, Madam Pince turned and left, as she had to keep an eye on the older students who often tried to sneak into the Restricted Section.
Of course, before leaving, she didn't forget to remind Ivan to keep quiet in the library!
Sitting down in the seating area, Ivan didn't rush to test the effects of the Scholar Experience Card. Instead, he started flipping through the book, planning to read for a while in his normal state before comparing the improvement in his learning efficiency.
The Common Room soon fell silent, with only the sound of pages turning, occasionally interrupted by the faint noises from elsewhere.
