Chapter 6: Dianthus Dai
Chapter 6: Dianthus Dai
Jing He held his coffee and walked towards the new student registration area.
Although he wasn't particularly enthusiastic about it, he suspected that Dr. Solans couldn't find anyone because the stone containing the Gastly had disappeared. Perhaps Dr. Solans had gone to look for the stone. Since this matter also involved him and Gastly, he decided to take it on.
Arriving at the new student registration area, he found several teachers already seated, either organizing forms or chatting with each other. The most striking was a Fighting-type instructor with a Lucario, who was simultaneously chatting with a female teacher and organizing documents. The Lucario's spoon bent, and as its eyes glowed, the papers on the table began to fly around on their own. It was uncertain if they were being organized correctly, but Jing He couldn't help but think, "Lucario can do it, so Gastly should be able to do it too."
Gastly, despite being a Ghost and Poison-type Pokemon, could still learn Psychic-type moves and abilities. After all, it made sense for ghosts and spirits to have some psychic powers. Such explanations fit well with Ghost-type Pokemon.
"Teacher Jing He, are you handling the new student registrations today?"
"Teacher Jing He, good morning."
"..."
Jing He found his seat and exchanged brief pleasantries with a few teachers he had only met a few times. He began organizing the forms, waiting for the new students to arrive.
Soon enough, students started trickling in, either with their Pokemon and Poke Balls or carrying large piles of documents. His job was simple: register the new students' names and majors, and if they needed on-campus housing, arrange it for them. The admission qualifications had already been reviewed, so the registration was just a formality.
"Next."
Jing He called out without looking up. A long queue had already formed in front of him.
Speaking of which, the Kanaz Pokemon Academy was one of the top Pokemon schools in the Hoenn region and had a significant reputation in the Pokemon world. Therefore, many students with strong backgrounds came to enroll.
A boy sat down in front of him.
"Name," Jing He asked, holding a form.
"Dianthus Dai, Dianthus Dai. Majoring in Pokemon Battles and Pokemon Breeding, with minors in History, Geology, and Metal Synthesis. Hmm?"
Jing He paused as he found the name and major on the form, then subtly observed the boy in front of him. Light blue, almost silver-blue hair, a standard noble suit, a handsome face, and a charming smile. "Dianthus?" Jing He said.
Dianthus Dai! The future Champion of the Hoenn region, the heir to Devon Corporation, one of the largest companies in the Pokemon world, and one of the most famous rich and handsome men in the Pokemon world!
"Yes, teacher," Dianthus replied with a gentle smile, showing no signs of the typical arrogance of an heir.
Jing He nodded slightly, registered the information on the form, and found the corresponding student ID. As he handed it over, he said, "Since you're not boarding, I won't arrange a dormitory. You can access the digital textbooks by entering the student ID number on the school website."
"Thank you."
Dianthus took the student ID, thanked him, and stood to the side, seemingly waiting for someone.
Before Jing He could call out the next student, a quiet girl with twin buns and wearing a school uniform and pink leggings sat down.
"Are you... Teacher Jing He?"
The girl seemed to recognize Jing He but wasn't quite sure, so she asked tentatively.
"Hmm?"
Jing He was slightly taken aback. He hadn't expected a new student to recognize him. Even the older students might not know his name.
"Do you know me?" Jing He asked.
"Really you?!"
The girl's face lit up with surprise.
"Dove, you know this teacher?" Dianthus, who had been waiting, asked, somewhat surprised.
Dove?
The Gym Leader of the Kanaz Gym?
Jing He's gaze swept over the two of them.
Dove nodded vigorously. "Cousin, you don't know, Teacher Jing He once scored a perfect score in Pokemon theory and was the top student in the Hoenn region, entering the Kanto Silver University!"
Perfect score in theory?
Top student in the Hoenn region?
Dianthus looked at Jing He, who didn't seem much older than him, with surprise. How could someone with such an impressive record be teaching at the Kanaz Pokemon Academy, even if it was the most famous Pokemon school in the Hoenn region?
Dianthus couldn't help but feel curious.
"Cough."
Jing He cleared his throat and handed Dove her student ID. "Dove, here's your student ID. Please keep it safe."
"Thank you, teacher." Dove took the ID obediently. After a brief hesitation, she asked again, "Teacher Jing He, may I ask... which department are you a mentor in?"
"Psychology of Pokemon," Jing He replied casually.
Neither Dianthus nor Dove had chosen his course in their schedules. Since there was still a long queue, the two of them didn't stay long and left after completing their registration.
Jing He successfully completed the new student registration task and dragged his tired body back to the consultation room.
"Kya?"
When it noticed Jing He's return, Gastly cautiously poked its head out from the ceiling, wearing a sheepish smile.
The corners of Jing He's mouth twitched.
Honestly, having a Pokemon that could pop out of the walls from time to time wasn't all bad. At least it added some excitement to his life, right?
"Kya?"
"Nothing."
Click.
Jing He flipped the wall switch.
The bright light from the fluorescent lamp immediately illuminated the previously dim room, dispelling much of the eerie atmosphere Gastly had brought with it. The room's temperature, however, was noticeably a few degrees cooler than outside.
'At least I won't need to use the air conditioner in the summer.'
While grumbling to himself, he said, "We can keep the lights on from now on."
"Kya~~"
Gastly obediently responded.
"Alright, let's continue where we left off. Show me your abilities."
Gastly, who was already prepared, let out another wave of black mist.
The already cool consultation room suddenly became even colder.
"Hmm?"
Jing He, who had been watching Gastly while rubbing his arms, was taken aback. In front of him, a series of translucent, ethereal words suddenly appeared.
Gastly
Type: Ghost, Poison
Ability: Levitate
Known Moves: Confuse Ray, Lick, Hypnosis, Dark Pulse, Grudge, Scary Face, Curse, Will-O-Wisp
Mood: Happy, Nervous
Condition: Good (It seems to be not fully recovered due to a long period of hibernation)
Friendship: 75 (Gastly has acknowledged you, but you still need to work on becoming closer)
Is this Gastly's information?
As he scanned the text, he noticed the faint glowing spots in the black mist around Gastly. These spots then converged, forming a small, eerie glowing orb—Confuse Ray!
Indeed, this was one of Gastly's known moves.
So, this must be Gastly's information.
Jing He's lips twitched as he read through the list of moves.
Well, well.
He inwardly exclaimed.
Gastly knew a total of eight moves, which was quite a lot.
But all eight moves were control or debuff moves!
Confuse Ray could confuse the opponent, Hypnosis could put them to sleep, Dark Pulse could prevent them from escaping, Grudge could affect their move usage, Curse could continuously weaken their health, and Will-O-Wisp could burn them. Even the attack moves Lick and Scary Face had the negative effects of paralysis and flinching, respectively.
With such a set of moves, to be honest, even if the opponent didn't lose, their mental state would be pretty much ruined.
Jing He could only say—no wonder it's a Gastly, no wonder it can evolve into a Haunter.
Of course, in the games, a Pokemon can only be affected by one status condition at a time, but in reality, that might be different.
However, one thing he was certain of was that the success rate of status conditions was tied to the move's proficiency and the Pokemon's strength.
Sometimes, having a lot of moves that aren't very proficient was less effective than having a few highly proficient ones.
'But Gastly has a Poison type ability, right? It probably hasn't developed that side yet, so it didn't even realize it could poison me. But it does have that potential.'
'Wait a minute.'
The friendship level was easy to understand—Gastly was willing to be his Pokemon, so its affection couldn't be low, but since it was just caught, it couldn't be too high either.
The "Happy" part of the mood was fine, but why "Nervous"?
Jing He's expression turned suspicious.
When he first entered, Gastly's expression was off.
"Kya?"
Gastly, who had just used a move, looked a bit panicked when it saw his expression. Its eyes darted around, and its body shifted uneasily.
Jing He quickly noticed that its gaze kept drifting toward the desk.
He walked over to the desk.
As expected, Gastly's expression became even more panicked when it saw his movement.
When Jing He reached the desk and saw his computer, he called out, "Gastly!"
"Kya!"
Please let me explain!
On Jing He's computer, a trail of black smoke was rising.
A black line appeared on his forehead.
"Kya, kya..."
Knock knock.
Just as Gastly was about to explain, there was another knock on the door.
Jing He rubbed his temples and waved at Gastly.
Gastly immediately slithered back into the ceiling, relieved.
"Come in."
The door opened, and a familiar voice followed.
"Sorry to disturb you, Professor. I'm a first-year student. Do you know Dr. Solance, Professor Jing He?"
It was Daimu.
