Chapter 6: A Difference of One Point of Luck
Chapter 6: A Difference of One Point of Luck
As dusk fell, Qin Muye opened his eyes and grabbed a piece of bread and a cup of water, eating them casually to fill his stomach.
Glancing at the meager supply of food, he knew it would likely run out by tomorrow.
Today, he had spent the day reviewing the Basic Elemental Meditation Technique and reading the Imp Experiment Manual. Thanks to his two talents, the Basic Enlightenment, Basic Academic Skills, and even the single point of knowledge, his learning progress had skyrocketed.
Yesterday, he had merely been learning. Today, he understood.
The difference was like memorizing the multiplication table versus truly grasping multiplication.
"Unfortunately, I only have the Basic Elemental Meditation Technique, which doesn't provide much insight into the broader knowledge of mages," Qin Muye said with a hint of regret. This meditation technique offered limited content and no spells or other techniques.
He mastered the meditation technique in just an hour, so he spent the rest of the day studying and understanding the Imp Experiment Manual. This is when he realized why the building for recruiting imps was called the Imp Workshop.
The book was a testament to the suffering of garden gnomes and imps.
The first half detailed how to transform garden gnomes into imps through magical experiments. If Qin Muye had a garden gnome, he was about 70% confident he could transform it into a loyal imp. The 70% confidence came from his theoretical knowledge; to achieve 100% success, he would need practical experience.
The second half focused on magical experiments on imps. Most of these experiments failed, with only a few successful cases. These successes demonstrated three skills: Magical Constitution, Magical Wisdom, and Loyal Taming.
After a day of study, Qin Muye finally understood the secrets, all of which revolved around a mage's magic.
This meant he could perform transformations himself to enhance the imps' abilities, especially with the foundation of Magical Constitution and Magical Wisdom, giving him about a 50% success rate. If he became more proficient, it could increase to 80%.
So, he needed an imp to practice on.
"Master, the exploration team has returned," an imp said respectfully.
Qin Muye realized it was already dusk.
He stretched, having taken a short nap in the afternoon and meditated for fifteen minutes to restore his energy. Unfortunately, his magic power hadn't increased.
Normally, fifteen minutes of meditation a day was sufficient, as meditating for too long could damage one's spirit.
Perhaps a better meditation technique would help in the future.
"Good, let's go see what they've brought back," Qin Muye said as he stood up and led the imp to the first floor of the mage tower. Since there were no specific buildings yet, the imps had to make do with the first floor.
When Qin Muye arrived, six imps were waiting, each carrying various items.
"Great Master, we found two treasures on our journey: a magic scroll, a bag of wheat seeds, a bag of grape seeds, and three bags of corn seeds," one imp reported respectfully.
Qin Muye recognized this imp; it was the one who had asked him questions earlier in the morning.
Looking at the items, he began to doubt his luck. How on earth did they manage to find all this?
'Wait a minute, could it be that one point of luck?' Qin Muye suddenly realized.
Yesterday, when the goblin was leading the group, the luck should have been primarily on his side. However, today, the goblin was acting on its own, fully utilizing its 1 point of luck, which is why it managed to pick up these items.
'This goblin's hidden strength is really something else. No wonder it was so easily taken down without any defense.'
Yesterday, the most valuable item he found was a single unit of gems. Today, the goblin brought back not just gems but also treasures and magic scrolls.
He focused on the two treasures: a sapphire headband and a standard suit of armor, both classified as Entry-Level treasures.
Sapphire Headband
Rank: Basic
Attributes:
- Knowledge +1
- Magic Power +10
Standard Suit of Armor
Rank: Basic
Attributes:
- Defense +2
The sapphire headband looked like a simple blue ribbon, while the standard suit of armor was a heavy piece of equipment, likely carried back by three goblins working together.
Goblins, being mere units and not lords, don't have item storage, so the team that found the standard suit of armor had fewer other items. Besides the armor, they only managed to pick up a bag of corn seeds.
The sapphire headband and the remaining items were found by another team of goblins.
The magic scroll contained a 1st-level spell: Eye of Magic.
Magic Scroll: Eye of Magic
Spell Rank: 1
Effect: Increases vision by 1 for 10 minutes
This was good news for Qin Muye. Perhaps he could learn the Eye of Magic spell from this scroll.
He had no recollection of this spell from the Might and Magic games, but it didn't matter. This was a real world, not a game, and the magic scroll seemed to be a one-time use item that would disappear after use.
"Great job. Since it's still dusk, let's plant the corn seeds. For water, you can go to the river. Oh, and I realize we don't have a container for water, so use the standard suit of armor. Seal one end and have a few goblins carry it."
Qin Muye equipped the sapphire headband, took the Eye of Magic scroll, and stored the remaining seeds in the resource storage.
Six goblins, following his instructions, carried the standard suit of armor and the corn seeds out.
The standard suit of armor came at just the right time. It could serve as a water container and even a cooking pot. The only downside was that it wasn't a helmet, which would have been even more convenient.
Then, he turned his attention to the goblin that was severely injured, down to just 1 hit point.
"You know that with such severe injuries, you can't heal on your own, and we don't have any means to treat you."
"So, I have a 50% chance of healing you and making you stronger, but if I fail, you will die. Are you willing to take that risk?"
A glimmer of hope flashed in the goblin's eyes as it weakly replied, "I am willing, my lord. Even death is better than wasting food on me."
"Since you're willing, the next step is to eat. You need to consume enough food to provide your body with the necessary nutrients." Qin Muye took out white bread, water, and the cooked smoked meat they found yesterday and fed it to the goblin.
