Chapter 597: I Have My Limits Too (1)
Chapter 597: I Have My Limits Too (1)
Lu Jiaxin decided to go ahead with her Bali vacation. This time, she would go first, and Nie Zhan would join her later when he was done with his work commitments. Of course, if he couldn't make it, that would be fine too, as long as it didn't interfere with her break.
As she was packing, Zong Shimen called her: "Jiaxin, where are you going for your vacation? Can I come with you?"
She knew that Lu Jiaxin was going on this trip alone and wouldn't have asked if she were going with Nie Zhan.
Lu Jiaxin hesitated and said, "You want to come with me? What about your family and children?"
Zong Shimen's tone turned cold. "The children have their grandparents and their father. They won't miss me. Jiaxin, just tell me which flight you're on, and I'll have someone buy the tickets."
Lu Jiaxin didn't understand what had happened, but she sensed that something was bothering Zong Shimen, and a change of scenery might do her good. "I'll have my secretary buy your ticket. If you're set on coming, we can meet at the airport tomorrow morning at 8."
"Okay."
"Jiaxin, don't tell Nie Zhan about this. I don't want people to know that I'm traveling with you. Otherwise, I'll never hear the end of it," Zong Shimen added.
"Okay."
When Nie Zhan returned, Lu Jiaxin didn't mention this to him. The usually mild-mannered Shimen must have been truly upset to want to get away, indicating that something serious had happened.
As they took a stroll, Nie Zhan asked, "What's wrong? You're so quiet today. Did something happen back home again?"
The only thing that could be bothering her was her family. He could relate, given his own family troubles.
He was already aware of Lu Ping's situation, as Jiaxin had filled him in. It wasn't unusual to be manipulated by a woman, but the fact that he didn't even know if he had slept with her reflected the inadequate sex education in mainland China.
Lu Jiaxin nodded. "My uncle and aunt won't be coming. They said it's too far and the journey would be too exhausting for them. But they promised to attend our wedding."
The main issue was the bumpy, pothole-ridden roads that made traveling a real ordeal. It was understandable that the elderly couple wouldn't want to make the trip.
"Don't worry. We'll find another time for us to visit them together," Nie Zhan reassured her.
Lu Jiaxin quickly stopped him. "Never mind. Let's not jinx it. Every time we plan a vacation, something comes up with your family. Sometimes I feel like you're destined for a life of hard work."
What could Nie Zhan do but change the subject? "Su Heyuan wants to collaborate with the top automobile factory in the mainland. FAW will provide the personnel and equipment, and we'll invest financially."
"After the company is established, I'll take him to Moscow to introduce him to Moklichi. They can handle the rest between them," Lu Jiaxin suggested, snuggling closer to him. "Thank you, Azhan. I know it's a lot of work."
He patted her head gently. "Just don't get any more impulsive ideas."
The reason he didn't object firmly was twofold: Lu Jiaxin's resolute attitude and his own curiosity about her prediction. If her prediction came true this time, the automobile factory would be able to make a qualitative leap forward. Given Jiaxin's consistent confidence in the mainland, increased production capacity would undoubtedly lead to significant profits.
Lu Jiaxin smiled sheepishly.
The next morning, at the airport, Lu Jiaxin spotted Zong Shimen pushing her luggage. Usually, she would have had a driver and an assistant, but today she was alone.
Without asking any questions, Lu Jiaxin took her by the hand and led her into the airport. Only when they reached the VIP lounge did she speak.
Zong Shimen let out a bitter laugh. "That woman came to see me the day before yesterday. She said she was pregnant again and begged me on her knees to let her keep the baby."
Lu Jiaxin frowned but remained silent, waiting for Zong Shimen to continue.
"I told her I had no say in the matter and that she should discuss it with Hu Zhifeng if she wanted to keep the child," Zong Shimen said coldly. "Then last night, Hu Zhifeng told me that the woman's health was delicate, and if she lost this baby, she might never be able to have children again."
"What a joke," Zong Shimen scoffed. "Obviously, my mother-in-law doesn't want a grandchild born out of wedlock. He doesn't have the guts to stand up to her, so he's trying to pressure me instead."
From the sounds of it, Mrs. Hu wasn't too bad. At least she made her stance clear and didn't want a grandchild born to her son and his mistress. Some elderly women would dote on any child of their son's, regardless of the circumstances.
Lu Jiaxin remained silent for a moment before asking, "Shimen, what do you plan to do?"
With a cold face, Zong Shimen replied, "I had my lawyer draft a divorce agreement yesterday and left it on my dressing table before I came here. He'll see it as soon as he gets home."
Lu Jiaxin looked at her and asked, "Are you trying to scare him, or do you really want a divorce?"
Zong Shimen didn't try to sugarcoat it. "My in-laws won't agree, and I can't possibly make room for that mistress. Otherwise, my children's inheritance might be at stake."
By taking a step back, she was showing Hu Zhifeng that she, too, had her limits.
Seeing that Zong Shimen had thought it through, Lu Jiaxin didn't try to dissuade her. "This time, make sure he compensates you properly. Don't reconcile unless he gives you at least eight million."
"Mhm," Zong Shimen acknowledged. "I've been so busy taking care of the kids these past few years that I haven't had a proper vacation in a long time. This trip to Bali with you will be a chance for me to truly relax."
"Yes, let's indulge in good food, drinks, and fun. We'll forget all our troubles for a while," Lu Jiaxin agreed.
At noon, the baby started crying, and neither Mrs. Hu nor her mother-in-law could reach Zong Shimen on the phone. Helpless, Mrs. Hu called her son: "Bring your wife back immediately. The baby has been crying nonstop. How can she just disappear like this when the child is so young? What kind of mother is she?"
Hu Zhifeng didn't think much of it. "I'll have her come back right away."
When he couldn't get through to Zong Shimen, he tried calling her assistant, only to find that the assistant was on leave. "Your wife gave me a week off," the assistant explained. "She let me go yesterday afternoon, and when I left, she was still at home."
"She gave you a week off? Where did she go?" Hu Zhifeng asked.
The assistant didn't know. "She gave me the time off yesterday afternoon. When I left, she was still at home."
Hu Zhifeng figured that she must have been upset by what happened the day before, and he assumed she would come home that evening. So, he placated his mother with this excuse.
After work, he rushed home, intending to reprimand Zong Shimen, only to find that she hadn't returned. Her phone was still unreachable.
Mrs. Hu was extremely worried and urged her son to contact Zong Shimen's friends for information. "She said she had plans to go shopping with someone this morning. Call Miss Lu and see if she's with them."
Hu Zhifeng shook his head. "Miss Lu is on vacation. She's not in Hong Kong."
That day, Nie Zhan had called to invite him and a few other friends to play golf in Shek O over the weekend, mentioning that they would be staying the night there. This made Hu Zhifeng suspect that Lu Jiaxin might be traveling again, and his suspicions were confirmed when he asked.
