Chapter 593: Common Mistakes in Apparition and How to Avoid Them
Chapter 593: Common Mistakes in Apparition and How to Avoid Them
The house was cozy, with the house-elf having already lit a warm fire in the fireplace, and thick curtains shutting out the cold.
After they settled in, a house-elf—not Dobby—served them hot tea and sweets. It seemed that the heir of the Widley-Smith family had a loyal house-elf at their disposal.
As soon as Albert sat down, his eyes fell on the small booklet on the table, and he picked it up, quietly reading the title: "Common Mistakes in Apparition and How to Avoid Them?"
These booklets were obviously the "professional books" prepared for him and Isabelle.
"I'm quite familiar with Wiki Tackross. Oh, by the way, Wiki Tackross works for the Apparition Testing Center at the Ministry of Magic and is often a teacher for Hogwart's Apparition classes. You'll be dealing with him next." Mr. Mog took a sip from his teacup and explained with a smile, "Hogwarts students have about three months of exposure to Apparition from February to April, with twelve lessons. If you don't pass the exam while you're still in school, it will be much more troublesome to pass it later on."
As Mr. Mog introduced them to the concept of Apparition, Albert and Isabelle flipped through the booklet, distractedly skimming its contents.
The first page of "Common Mistakes in Apparition and How to Avoid Them" described:
Apparition is a convenient way to travel, but it also has its dangers. When a wizard Apparates, it is usually accompanied by a loud cracking sound, which can easily arouse suspicion from Muggles. Therefore, one should not Apparate recklessly but with caution, only doing so when it is confirmed that there are no Muggles nearby. Proper training is required to travel by Apparition, and one must pass the Apparition test administered by the Ministry of Magic and obtain an Apparition license to use it legally; otherwise, it is considered a violation of the law...
"This is a booklet issued by the Ministry of Magic. They will give it to you when you start learning Apparition, and the content is quite practical. I suggest you memorize it; it shouldn't be difficult for you." Mr. Mog seemed to guess what Albert was thinking and smiled, "Well, there are indeed quite a few people in the wizarding world who haven't passed the Apparition test. Of course, even if you don't pass the test, you can still Apparate."
Speaking of which, Mr. Mog shrugged and reminded them, "Of course, it's best not to be complacent. If you cause trouble, you'll have to deal with hefty fines from the Ministry, and if you cause enough trouble, you might even end up spending some time in Azkaban."
The booklet clearly stated that wizards in Britain needed to take a test with the Magical Transportation Department before they could Apparate legally.
Of course, not many people took these rules seriously.
As for the hefty fines?
Well, if you were unlucky enough to splinch yourself, you might not even make it for the Ministry to come knocking on your door.
The real reason the Ministry required a license for Apparition, Albert suspected, was to prevent wizards from Apparating into Muggle banks and stealing money.
Hmm, as far as Albert knew, the thief Mundungus Fletcher often did this sort of thing, although he didn't target Muggle banks.
"Charlie Weasley, during his first exam, Apparated five miles south of his intended destination and ended up on the head of a poor old lady who was out shopping." Albert shared a funny story he knew, smiling at the two others.
At that time, Charlie had been mercilessly teased by Fred, George, and the entire Quidditch team.
"This is not uncommon; it's a result of not getting enough practice." Mr. Mog looked at Albert and said, "Although I don't know how you mastered Apparition, I still suggest you practice it more to get used to the feeling."
"Is it difficult?" Isabelle asked, raising an eyebrow.
"It's strict," Mr. Mog replied as he stood up and walked towards the entrance of the room. "Most students need to take the test twice to pass, and some even have to come back after graduation to retake the exam." Turning his head back to the two, he continued, "Well, now that you've read the booklet, let's start practicing Apparition. Generally, the shorter the distance, the easier it is to succeed."
"Isabelle, you need to Apparate from here to inside that circle."
Mr. Mog led the two of them outside the cottage to a clearing where a wooden circle had been placed, clearly put there by the house-elf, whose footprints were still visible in the snow.
Mr. Mog turned to Albert and said, "Why don't you demonstrate for Isabelle first?"
"Okay!"
The sound of his voice was quickly drowned out by a loud crack, and Albert suddenly appeared inside the wooden circle.
It was perfect, and he hadn't splinched himself either. However, it seemed like he hadn't quite adapted to the side effects of Apparition yet, which was why, despite its convenience, Apparition wasn't the most popular form of travel in the wizarding world.
"After a few more practices, you'll be ready to take the exam." Mr. Mog nodded in agreement. Although it became more difficult to control Apparition over longer distances, he still had great faith in Albert's abilities.
"Your turn!" Albert stood next to Mr. Mog and smiled at Isabelle.
Isabelle began to spin elegantly in place, and then... she lost her balance and fell into the snow.
"Shut up, don't laugh," she said as she climbed up, glaring at Albert, who was doing his best to suppress his laughter.
"You can ask Uncle Mog to take you through Apparition a few times, and then try it yourself. That's how I learned," Albert suggested, thinking it would be best for Isabelle to experience Apparition first-hand, as it would benefit her greatly in learning this magic quickly.
"I'll succeed," the young girl said as she brushed the snow off her clothes.
The second attempt wasn't much better than the first, and the third attempt was just as disastrous. However, on the fourth try, Isabelle finally succeeded.
Well, she succeeded halfway, at least.
Albert noticed some of Isabelle's red hair left behind in the snow, which was quite noticeable.
"I did it," Isabelle said, feeling a bit queasy but still excited.
"No, you splinched yourself," Albert said, pointing to the hair on the ground. "Fortunately, it's just hair."
"That's not good at all," Isabelle pouted, feeling upset that she had lost a chunk of her hair.
"You're already doing great. It's rare for someone to succeed in such a short time," Mr. Mog consoled casually as he walked over and waved his wand. With a loud bang, Isabelle's red hair was restored.
"Splinching usually happens when your determination falters. You must always keep your focus on your destination and not panic..." Mr. Mog turned to Albert again, "Perhaps you can explore the area on your own. Oh, and don't go too far, and don't Apparate into crowded places."
"No, I'll just stay here with her," Albert said, not planning to leave. This could very well be one of Isabelle's rare embarrassing moments.
"You should take some time to get used to Apparition. Remember not to go too far from Hogsmeade, or you might get into trouble," Mr. Mog reminded him.
"Go on, go!" Isabelle waved, urging Albert to leave.
