Chapter 592: The Department of Mysteries
Chapter 592: The Department of Mysteries
At 5 a.m. the next morning, just as the first hint of light appeared, Kyle was already awakened by the pecking of several owls at his window.
He yawned, sat up, and rubbed his face to try and wake himself up. It wasn't until a few minutes later that he gradually became aware of his appointment at the Ministry that day.
Diana also seemed to have something on her mind, as he had to leave a few hours before his shift at the Ministry started.
With this in mind, Kyle quickly jumped out of bed, got dressed, and went downstairs to the living room for breakfast.
At that moment, Chris placed a plate of fried ham and several slices of bread on the table.
"I was just about to call you," Chris said, "What would you like to drink? How about some pumpkin juice?"
"Sure," Kyle replied.
He sat down next to Chris and began spreading raspberry jam on his bread.
"No need to rush," Chris brought over a large cup of pumpkin juice, "We can Apparate to London later, which will save us a lot of time."
Kyle nodded without saying a word.
He had thought about it all last night but still couldn't figure out why Diana wanted him to go to the Department of Mysteries. It wasn't until the wee hours of the morning that he fell into a hazy sleep, and now he was feeling sleepy.
About half an hour later, when the sky began to brighten, the two of them left the house.
"Ready?" Chris extended his arm and said, "Hold on tight, we're about to depart."
Kyle placed his hand on Chris's shoulder.
The next second, a familiar squeezing sensation spread throughout his body, and when Kyle opened his eyes again, he found himself standing in an old record shop.
The shop owner, seemingly unfazed by the sudden appearance of the two, glanced up at them briefly.
"Chris, you're here so early today?"
"Hey, Rod," Chris greeted him, "I have no choice; there are still many reports to write."
"Those people who want to raise magical creatures again?" Rod understood, "Ever since the Triwizard Tournament ended, everyone seems to have become interested in raising magical creatures. I bet you've been busy lately."
"Yeah, I just saved a guy who wanted to raise a mermaid monster yesterday," Chris sighed, "I wonder when they'll realize that not every magical creature is as docile and cute as a Flobberworm."
"That might be a bit difficult," Rod said, then turned to Kyle, "You are... sorry, this is the internal entrance for Ministry employees. The visitor's room is on the street in front."
"This is my son, Kyle," Chris quickly explained, "He's coming to the Ministry for an inquiry today at 9 a.m. in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement."
"Oh... is he the Kyle who won the Triwizard Tournament?" Rod, who had been sleepy-eyed a moment ago, suddenly became alert and looked at Kyle curiously.
"I remember he was the youngest champion... truly remarkable."
Then, as if remembering something, Rod tapped the notebook next to him, and it automatically turned to the latest page, which he glanced at.
"Yes, that's right. He received a warning letter seven days ago for using a spell in the Cauldron Pub..."
"Wait, the Cauldron Pub?"
Rod's voice suddenly rose, and he looked at the notebook's content in disbelief.
"Merlin's beard, this is the first time I've encountered such a ridiculous reason. If they don't want spells used in the Cauldron Pub, why don't they just take away their wands?"
"Probably because no one would agree to that," Chris said.
"Of course no one would agree," Rod chuckled as he closed the notebook and looked at Kyle again, "Well, kid, in my opinion, you haven't done anything wrong, so there's no need to be nervous.
"Amelia, from the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, is a fair person, and I'm sure she won't penalize you for such a ridiculous reason."
"Thank you," Kyle said with a smile.
It was clear that this wizard was a good person.
"Can we go in now?" Chris asked, "Sorry, I'm a bit pressed for time."
"Of course, go ahead."
Rod tapped the counter with his wand, and the display case next to it immediately extended to the left and right, revealing a passage.
"Thanks," Chris said.
He led Kyle into the passage.
Behind the passage was a long corridor lined with Floo Network fireplaces, but at this early hour, all the fireplaces were extinguished.
In the middle of the corridor, a person was standing there waiting for them.
"The timing is just right," Diana said as she approached Chris. "Wait until 8:30, then come to the floor of the Department of Mysteries to pick him up."
"Okay," Chris replied.
"Follow me now."
Diana led Kyle away from the fireplace corridor and into the elevator.
There was no one else there, only a cold, mechanical voice that occasionally announced the floor they were on.
"Remember, don't run around or look around aimlessly. Just follow me."
Inside the elevator, Diana instructed, "And no matter what you see in there, don't tell anyone else about it afterward, including the Weasley brothers and the girl named Cona."
"Yeah, I understand," Kyle nodded.
As soon as he finished speaking, Kyle heard a cold voice.
"Department of Mysteries."
"We've arrived," Diana was the first to step out of the elevator, and Kyle quickly followed.
He had been here once before, but that time he had turned left after exiting the elevator. This time, however, he followed Diana through the empty corridor and arrived at the simple door at the end.
"Remember, don't look around or wander off," Diana reminded him again before opening the door and stepping inside.
Behind the door was a large circular room, as if it had been washed with ink. The ceiling, floor, and walls were all black, with branch-like candles adorning the walls, but the flames were blue and cold, without a hint of warmth.
The doors on the walls were also black and unmarked, all appearing identical.
But Diana merely glanced at them and headed straight for a door at the front.
Next, Kyle felt like he had returned to the final task of the Triwizard Tournament; the place was like a maze.
Everywhere he looked, the colors, architecture, and doors were all the same. If he relaxed for a moment, he might forget where he had come from.
After walking for almost ten minutes, Kyle finally saw something different.
It was a huge water tank that filled the entire room, and occasionally, he could see objects that resembled small stars floating inside.
He had seen this before during the interrogation of Peter Pettigrew. Diana had used it to discover that Peter was the Keeper of Secrets.
However, at that time, the water tank was only as big as a table, much smaller than what he was seeing now.
Ahead was a room enveloped in a golden air current. As Kyle walked through it, he constantly heard a ticking sound, like the sound of a clock's hands or a water droplet in an hourglass.
It might have been an illusion, but as Kyle walked, he suddenly felt like he had grown taller. His clothes, which had fit perfectly before, now felt tight around the shoulders, and his wrists were exposed.
But within a few seconds, the clothes became loose again, and his pant legs dragged on the ground, almost tripping him.
When Diana opened the door at the end, and Kyle stepped over the threshold, everything returned to normal in an instant.
At the same time, Diana also stopped and did not continue forward.
"This is the place," she said.
Kyle looked up and realized they were in a huge cave-like area.
Surrounding them were stone benches that resembled steps, steeply angled downward, similar to the Quidditch World Cup stadium. They were standing at the very top.
From here, they could see a tall stone platform with a stone archway standing on it, looking ancient and worn.
"Come on."
Diana pulled Kyle forward, taking a step.
In just one step, they crossed the rows of steps and appeared on the stone platform.
Apparition?
No, it couldn't be. Apparition wouldn't be this quiet.
But what could it be...
Kyle was naturally curious, but seeing Diana's serious expression, he held back from asking.
"Come this way."
Diana led Kyle to the center of the stone archway.
The stone door rippled with a water-like wave, like an upright surface, and behind it was a slowly drifting white mist, obscuring what lay within.
