Chapter 592: The Calamity Pirates with a Different Style
Chapter 592: The Calamity Pirates with a Different Style
In the vast ocean, islands are as numerous as the stars, and many of them remain nameless.
Being nameless not only signifies their obscurity to the general public but also implies that these islands are isolated, cut off from the outside world, with little to no interaction.
Take, for instance, a particular island where half of the buildings in a coastal village have been reduced to charred ruins, and wisps of smoke still linger in the air.
Adults sit dejectedly at their doorsteps, holding children with either a bewildered look or tear-stained faces, while some stare blankly at the corpses nearby, their eyes devoid of emotion.
These people had resisted a group of self-proclaimed 'pirates' and paid the ultimate price.
Although the guards had arrived, it seemed the situation was far from over.
Some guards, clad in leather armor and armed with spears and short pikes, dragged out sacks from the relatively intact houses, containing supplies and valuables that the pirates hadn't managed to loot.
As the guards moved, they passed by a middle-aged man lying in a pool of fresh blood, his life taken by the very guards who were supposed to protect him.
He was the village chief, killed for trying to stop the guards' looting.
Paradoxically, the guards seemed unafraid of the pirates, even boasting that they would settle the score with them.
The pirates hadn't taken much, but the guards had thoroughly plundered the village.
A young boy's gaze shifted from the village chief to the corpses and then to the guards, before finally settling on the vast sea. For a fleeting moment, he felt a longing for the ocean.
He wondered if going to sea would mean an end to the guards' raids and if becoming a pirate would spare him from being robbed.
The vast blue sea, with its rolling waves, suddenly revealed a mast rising from the horizon. Soon, the entire ship came into view.
"Dad, look! A ship is coming!" the boy exclaimed, pointing at the sea.
Everyone turned to look, and the ship approached swiftly, quickly coming into full view.
"A black flag! A skull! It's a pirate ship!" they cried out in unison.
"Pirates?"
The guards exchanged glances, their faces contorting into sinister smiles as they licked their lips. They all burst into laughter.
"Perfect! Let's go! Let those pirates come ashore, and we'll kill them all. That way, we won't have to lift a finger."
"Yeah, let's go!"
Just as the guards were about to leave, a little girl, huddled beside her parents' corpses, turned her head and asked in a daze, "Aren't you supposed to protect us? You took our things."
"What are you talking about, you little brat!"
The guard sneered, "We only protect the island lord. We don't care about the rest. Go get killed by the pirates and join your parents!"
"You bastards!"
The little girl's eyes turned red with anger, and she picked up a stone, ready to charge at them.
The leading guard scoffed and drew his spear from his back, intending to impale the charging girl.
Just as the spear was about to pierce her chest, a shadow suddenly covered the guard's head and then crashed down.
A loud boom echoed, and a cloud of dust rose where the guard had been standing, causing the girl to stumble backward and sit down.
"Oh? Found an armed enemy as soon as I arrived," a hoarse, sinister voice said from within the smoke. A tall figure emerged, casting a menacing silhouette before the girl's eyes.
"Perfect, let's deal with them together."
The figure spread its arms, creating a shockwave that dispersed the smoke, and its fists struck out, instantly caving in the skulls of two nearby guards as if they were made of paper.
As the smoke cleared, the figure became fully visible—a muscular man with yellow hair and a twisted, menacing expression, his tongue lolling out.
"Get him! He's alone!" the other guards shouted, drawing their weapons and charging forward.
Bellamy bared his teeth and clenched his fists, "I may be alone, but I am strong. You may be many, but you are weak."
Thud!
The spear thrust at him was effortlessly deflected by Bellamy's fists, and he stuck out his tongue at the stunned guards, "A lion doesn't need much effort to deal with chicks."
Bellamy's leg transformed into a spring, and he stomped the ground, sending a powerful shockwave through the group of guards.
Bang!!
With a single kick, he sent them flying, and they crashed to the ground, lifeless, their eyes wide open.
"Boring," Bellamy shook his leg and returned to his normal state, then turned to the little girl behind him. He looked her up and down and asked,
"Hey, little girl, what's the name of this island?"
"Who are you? Were you with those pirates earlier? Are you going to kill us too?" the little girl asked, her eyes wide with shock.
Bellamy scanned the pitiful villagers and picked up a nearby sack, tossing it to the girl. "These are yours. We're returning what was taken from you."
The ship docked, and the pirates descended the gangway, unloading the supplies they had taken from the previous pirate ship and placing them in the center of the village.
"You're not with the same group as those pirates, are you?"
The little girl's eyes glistened with a newfound light, and a tear rolled down her cheek. "Why? Why didn't you come sooner? If you had come earlier, my parents..."
She stood up and shouted at Bellamy, "My parents wouldn't have died!"
Bang! Bellamy kicked the little girl, knocking her to the ground.
He loomed over her, his face twisted in a sinister smile. "Do you not understand? We're not the Navy. We're pirates, and we do as we please. The Governor's rule is to ignore the weak, not to spare them. Don't get it twisted; if you anger me, I'll kill you without a second thought!"
He turned to his crew, his voice loud and clear. "This island falls within the Calamity Pirates' territory, which means you're under their rule. According to the rules, no one can rob you, so we're returning your belongings. But in return..."
"Take us to your leader, the master of this island!"
The villagers looked at Bellamy, then at the neatly stacked supplies. After a moment of silence, the child nestled in his father's arms pointed in a direction, "Over there!"
"Excellent!"
Bellamy nodded and threw a bag of coins to the child. "Take this as a reward. I don't care if you know what it's for or not, but it'll definitely come in handy later! Hahahaha!"
Bellamy laughed heartily and led his crew in the direction the child had indicated.
"Hey, keep an eye on the ship!"
Sakis, holding a large saber, passed by the villagers and glared at the adult holding the child. "If there's any trouble, I'll personally cut your legs off!"
"Yes, yes! I understand!"
The adult trembled and nodded repeatedly.
The island, unnamed and situated on a dormant volcano, was home to a local lord who resided in its center. Bellamy and Sakis beheaded the lord with their sabers, looted his wealth, and left triumphantly.
This wasn't an isolated incident; it was a common occurrence in the first half of the New World.
In the first half of the New World, a Navy warship approached an undiscovered island.
The island was serene, like a utopia, with abundant resources that allowed its inhabitants to be self-sufficient. Occasionally, foreign visitors would arrive, politely trading for supplies and leaving behind sparkling gems and gold.
But now, uninvited guests had arrived.
A Navy colonel with a mousy mustache and a sharp, pointed face led a group of Navy soldiers onto the island. Amidst the villagers' terrified gazes, they reached the town and shouted at the residents, "Hand over all your money! We're the Navy, and you're not under the jurisdiction of any World Government affiliate. In short, you have no rights! If you don't pay up, I'll arrest you all and sell you into slavery!"
"Colonel, the first half of the New World belongs to the Calamity Pirates," a lieutenant whispered. "Shouldn't we be more cautious?"
The colonel scoffed, "What's there to be afraid of? There's no flag here, so the Calamity Pirates won't even know. Besides, the Navy and pirates are natural enemies!"
"They're all people without rights. The law won't protect them. We'll take their treasures, capture them, and sell them as slaves in Shabondy. That'll make this island empty, and no one will be the wiser."
"But what if we're discovered?" the lieutenant asked, still concerned.
"How could we possibly be discovered? The Calamity Pirates aren't gods, and there are so many Navy soldiers. How would they know who did it? I'm just a colonel; even if I encountered one of the Four Emperors, I'd wait for them to leave before filing a report."
The colonel shook his head, "Enough talk. Carry out the order!"
"Yes, sir!" The lieutenant saluted and went to command the troops.
Not every member of the Navy, the world's dominant force, was genuinely committed to protecting the citizens.
There are always those who line their pockets, individuals who, with a modicum of strength and a stroke of luck, rise to the ranks of naval officers and then exploit their power to enrich themselves.
When it comes to dealing with pirates, it depends on who the pirate is.
Small-time pirates are fair game for building up merits, but they turn a blind eye to the mighty ones.
As for the Four Emperors, they don't have the guts to confront them.
However, when it comes to profiting from the Four Emperors, they not only have the audacity but also a substantial appetite for it.
For instance, patrolling the territories of the World Government's affiliated nations in the first half of the New World is a lucrative opportunity. Finding islands outside the jurisdiction of these nations and engaging in human trafficking is a profitable venture.
Especially after the death of Vice Admiral T-Bone, although there was no news in the newspapers or even within the Navy about his cause of death, some people could still guess what had happened.
The Cross Guild had bounties on them, and just like the Navy's bounties on pirates, these bounties were open to anyone worldwide. Anyone could become a bounty hunter as long as they brought in the heads.
This colonel, with his one-star rank, was worth one hundred million Belly!
This was the standard price for all Navy colonels and vice admirals.
Rear admirals had three stars, vice admirals had five, and the renowned elite vice admirals had six or seven stars, with some exceptional ones even earning a crown.
That's one billion Belly! Admirals had three crowns or even more.
Admiral Yellow Monkey had four crowns.
And their fleet admiral, Akainu, was worth five crowns.
Their bounties were comparable to the highest bounty currently offered for the Calamities, just two hundred million short!
With such a valuable bounty on their heads, some Navy personnel dared not appear alone in crowded places, especially those who knew they had committed numerous atrocities.
Being constantly on someone's mind, who would bother protecting civilians? Making money was the top priority. Once he had amassed enough wealth, he planned to resign from the Navy, return to his hometown, bribe the nobility with some money, and either become a sheriff or buy a small island to live as a wealthy man.
"Why are you still standing there? Get moving!"
The colonel, lost in his pleasant thoughts, smiled unconsciously, but he quickly realized something was amiss. His subordinates were still standing there, seemingly disobeying his orders.
"Yes, Colonel."
The lieutenant colonel's face turned pale as he pointed to the sea, "It's the Calamities' flag!"
"What?!"
The colonel's eyes widened as he looked towards the rear, but just as he turned, he heard a series of cannon blasts. A row of cannonballs flew from the sea, accurately hitting their warship. One of the cannonballs exploded near the stacked gunpowder next to the cannon, triggering a series of explosions.
Half of the warship was destroyed.
"Oh? We've spotted a warship!"
The pirate ship flying the Calamities' flag quickly approached. Paru, with a sinister smile, clanged the small shields on his arms together, producing a crisp sound, "They dare to enter our territory. Are the Navy looking for a fight?"
"Lord Paru, the Navy is in the coastal town. Let's go and take them out!" A burly pirate beside him drew a large hammer from his back.
"No, no, no."
Paru extended his index finger and shook it, "Not us, just me. I'll take them out alone."
He retracted his finger and extended his thumb, pointing at himself. He bared his gleaming teeth, revealing a foolish grin, "Because I'm the invincible and dashing Lord Paru. I have high defense and exceptional skills. How about that? I'm quite the veteran, aren't I?"
"..."
The burly pirate turned away without saying a word.
"Get the ship closer!"
Paru ignored him and shouted, "I'll take out these Navy men myself! The first half of the New World is the Governor's territory, and everyone is under the Governor's protection. The Navy has no authority here! In this place, we are the ones who uphold justice!"
Dealing with a group of Navy men didn't require everyone's involvement. Paru's defense alone was enough to withstand any attack. Before long, all the Navy men were lying on the ground, captured by the pirates who had rushed over.
As for the residents of the port town, Paru not only refrained from harming them but also, uncharacteristically for a pirate, took protective measures. He returned the valuables the Navy had just looted, item by item, to their rightful owners.
Unlike Bellamy, Paru was more law-abiding and could treat these people with kindness.
As for the ruler of this island, it depended on whether they knew their place.
If they surrendered their power, he might even forgo looting and simply rule over the island.
The Calamities' pirates were a diverse bunch, each with their unique style and approach.
Some were evil, some were righteous, some were generous, and some were greedy.
But one thing was certain: they were all pirates, belonging to the Sage's crew.
