Chapter 591: Yu Meitung's Suitor
Chapter 591: Yu Meitung's Suitor
On July 26th, Zong Shimeng emerged from her confinement period after giving birth. Considering this was her last child, she decided to practice the traditional post-partum recovery method of "double confinement" for the sake of her health.
The first thing Zong Shimeng did after her confinement was to bathe and wash her hair thoroughly. After a leisurely breakfast and a short rest, the people she had hired arrived to do her makeup and nails. Once her beauty regimen was complete, she happily returned to her room to choose an outfit and accessories for the day.
Lu Jiaxin was surprised to see her in a beige dress, her nails painted and manicured. "You've done your makeup and nails. Won't your mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law have something to say about that?"
Zong Shimeng smiled and replied, "My mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law returned to their ancestral home in Fujian a few days ago to visit the graves of their ancestors. They left my mother to help me look after the baby."
Having hired a nanny and a childcare specialist, along with her mother's watchful eye, Zong was confident in her decision not to breastfeed this child, just as she had with her previous three. "What a coincidence that they returned to their hometown in Fujian."
Zong Shimeng's face lit up with a smile. "Three days ago, my grandmother-in-law had a dream about my great-grandfather. In the dream, he appeared in tattered clothes, and she also saw the house leaking in several places. Worried, she insisted on returning to their ancestral home, and my father-in-law relented, asking Zhifeng and my mother-in-law to accompany her on the trip."
The elderly often long for their homeland, and before he passed away, her great-grandfather had expressed his wish to be buried in their ancestral home. After the reform and opening up, his wish was honored, and he was laid to rest in their hometown.
"Well, at least you have some peace and freedom for now," Lu Jiaxin remarked.
Zong Shimeng laughed. "Yes, I hope they stay there for a while longer so I can enjoy some more relaxed days."
Yu Meitung interjected, "It would be great if you could move out with the children. Living with those two old ladies who are set in their ways can be quite stifling."
"My mother-in-law is a bit old-fashioned and doesn't approve of some of the modern ways," Zong Shimeng acknowledged with a smile. "She also believes that having many children is a blessing. But she's actually a kind person and doesn't deliberately make things difficult for me."
Changing the subject, Lu Jiaxin suggested, "Let's go and see the new arrivals at Patek Philippe."
The three women strolled around and ended up buying quite a few items. Zong Shimeng and Lu Jiaxin bought whatever they liked, while Yu Meitung focused on work-appropriate clothing.
As a top VIP customer at many luxury brand stores, Zong Shimeng enjoyed discounts and gifts. Yu Meitung had her purchase the items, after which Zong would reimburse her.
Yu Meitung had an interesting approach to spending as well. She was frugal when she could be but also knew when to splurge. Both Lu Jiaxin and Zong Shimeng admired her for this, as most people cared too much about saving face to do the same.
After tiring themselves out, they rested at a coffee shop, sipping coffee and chatting.
Zong Shimeng smiled as she asked, "Jiaxin, back in April, everyone thought you were crazy when Xin Xin Property sold the luxury apartments at Regent Court. But the market took a sharp turn, and prices plunged within just over two weeks."
She had also purchased an apartment there, which she had since rented out. Although she had bought it at a price more than 40% lower than the current market value, she was confident that the property market would recover within a couple of years, so she wasn't concerned about the temporary loss.
Yu Meitung's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Jiaxin, I heard that you made over 3 billion yuan from this deal. Is that true?"
Unlike stock investments, where prices and quantities could be hidden, property transactions were a matter of public record, making it easy for anyone to calculate the profits. The only reason the exact figures weren't common knowledge was that Xin Xin Property was not a publicly traded company; otherwise, their finances would have been disclosed.
Lu Jiaxin laughed. "The media tends to exaggerate. It wasn't that much. And I haven't even touched that money yet—I've already reinvested it all into buying more properties."
"You must have made far more than 3 billion from all those transactions," Zong Shimeng said with a smile.
Lu Jiaxin promised, "Next time there's an opportunity like this, I'll definitely bring you two along so you can earn some money for a handbag too."
Lu Jiaxin explained, "It's not that I didn't want to tell you, but Nie Zhan also wasn't sure. He felt that the housing market was rising too quickly and predicted a market correction. I decided to sell some of the properties, subscribing to the belief that it's better to be safe than sorry."
Zong Shimeng and Yu Meitung accepted this explanation. If she could have foreseen this situation, she would have sold off more than just three properties and profited even more.
"It's fine," Zong Shimeng said. "When the time comes, just let me know, and I'll decide. Since I'm in it, whether I make or lose money is my own business."
Yu Meitung quickly added, "Jiaxin, don't leave me out!"
Lu Jiaxin smiled in response.
Zong Shimeng brought up the topic of the Nie family again. The news of Nie Jing Shu accidentally killing someone and getting arrested had been reported. Some media outlets were sensationalizing the story, spinning it as a case of a man's righteous fury on behalf of his beloved. The Nie family chose to ignore these outrageous rumors.
Thinking of the Nie family's current situation, Zong Shimeng couldn't help but sigh, "Children really need to be taught well, or they might end up ruining their own lives without careful guidance."
It was one thing for him to be foolish and manipulated, but he had also dragged Nie Manlin into the mess. With such an unreliable son, she wouldn't wish for peace in her next life.
Yu Meitung, who didn't even have a partner yet, had no interest in the topic of babies, and the conversation seemed far removed from her concerns.
Lu Jiaxin feigned a gloomy expression as she said, "We were all busy with work in April and May, and we just wanted to take a few days off to relax and travel. We had everything planned, but the day before our departure, something like this happened, and our vacation plans were ruined again."
Yu Meitung couldn't help but feel sympathetic, "Jiaxin, how many times has this happened now?"
Lu Jiaxin shook her head, "I've lost count. Anyway, he's become a serial canceller in my book. Next time we plan a trip, we shouldn't count him in."
Zong Shimeng couldn't hold back her laughter. It was true that every time the two of them planned a vacation, something would come up with the Nie family, preventing them from going. It was almost uncanny.
Not wanting Lu Jiaxin to feel too down, Yu Meitung decided to share some news of her own, "Actually, there's a guy pursuing me. He graduated from the Finance department at HKU, and he's not bad-looking, but his family background is a bit lacking."
There was a hint of regret in her voice, indicating that she was quite taken with the man himself but was hesitant due to his external circumstances.
"What's his family background like?" Lu Jiaxin asked.
"He's the second child in a family of six," Yu Meitung explained. "He rents a place by himself, while his older brother, who is married with two kids, lives with their parents. Their home isn't very big—it's a 700-square-foot public rental flat."
"Oh, and his father has a severe case of rheumatism from years of hard work, and his mother had a car accident in the past, which left her right foot not very agile, although it doesn't affect her daily life."
As soon as Zong Shimeng heard this, she felt that it wouldn't work out, "What about his younger siblings?"
"His older brother dropped out of high school and started working, and the three younger siblings are still in school," Yu Meitung replied.
Lu Jiaxin smiled and said, "Families with many siblings can practically film a family drama when they all get married and have kids."
"What do you mean by a family drama?"
Lu Jiaxin explained, "A family drama is a television series that focuses on the narrative of a family. It reflects real-life issues, ethical dilemmas, and the characteristics of an era by portraying the development, changes, and conflicts within a family over a period of time."
Zong Shimeng couldn't help but laugh out loud. This girl had a roundabout way of speaking, "Meitung, what she means is that such a large family will inevitably encounter all sorts of situations in the future, and she's worried that you might not be able to handle it."
