Chapter 591: Lanchi and Sybeline's Candlelit Dinner
Chapter 591: Lanchi and Sybeline's Candlelit Dinner
The air on the terrace garden grew quiet.
Both individuals wore expressions of embarrassment.
Only the gentle harp music, seemingly emanating from nowhere, filled the silence, accompanying the gentle summer breeze under the night sky.
Sybeline feigned composure, but her pursed lips trembled slightly as she recalled the events that had just transpired. She felt tears welling up in her eyes.
She had just made a scene in front of the entire Ekelith Academy... no, the news would probably spread throughout the Kingdom of Horton.
Sybeline dared not imagine the reaction within the academy.
However, she was certain that her and Lanchi's situation would be the topic of wild gossip and speculation within the school, especially after Headmaster Loren's scandal, which served as a cautionary tale.
This was often how things went between her and Lanchi.
Most of the time, they got along splendidly.
But occasionally, something unexpected would happen, and they would suddenly become aware that their relationship wasn't quite as simple, that they might have crossed a line or, conversely, hadn't crossed any line at all. In those moments, even the most basic interactions became awkward, like a car shifting from automatic to manual transmission, stuttering and halting.
Usually, without overthinking things, they could talk about anything and everything, not concerning themselves with the fact that they were of different sexes. Their relationship was, in essence, a good one.
Thankfully, on the summer terrace, with the night sky stretched out before them, there was plenty to look at besides each other, giving them a chance to regain their composure.
Finally...
"Lanchi."
Sybeline spoke up, her gaze lowered.
"Hmm?"
Lanchi turned to look at Sybeline beside him.
Usually, he would wait for Sybeline to calm down a bit before speaking up to comfort her. But this time, Sybeline had taken the initiative.
"Actually, I'm not the type to blush easily," she began, her voice steady. "Since I was little, I've been used to being the center of attention, perhaps because of my half-demon blood. I've always been able to maintain my calm and composure. Even when I want to show a more sensitive, human side, part of me wonders if it's just an act."
As she spoke, she slowly lifted her head to meet his gaze.
There was no need to say more.
Her flushed cheeks said it all—
The reason she changed was because of him.
Row after row of meticulously trimmed exotic flowers from the Demon Realm swayed gently in the courtyard breeze, their subtle glow whispering the secrets of the night sky.
Having spoken her truth, Sybeline seemed to relax, leaning against the terrace railing as she gazed out at the estate and the sea beyond.
"When I first met you, I thought you were a cool, distant girl," Lanchi said, her eyes following Sybeline's gaze into the distance. "You were a reliable teammate and kind to me, but I always felt that it wasn't easy to get close to you."
She continued, her arm resting on the stone railing, "But then, before I knew it, I got used to having you by my side every day, and now I can't even imagine what it would be like if you weren't there."
They had returned to their usual dynamic.
Chatting casually, they occasionally glanced at each other, as if pondering some unresolved question, the earlier awkwardness completely forgotten.
So absorbed were they in their conversation that they didn't notice the door to the third-floor terrace opening behind them. Cat Boss had used telekinetic magic to push it open, calling them in for dinner.
Cat Boss stepped out onto the wooden terrace, a confused look on his face as he watched the two chatting figures.
While this was how Lanchi and Sybeline typically interacted, he couldn't shake the feeling that today, their shoulders seemed just a little bit closer together.
However, judging by the time it took to cook, Sybeline had only been awake for a short while. Lanchi had just led her down from the upper floors, and it was unlikely that anything would have progressed between them in such a short time.
"Meow, meow, meow, I hate to interrupt, but it's getting late."
Cat Boss never disturbed the young man and woman when they were talking, unless it was very late and time for dinner.
Moreover, Sybeline had slept through most of the day and had not eaten lunch. Going without food for so long was not good for her health.
Yet, the two of them seemed oblivious to his presence.
"Meow..."
Cat Boss directed his gaze towards the starry sky, where the pair were deep in conversation by the terrace railing.
The bustling noises from the restaurant below could be heard from where they stood, and it was indeed challenging to make themselves heard from such a distance.
"Meow!"
Cat Boss drew closer, meowing from time to time and deliberately making various noises on the floor, stopping just short of knocking over the chairs on the terrace.
He finally confirmed that the two were completely absorbed in their conversation and oblivious to their surroundings.
Sybeline's face still bore a faint trace of crimson, like makeup, enhancing her beauty.
And Lanchi, at this moment, was no longer the epitome of dignity; he laughed heartily from time to time, like a spirited young man who had found treasure.
Cat Boss sighed and turned his head away.
He walked away, deciding not to disturb the couple any further.
There was a table and chairs in the terrace garden anyway, so he could play waiter again and bring their meal out to them.
Before long, in the twilight, one could see a pure black, textured dining table in the garden, set with candlesticks and a sumptuous dinner, thanks to the scurrying figure of Little Black Coal Ball.
The light danced in the corner of the terrace, reflecting off the handmade ice, the gleaming wine bottles, and the steam rising from the freshly served dishes, making everything even more dazzling.
Cat Boss ran to their feet.
"Dinner is served, meow!"
The little black cat tilted his head up and addressed the two with his soft voice.
At the same time, Lanchi and Sybeline, as if awakening from a dream, lowered their heads and noticed the cat boss' dark silhouette and the bright, shining eyes that stood out in the night.
Turning around, they discovered that the table on the terrace had been beautifully set.
The open-air, suspended scenery became the backdrop to their dining experience, and only now did they fully realize that they were in a palace restaurant by the glittering bay.
"Thank you, Cat Boss."
Lanchi and Sybeline happily expressed their gratitude to Cat Boss as they made their way to the table and took their seats on opposite sides of the square table.
As night fell, the stars seemed to reflect on the table, giving the scene a surreal yet dreamlike hue.
"Guests, please take a look at this first, meow."
Cat Boss used his telekinetic magic to float a black cowhide menu with a rhombus pattern onto the table, professionally and ceremoniously presenting them with a preview of the evening's menu.
Lanchi unfolded the menu and placed it in front of Sybeline so that she could see it.
On the table was an appetizer of freshly grilled beef cut into small pieces, sprinkled with herbs, fried salt grass leaves, and transparent pear slices, then arranged on thin, black bread.
There was also a dish of thick-cut venison, seasoned with salt and black pepper, pan-fried to a crispy exterior and tender interior, layered with black truffle slices between the meat slices.
"Isn't this the dinner we had at the Demon King's restaurant? Cat Boss, when did you learn to cook Demon Realm cuisine?"
Sybeline had only glanced at half of the menu when she realized what Lanchi had asked Cat Boss to prepare for their dinner.
