Chapter 589: In Search of a Seed
Chapter 589: In Search of a Seed
Within the Spirit Herb Garden of his cave abode, the highest grade spirit herbs Lu Chen had managed to cultivate thus far were all of the sixth grade. These included the Phoenix Tree, the Yuan Magnetic Spirit Wood, the Purple Pole Thunder Fruit, and the mysterious Savage Bone Demon Seed.
And even these were gathered through great effort, a testament to the rarity of seventh-grade spirit herbs.
Lu Chen's heart stirred with excitement as he summoned the Demon Ghost Vine, instructing it, "Search thoroughly, and see if you can find a single spirit seed produced by this green vine!"
"There will be a generous reward if you succeed!"
The Demon Ghost Vine sensed Lu Chen's thoughts, and its ashen-white vines sprouted countless tendrils that crawled and coiled upwards, sniffing around the green vine intently.
"It's not easy to find even one..."
After a long while of fruitless searching, Lu Chen sighed softly.
Whether in his past life or the present, rare seeds were always hard to come by, requiring great effort to obtain the desired ones.
"Ah, Tohru's seed-finding efforts aren't going as well as I'd hoped..."
Just as his thoughts began to wander, the countless tendrils of the Demon Ghost Vine suddenly retracted and converged at the edge of the Thunder Pool.
"Are you saying that at the bottom of this Thunder Pool, there's something that shares the same origin as the Green Thunder Vine?"
Lu Chen's heart leaped as he perceived the thoughts conveyed by the Demon Ghost Vine.
He peered deep into the Thunder Pool, his eyes unable to penetrate the murky depths that hid countless powerful thunderbolts.
Just then, a tendril of the Demon Ghost Vine shot out, extending towards the depths of the pool.
A sizzling sound filled the air as silver-white lightning crackled along the surface of the vine like writhing snakes.
The countless thunderbolts caused the vine to tremble incessantly.
"Do I need to go down there myself?"
Lu Chen gazed into the abyssal Thunder Pool, hesitating about whether to venture into its depths in search of the spirit seed.
A strange laughter sounded in his ear, and the Thunder Ghost approached, sending a thought to Lu Chen.
"You're saying you can protect the Demon Ghost Vine as it enters the depths of the Thunder Pool?"
The Thunder Ghost nodded vigorously.
"Alright, let's give it a try."
Since Lu Chen himself lacked the ability to sense the spirit seed, he had no choice but to let the Demon Ghost Vine explore the Thunder Pool on its own.
The Thunder Ghost raised its hands high and slammed them onto the fleshy tumor at its waist, creating a booming thunderclap.
Its body transformed into countless rays of thunder that wrapped tightly around a tendril of the Demon Ghost Vine, and together, they shot into the depths of the Thunder Pool.
Lu Chen anxiously waited outside for a long time. Thankfully, his spiritual sense didn't detect any abnormalities with the Demon Ghost Vine's main body, so he continued to let it search for the spirit seed in the depths of the Thunder Pool.
Soon, a rustling sound echoed, and the tendril burst out of the Thunder Pool, carrying with it a silvery-white liquid.
It swiftly approached Lu Chen, and the tightly coiled vine unfurled, revealing a ball of green light within.
Within the green light, one could vaguely make out streaks of green thunderbolts swimming like fish.
"Is this the Green Thunder Vine's spirit seed?"
Lu Chen reached out and took it, planting it into the spirit soil.
[Green Thunder Vine Spirit Seed, Seventh-grade Spirit Herb]
"As expected!"
Lu Chen laughed heartily.
"Come, come, come, you two have done well in your seed-seeking endeavor. Each of you will be rewarded with five Thunder Lotus Seeds."
Filled with joy, he took out ten silver-white lotus seeds and gave five each to the Demon Ghost Vine and the Thunder Ghost.
"And don't forget the Green Wood Thunder Liquid that has condensed on the vine. It's a fifth-grade treasure that can temper the physical body. We must harvest and bring back every drop."
He floated lightly to the stone pillar and carefully inspected each leaf of the green vine, eventually finding six pools of azure spirit liquid.
Combined with the one he had found earlier, he now had seven in total—a bountiful harvest.
"It's time to return."
He glanced at the green vine that soared into the clouds within the Thunder Pool and thought to himself.
Lu Chen was self-aware of his limitations. Although his current strength was not inferior to an average early-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator, it was still far from sufficient when faced with those formidable beings.
"Thank you for your help in finding so many rare spirit seeds this time."
He gently patted Thunder Ghost's greenish-blue fleshy wings.
Without its guidance, he wouldn't have been able to find the Five Thunder Conjoined Flowers and the Green Wood Thunder Vine spirit seeds so easily. Not to mention the restrictions, which could have held him back for a long time, preventing him from reaching the Thunder Pool before the white-haired old woman.
He waved goodbye to Thunder Ghost.
"Until we meet again. If I manage to enter the Spirit Herb Garden next time, I'll bring you some Thunder-attribute spirit fruits."
After saying farewell, Lu Chen, accompanied by the Demon Ghost Vine, disappeared into the boundless thunder and lightning without looking back.
The sound of rumbling thunder filled his ears, and he wondered if Thunder Ghost was hiding among the bolts, seeing him off.
Lu Chen swiftly made his way back to the first island. During the journey, he constantly monitored his surroundings with his spiritual sense and the Eye of the Void.
"I see a familiar face."
He paused and, through the grayish-white eye in his palm, spotted a cultivator with thunderous wings struggling within a restriction.
"Is Fellow Daoist Lei Zheng trapped in a restriction?" Lu Chen thought to himself quietly.
When Lei Zheng finally emerged from the restriction, Lu Chen pretended to pass by and released a faint trace of his aura.
"Who's there?!" Lei Zheng's expression turned stern as he asked in a low voice.
"It's me, Fellow Daoist Lei."
Lu Chen held the Wind Thunder Sword and slowly stepped out from within the endless thunderous radiance.
"So it's Fellow Daoist Lu. It's good that you're safe," Lei Zheng said, his guard lowering slightly upon seeing Lu Chen.
"After parting ways with the others, I was trapped in restrictions for most of the time and only barely managed to escape," Lei Zheng explained.
"By the way, where are the rest of the group?" Lu Chen asked with a smile.
"I'm not sure either. There are just too many restrictions in this Spirit Herb Garden. One wrong step, and you'll be trapped," Lei Zheng replied.
"Since we've met here, Fellow Daoist Lu, please follow behind me," Lei Zheng said with a cold expression.
"Alright, then I'll have to trouble you, Fellow Daoist Lei," Lu Chen agreed, keeping his demeanor humble.
Lei Zheng took the lead, with Lu Chen following closely behind, as they made their way back to the first island.
As Lei Zheng glanced at Lu Chen's back, a hint of hesitation flashed in his eyes.
Lu Chen was merely a spirit herb cultivator, and his cultivation was a minor realm lower than his own. If he were to launch a sneak attack, success would be almost guaranteed.
Lei Zheng took a deep breath and eventually dispelled the unwholesome thoughts from his mind.
Lu Chen walked ahead, his expression indecipherable as to whether he was disappointed or satisfied.
Although he appeared vulnerable, his spiritual sense and the Eye of the Void had already locked onto Lei Zheng. If Lei Zheng showed any sign of hostility, Lu Chen could eradicate him in an instant and claim his treasures.
Unfortunately for Lei Zheng, his moral character was upright, and he managed to suppress his urges to kill and steal. In doing so, he also preserved his own life.
"There are still good cultivators in the cultivation world," Lu Chen mused to himself, his opinion of Lei Zheng improving slightly.
