Chapter 588: Oh~ How Frightening
Chapter 588: Oh~ How Frightening
Kaz, the En En Fruit ability user, can impersonate anyone with known information and abilities, thus acquiring their powers.
This information had been etched into Sage's mind.
This guy was extremely special to Sage.
The powers he displayed were not of this world.
"What is the Golden Mist?" Sage asked again.
"It contains a world's treasure, a golden legend that can fulfill any wish."
These were Vao's words, and also the legend that Hewitt and Geckel had heard.
However, what Kaz said was completely different from their understanding.
"Once every five hundred years! It's bound to happen! My ancestors recorded it; they once encountered the Golden Mist, but there were many powerful individuals present, so they failed. However, these powerful figures were all documented, and I used their records to impersonate them and gain their strength!"
"Which powerful figures?" Sage narrowed his eyes slightly.
"There was someone who ate the Shaosha Fruit and could breathe fire from his mouth. Another one was probably an Animal-type Fruit user, similar to how you transformed just now, except with a tail, and could multiply his strength."
"There was also a man in red armor who ate the Zhongzhong Fruit and could pull down meteorites with ease! Two of them! And some gangsters in strange poses, as well as a fishmonger..."
As if reminiscing, Kaz murmured and continued, "Anyway, they existed, and my ancestors recorded them in great detail. So, when I impersonated them, I also obtained their powers. Sage, even you, once I learn your information, lifestyle, and combat techniques, I can impersonate you!"
Upon hearing this, Sage merely glanced at him indifferently and then looked up at the sky, clicking his tongue. His expression darkened, "What's going on?"
The figures he mentioned were eerily familiar. Although their powers were attributed to Devil Fruits in the vast sea, Sage knew it wasn't that simple.
But the more he thought about it, the more unsettling it became.
Parallel worlds?
Time travel?
Or something else?
"Just because I'm here, it doesn't mean the world has to change," Sage clenched his teeth.
There was the butterfly effect, where the flapping of a butterfly's wings could cause a storm on the other side of the ocean.
In the context of the world, it meant that when a world line changed, a different world would emerge.
"A crossover?"
Sage furrowed his brows, and this reminded him of something. Some individuals weren't necessarily impossible to appear.
"Damn it! It's more annoying than knowing it's a coincidence brought about by my ability!"
Sage muttered and then turned to Kaz, "When will this Golden Mist appear, and what are its characteristics?"
"According to the records, at the center of the volcano, once every five hundred years, when a rare meteor passes by, the volcano will erupt with the Golden Mist. A large meteor will appear tonight, and once the Golden Mist emerges, wishes can be granted. It can even give you a world!"
With his pressure points struck, Kaz had no choice but to speak.
"Lily," Sage called out.
Lily had already looked up at the sky while Kaz was talking, and upon hearing Sage's words, she frowned, "I can't see any related signs at the moment."
Boom! As soon as she finished speaking, Sage waved his hand forcefully, and his aura transformed into a gust of wind, sweeping over the four individuals and causing their bodies to explode into a shower of flesh.
"Then we'll wait." Sage turned around and instructed, "Set up camp here and observe the situation."
Sage had no interest in their stories, hardships, or dreams.
Now that the information was obtained, it was time for the moment of truth.
However, Lily was taken aback by the deaths of the four.
"I remember now!"
Lily said, "I did send three groups of people to this area."
As she spoke, she glared at the pile of flesh with a hint of frustration.
The remains of their ships were still there, so the people on board couldn't have survived.
"Let's stick to the usual plan," Sage said.
The situation was different now compared to before. In the past, without their own territory, they stored the loot they acquired. Sage acted as the guarantor of fairness, ensuring that the wealth they accumulated was distributed to those with close relationships.
Now, his subordinates were also engaging in piracy, mainly maintaining the excellent style of the Calamity Pirates when conquering new islands. They would rob the rich, passing merchant ships that couldn't produce their credentials, and some pirates still in the first half of the New World.
However, these spoils of war were usually liquidated quickly, and the money had already been distributed. The pirates even received salaries.
The Sage family's business empire was vast, and on this foundation, there was a system in place for the disabled and the fallen among his subordinates.
For those injured beyond recovery in battle, they were given menial jobs, often serving as local island personnel or low-level managers within the Sage Industries.
As for those who passed away, their salary was paid in full up to the age of one hundred, and this sum was given as a death benefit.
The expenses for this were undoubtedly substantial, but Sage understood his core principles and never wavered in this regard.
As a result, his crew members were the most fearless and loyal.
He had the largest territory.
He possessed the greatest strength.
He offered the best treatment.
Even death was not a concern, so what was there to fear?
These crew members feared more for Sage's downfall, and thus, they fought with unparalleled determination.
"Golden Mist, containing the wealth of a world, granting any wish... Sage, is this One Piece?" Renetia's eyes sparkled with excitement.
"Impossible, we're not even on the right route."
Sage shook his head. "Our sailing route is not the same."
"The route?"
"Gol D. Roger, after discovering the endpoint of the Grand Line at Water 7, sailed it again. If there wasn't a standard route, he wouldn't have needed to sail it again. So, there must be a standard route."
Sage chuckled. "If not, why not just flip over from Twin Cape to the back of the Red Line? It's not that big of a deal."
Flipping over the Red Line was not a significant feat; many in the vast ocean could achieve it, including the Vinsmoke family.
However, Sage wasn't particularly interested in this. What he sought might not be achievable through One Piece, so it was better to rely on his own hard work.
Some crew members, having received the news early, brought camping equipment from the ship and set up camp in the open space, even bringing Sage's throne.
Sage took his seat, gazing at the crater ahead, and said, "We'll wait here and see what happens. Marika, I want stew for dinner."
"Yes, sir."
Marika smiled. "In that case, I'll start preparing. Stewing takes time."
The sun gradually moved westward, reaching the western horizon before dipping below the skyline, allowing the night to engulf the day. Stars and the moon illuminated the camp below.
The night sky was clear, dotted with countless stars, with no sign of meteor showers or any change in the weather.
It was just an ordinary night sky over the vast ocean.
After dinner, Lily stood by Sage's side, holding a telescope, observing the night sky without pause.
Even now, she hadn't noticed anything unusual.
During this time, Hawkins continuously shuffled and dealt cards, but his fortune-telling efforts yielded no insights.
Honestly, he had never heard of this so-called Golden Mist.
There weren't even any related books, and with a span of five hundred years, how could one possibly know?
"Sage, I can't see anything," Lily said, lowering the telescope. "Is this Golden Mist dangerous?"
"Who knows? Well, someone does."
Sage was pouring himself a drink when he heard this and paused, then suddenly laughed. "Bring me the Den Den Mushi. Connect me to Lucci."
Soon, the Den Den Mushi was brought to him, and after a series of rings, Lucci's stubble appeared on the screen.
"Sage, what's up?" Lucci asked coldly. "I'm on a delivery mission right now. If you need information, the Cipher Pol will know."
(This chapter is a mess and doesn't make sense. I've done my best to translate what I can, but it's very confusing.)
Recently, Gabra and Kaku had switched shifts, and the Wolf, Kabuki, and Cipher Pol had arrived at their beloved Ohara, naturally bringing along some related intelligence.
"I'm not calling you; I want you to connect me to the Five Elders. I'll speak to them directly." Sage stated.
If the World Government had specifically hired Vao, then someone must know about it.
Those immortal elders surely had their secrets!
"The Five Elders? Even you want to speak to them. I understand."
Lucci didn't ask further. Soon, the sound of dialing a call echoed from the Den Den Mushi, and when the distinct ringtone of a connection sounded, Sage spoke up. "This is Sage. I have a question about the Golden Mist."
There was a moment of silence on the other end before a raspy voice spoke, "Have you discovered it?"
It was Satan.
"Your men have been reduced to ashes here, and you ask me if I've discovered it?" Sage scoffed. "If this is a once-in-five-hundred-years meteor shower, I suggest you don't do anything unnecessary. If you hadn't piqued my curiosity, I wouldn't have paid any attention here. You're doing too much."
"This was our miscalculation, and we did indeed overlook it. In the next five hundred years, we will learn from this lesson."
Satan spoke in a deep voice, "Sage, that thing is beyond your ability to bear. It's not just any wish, but the power to destroy the world! Even for a moment, it's unbearable. We can negotiate. If you give up the Golden Mist, we will grant you one request."
"Hmph, has anyone ever told you that the more desperate your enemies are, the more it proves I'm right?"
Sage chuckled, "Destroy the world? Don't be ridiculous. The world will never be destroyed, not even humanity. If it were that fragile, it would have collapsed five hundred years ago. This thing will only cause problems for your rule, right?"
"We are just offering you friendly advice, Sage."
The voice changed, and it carried a sharp edge.
"I am Nasu, the Financial Martial God. The legend of the Golden Mist is uncertain to us as well. It's too fleeting. You may gain nothing, so why not accept our condition? It's not a bad deal for you."
"What I want, I will take for myself. Alright, I understand now. That's it. Oh, and I have something to tell you."
Sage's eyes fixed on the moon, which had risen to the center of the sky, a perfect silver disc with an otherworldly glow. Suddenly, the moon emitted a silver radiance, and within it, a dazzling meteor streaked across the sky, outshining the other stars.
It passed over the East Sea, the Paradise, Mariejois, and arrived in the New World, descending directly towards the island.
"Too late!"
Sage abruptly hung up the phone, drained his cup of wine, and cackled, "Here it comes!"
"There's no sign of a meteor at all."
Lily murmured, watching as the meteor swiftly descended and landed right in the crater of the volcano.
Boom!!
The impact of the meteor caused the volcano to erupt, spewing out a massive amount of lava and a mist that, under the moonlight, took on a golden hue, becoming increasingly dense and enveloping the entire island in an instant, bursting with light.
But the light lasted only for a fleeting moment before vanishing.
Lily shielded her face and glanced at the crater, exclaiming, "Is this just a natural phenomenon? The volcano is erupting! Retreat!"
Her subordinates immediately withdrew without hesitation, leaving behind even their camping equipment. However, they still needed the throne, and as they prepared to carry it, they hesitated.
Sage, who was seated on the throne, suddenly froze, like a lifeless puppet, maintaining his posture without moving a muscle.
...
"Hmm? Where is everyone?"
With the disappearance of the light, Sage looked around. The island remained the same, the sky unchanged, and the sea as vast as ever. But his subordinates had vanished without a trace.
He was left alone, sitting on the throne.
"An illusion? Or something else?"
A red dot flashed in Sage's eyes, and his senses told him that something was amiss.
His perception confirmed that this was reality.
But the people were gone.
Had the mist devoured his subordinates? Or was it some kind of teleportation that sent them elsewhere? Or perhaps, it was just an accident?
"It won't stop me."
Sage stood up, gazing at the sky as black-red lightning crackled around him. "So this is a world? If this is all it is, I can break through it at any time."
"Oh, how frightening. Have I lost my way?"
Before he could finish his sentence, he heard a familiar voice beside him, even before he could activate his Tyrant Aura.
Yellow Monkey?
No. The voice was younger.
Sage turned to look, and on the other side of the island, a figure slowly approached, his cloak billowing in the night wind.
"What's this guy doing here? Is this still the sea?"
The man grumbled, revealing his appearance.
"Yellow Monkey?" Sage was taken aback.
"Kaido?" The man also seemed surprised.
But soon, both of them sized each other up and showed signs of astonishment.
This guy, with his center-parted, shaggy hair, golden formal attire, and navy cloak, looked exactly like Yellow Monkey, right down to his pouting expression.
Not Yellow Monkey, but even more formidable!
"Navy?"
"Pirate?"
Both spoke simultaneously, then paused, their bodies tensing in caution.
The other person was incredibly powerful!
