Chapter 584: Golden Mist
Chapter 584: Golden Mist
Boom!
In a sea that had been calm for a long time, a sudden thunderclap echoed, stirring up a storm and heavy rain.
Although it was daytime all around, a large area at the center was shrouded in dark clouds, and the dense storm made it impossible to see what was inside. Only the lightning that pierced through the sky could briefly illuminate the darkness, revealing the silhouette of a massive ship within the tempest.
In the captain's cabin, Sage glared at the sudden downpour and lightning outside and couldn't help but curse, "What a load of crap!"
In this weather, not even sea beasts would dare to venture out, let alone fish. It was as if he was trying to fish for ghosts.
"Alright, calm down, have some dessert."
Marica walked up from the stairs and placed a plate of desserts on the table.
On the plate were spiral pastries adorned with cream puffs, made with the finest milk and sweetened with honey and sugar. They seemed to have been frozen, providing a refreshing and soothing sensation when eaten.
Sage clicked his tongue, sat down, and finished off the dessert with a few spoonfuls. Then, he took out a cigar and lit it.
On the sofa in front of him, Marica offered the desserts to Lily and Renetia, who were sitting there reading and drawing. Meanwhile, at a table in front of them, Hawkins and Ulki were playing a game of Old Maid.
Marica placed the desserts on the table, and both men nodded in thanks. Then, Hawkins reached out and drew a regular card from the two remaining cards in Ulki's hand, leaving only the joker in Ulki's possession.
"You lose," Hawkins said. "You have the remaining joker."
"Damn it, my luck isn't good today," Ulki lamented.
"Hmph, you're talking about luck to a fortune-teller? That's ridiculous," Sage chuckled. "Even without a Devil Fruit, this guy's card skills are top-notch."
"Sometimes, breaking free from predetermined outcomes is a grand endeavor, Captain," Ulki said with a sinister laugh, raising one hand.
How could he not know he was losing? But this game was also about probability. Even winning once would be significant.
"Similarly, I want to know if my ability can break free from that so-called fate. If my opponent has good luck, can I break it? That would be an enjoyable challenge," Hawkins added.
"Your willpower shouldn't be wasted on such trivial matters," Sage said with a roll of his eyes.
"Where are we?" he asked.
Lily, with her refined manners, was delicately eating her dessert. Upon hearing the question, she put down her dessert and used a napkin to politely wipe her mouth before replying, "Two hours more."
Renetia, on the other hand, quickly finished her dessert and stuck out her tongue, letting it curl around her lips as she revealed her small fangs in a mischievous smile. "Such a heavy storm means Sage's bad luck is off the charts. We haven't had good weather the whole way, which means this trip won't be dangerous at all."
"Yeah, yeah, it's all my doing," Sage said, too lazy to argue. "It's obvious it won't be dangerous. In this vast sea, there are few things that make me feel threatened, and a guy who hides his true strength isn't worth worrying about."
Those who could make him feel threatened and give him a hard time wouldn't hide their abilities. Such individuals wouldn't have much willpower to speak of.
Two hours later, the Death Star arrived at the area marked as a blank spot on the sea map. Unlike the mist depicted on the map, there was no fog here; it was just an ordinary sea.
The seawater still churned with the storm, and lightning bolts striking the water created sparks that spread through the waves.
Lily stepped out of the captain's cabin, letting the rain and wind soak her clothes. Even with her battle armor skirt, the wet fabric clung to her well-toned thighs and accentuated her slender waist. The armor over her chest could barely contain her ample bosom.
She extended one hand and closed her eyes slightly, sensing the wind direction and humidity.
Despite the storm, having experienced it for so long, she could gauge the intensity of the weather and estimate what it would be like under normal conditions.
The intensity of storms varied depending on the season and the type of island.
For instance, on spring-like islands, there would be more lightning. On summer-like islands, the rain would be heavier. Autumn storms would be fierce, and winter would bring a chill.
However, it wasn't as simple as that. Factors like the weather on a particular day and wind direction also played a role, making it not as easy to estimate as it seemed.
But with enough data and observations of storm conditions and normal weather patterns, it was possible to make a rough calculation.
"Hmm, the storm isn't intense, the rain isn't heavy, but the lightning is stronger, and the wind is weaker. It seems like a low-wind area with calm seas," Lily said, opening her eyes. "A spring-like island, perhaps?"
Speaking, she picked up a telescope and peered through the rain, trying to make out the shape of an island in the distance. Despite the storm, the telescope revealed a faint outline of an island.
From its silhouette, it appeared to be a typical volcanic island, flat around the edges with a mountain in the center.
Lily furrowed her brows. The more typical it seemed, the more suspicious it became.
Based on her experience, this island wasn't particularly large and was just an ordinary, unremarkable island. It was even uncertain if anyone lived there.
Normally, within Kaido's territory, most islands without a sea map were considered uninhabited. Even if they had magnetic fields for recording, it was unlikely that an Eternal Log Pose would intentionally record the coordinates of such places.
On this island, what could possibly be hidden? Perhaps the treasures of other pirates, stashed away and forgotten? Could such a treasure be the cause of their distorted memories?
...
Under the clear blue sky, sunlight bathed the island's surface.
Bang!
Two figures clashed in the ground, only to separate instantly, and in the center of their separation, two other figures stood, seemingly spectating the fight.
"Hmmmph, quite the intense battle, isn't it? It's as if they're trying to obliterate the very earth itself. Even in the presence of the King of Nothingness and the Emperor of Time and Space, they could be considered formidable foes. No! They are arch-nemeses! Enemies of fate!"
The speaker had a slender build, with a golden ratio physique, and long hair that covered half of his face. He held one hand over his face, parting his fingers to reveal another eye, while his index finger rested parallel to his nose. His waist twisted peculiarly, and his legs were positioned in an odd stance.
From a distance, he appeared to be striking a pose, but there was something peculiar about it. Behind him, a burly man dressed in women's clothing awkwardly shifted his legs and exclaimed in a robust yet spirited voice, "Hey, stop fighting! Let's live in harmony!"
"Don't speak in such a disgusting tone; it doesn't suit your voice or your appearance!"
The young man with protective goggles, who had landed on the ground, first shouted at the burly man and then turned to the long-haired youth.
"And stop making up names like 'enemies of fate.' We've just met, so don't go around labeling people so casually!"
The other man, who had a serious demeanor, landed and clenched his fists. He stared intently at the youth with protective goggles.
"Hahaha, my arch-nemesis, my oldest foe! And soon to be my dearest friend! From the moment I first laid eyes on you, I knew your destiny. Together, under the wishes of the Golden Mist, we will grow and eventually usher in the Twilight of the Gods!"
The long-haired youth, his eyes partially covered, threw back his head and laughed. He extended his hand and said, "Let's wait until the Golden Mist appears, and then we can settle this once and for all. If you don't agree, you'll get a taste of my Dark Extinction Dragon Wave."
"Can the King of Time and Space use dark techniques? You're not Blackbeard. And stop labeling people! Who are you to call us friends?"
The youth with protective goggles rolled his eyes but then relaxed his body. He raised his hands and said to the serious-looking, muscular man, "However, he does have a point. If we can't defeat you, we might as well wait for the Golden Mist. Of course, that's assuming it will appear. If it doesn't, I don't see the point in fighting. I don't know you, and there's no conflict."
The muscular man remained silent, but his tense body relaxed as he crossed his arms and stood to the side.
"Well, peace is the best option. Long live peace! We should all get along harmoniously."
The burly man in women's clothing raised his fists to his chin, striking a cheerful pose, and said, "It's reassuring to unite. After all, this is a Yonko's territory. If we're discovered, things could get ugly."
"Don't worry, they won't come."
The youth with protective goggles shrugged, "Those who disappeared won't be remembered, including you. A figure like Catastrophe wouldn't bother with a small island..."
Boom!
Before he could finish his sentence, a thunderous roar echoed from outside, darkening the sky. A fierce storm, accompanied by howling waves, swept in, instantly whipping their clothes and wetting their hair.
The youth with protective goggles turned instinctively, his face paling, "Is my bad luck that bad?"
"That's..."
The burly man in women's clothing, who had been striking feminine poses, now stood rigid, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword. His voice returned to normal.
Even the long-haired youth, who had been striking a pose, couldn't maintain it, his eyes widening in shock.
They could see it clearly.
The sudden onslaught of the massive storm, and the ship that was about to dock, its silhouette faintly visible through the rain.
The terrifying legend of the sea, a manifestation of disaster.
The serious and taciturn muscular man spoke through gritted teeth, "It's Catastrophe!"
"It shouldn't be... It can't be..."
The youth with protective goggles muttered, "Their memories should have been erased, so why did he come personally? Luck? Is my luck that bad? Why would such a powerful pirate come to this small island? Does he know about the legend?"
While he wasn't the only one who knew about the legend, the other three who had come to the island clearly did as well. But it was just a legend, and its existence was uncertain.
Moreover, he was certain that Catastrophe wouldn't know about it. If he did, he wouldn't have sent his underlings first.
But now...
Why did he come in person?
