Chapter 583: The First Task (First Update)
Chapter 583: The First Task (First Update)
"Hello, Jerry Carmen!"
However, in response to Fleur’s initiative, Jerry merely shook her hand politely and continued sipping his tea, showing no intention of engaging in further conversation.
This left the proud Fleur momentarily stunned, and then she walked away, somewhat indignant.
She had a liking for Jerry, but she was also very proud and didn’t believe she was inferior to him. Since she had taken the initiative, she expected him to be more forthcoming.
Jerry, however, continued to leisurely sip his tea. He wasn’t playing hard to get; he genuinely didn’t want anything to happen between them, so he made his stance clear from the start.
On one hand, it was because of Hermione, and on the other, he knew Fleur was set to become Ron’s sister-in-law in the future.
If he gave her any ideas, it would only complicate things later on.
According to his principles, if he had no interest in someone who liked him, he believed it was best to make that clear right away. Keeping someone hanging, without any hope of a relationship, was simply cruel.
However, sometimes this approach wasn’t entirely effective.
For example, with Daphne from the same year.
Fortunately, his Witch Shielding Charm worked well, preventing him from getting into awkward situations.
Shortly after Fleur entered the room, Jerry heard Snape instruct the prefects to lead the students back to their dormitories.
About five minutes later, Headmaster Snape, Deputy Headmistress Mcgonagall, Dumbledore, and the other three referees entered the small room.
Jerry stood up from his chair and joined Fleur and Krum, who had also risen.
The three headmasters each offered a few words of encouragement, and then Dumbledore spoke up:
"Alright, now let our two department heads guide the three champions through the first task. After all, only you three know the specifics of this year’s Triwizard Tournament."
While the Triwizard Tournament is a competition involving three schools, the actual details of the tasks are organized by the Ministry of Magic to ensure fairness.
This is why officials from the Ministry of Magic serve as referees.
Thus, apart from Ludo and Barty, the three headmasters and Dumbledore were just as unaware of the specifics of the first task as the students.
"Mr. Crouch, would you like to take it from here?"
Ludo stepped back tactfully.
Barty nodded and stepped forward:
"Champions, I will now brief you on the first task."
He began to explain in a formal manner:
"The first task is designed to test your courage, so we won’t be telling you what it is. Facing the unknown is a crucial trait for a Witch... a very important one...
What I can tell you is that the first task will begin on November 24th. The challenge you will face is extremely dangerous, and a single misstep could cost you your life.
Apart from your wands, you are not allowed to carry any magical items, nor can you seek help from anyone. You must complete the task independently."
His ominous words made Krum and Fleur look very serious, while Jerry seemed to be lost in thought.
However, as the head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation, Barty had some knowledge about Jerry. Setting aside the rumors from a year ago, the fact that Jerry had used magic to rescue over a dozen Muggles from a group suspected to be Death Eaters, two months prior, was well-documented.
And Jerry was also certain that his Patronus was a Giant.
"There's some good news for you. Because the Triwizard Tournament is a long event, to help alleviate your stress, the three of you won't have to take any exams this year."
Fleur and Krum's eyes lit up at this, while Jerry seemed to be lost in thought.
It wasn't that he was intentionally zoning out; rather, while drinking the tea, he had suddenly gained an insight into a certain law. He was now concentrating all his energy on deducing it, which made him appear distracted.
After quickly guiding them through the tournament events, Barty didn't linger and asked Snape to borrow Hogwarts' fireplace to return to the Ministry of Magic.
"Barty, at least stay for a drink before you go?"
Dumbledore urged.
Barty shook his head in response.
"I'm sorry, Dumbledore, but I really can't. The department is still very busy during this period. Although I've temporarily assigned young Percy Weasley to take charge—he's very enthusiastic, I must say, perhaps a bit too much."
At this, Barty cast a slightly resentful glance at Jerry.
"Thanks to Mr. Carmen, it's his invention of Portal Magic that has made our department have to engage in international cooperation and exchange with personnel from over a hundred countries' Ministries of Magic."
Originally, the Department of International Magical Cooperation had a relatively light workload and was one of the more relaxed departments in the Ministry of Magic.
However, due to Jerry's Portal Magic, they had become extremely busy recently.
Portal Magic allows free and unmonitored travel to all countries on Earth. As Jerry is a British Witch, many countries' Ministry of Magic personnel have gathered at the British Ministry of Magic to discuss the formulation of relevant laws, how to restrict illegal Dark Witches from using the portals, and how to legally utilize the portals to facilitate cooperation and exchange among Witches worldwide.
As the only Witch in the entire Ministry of Magic who is fluent in all countries' languages, he is essential for advancing the planned work.
This is why he is in such a hurry to return to the department after completing this project.
Despite Barty's resentful gaze, Jerry was still lost in thought.
Krum and Fleur, standing beside him, looked at Jerry with surprise.
Initially, they thought that while Jerry's invention of Portal Magic was impressive, it wasn't that significant. After all, Witches invent new magics every day. Besides, they had been at school and hadn't noticed much change.
Only now did they realize that Jerry's invention had already impacted the Ministry of Magic, and not just the British one, but the Ministries of Magic worldwide.
After Barty left, Dumbledore led the remaining headmasters and referees to the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade for a drink. Krum and Fleur returned to the Ghost Ship and the Thestral-Drawn Carriage, respectively.
Jerry, however, was still in the process of understanding the law, and with the little energy he had left, he made his way back to the Slytherin Dormitory.
