Chapter 583: My Ability is Unsolvable
Chapter 583: My Ability is Unsolvable
"Hahaha, true enough. That sort of thing doesn’t matter. The Grand Line always has its share of strange occurrences, and legendary figures are bound to appear from time to time."
Roger cast an approving glance at Kuro and said, "Brother, you're so young yet already this strong. Your future is bound to be incredible. You might even become my son’s rival someday."
"Captain, when did you get a son?" Jaba asked.
"I’ll have one eventually!" Roger laughed heartily. "And it’ll definitely be a son!"
"Come on, show some respect to Old Man already!"
Boom!
A wisp of Haki-laced slash hurtled toward Roger. He swung his blade to shatter the attack, his smile gradually shifting into one of anticipation.
"Brother, are you coming at me again? I’m really looking forward to it—what other techniques do you have?"
Hearing this, Kuro narrowed his eyes and lunged forward once more. His body tore through the air, creating a bullet-shaped air barrier ahead of him as he closed the distance to Roger at near-sonic speed.
Autumn Water retracted, then instantly unsheathed.
"Crescent Moon Slash!"
A black beam erupted in a straight line, aiming for Roger’s neck.
Clang!
Roger’s blade blocked Autumn Water before Kuro had even fully drawn it. Roger had anticipated the move the moment Kuro’s Haki shifted, his Observation Haki detecting the attack in time for his immense strength to execute a perfect defense.
And now—counterattack!
Boom!
A surge of Haki and aura enveloped Roger’s sword as he prepared to strike. But Kuro, sensing the danger, immediately withdrew. His blade missed, and his body slid sideways, evading Roger’s counterattack.
This opponent thrived on aura-based clashes. Shanks’ techniques were of the same school—prolonged, grueling duels where opponents locked blades and tested their Haki. That was their specialty.
Kuro, however, excelled in high-speed bursts. He struck with one blade, then switched direction instantly if he missed. While he could endure drawn-out fights, they weren’t his forte. He preferred to avoid them, especially with enemies nearby.
Roger’s Observation Haki was formidable, but his speed was lacking—Kuro’s greatest strength.
Sliding sideways, Kuro bent one knee and planted the other foot, Autumn Water sheathed at his waist. Gripping the hilt, he became a phantom, dashing toward Roger’s flank.
Before he could close in, Roger suddenly sensed the shift and lashed out with a kick aimed at Kuro’s direction. A layer of surging Haki coated his foot. Kuro, however, revealed a flash of ruthlessness and deliberately moved closer.
Bang!
The kick struck Kuro’s waist, sending a jolt of pain through his abdomen. A grunt escaped him.
Without the Black Tortoise Body, that kick would’ve sent him flying. But now, closing the distance was all that mattered.
"Mystic Art."
As Kuro uttered the words, Roger used the force of his kick to propel himself backward, escaping the range of Kuro’s technique.
He landed a short distance away, grinning. "Brother, this move sounds a bit dangerous."
Kuro landed silently, his expression cold.
At this level, finding an opening was no easy task. Even baiting him with a feint wouldn’t work.
A direct clash alone wouldn’t decide this.
Then—
Kuro’s eyes narrowed. He suddenly slammed his hand on the ground, locking eyes with Roger. "Lion’s Majesty!"
Boom! Boom!
Shockwaves rippled through the earth.
"Oh! That technique."
Recognizing the familiar name and rhythm, Roger’s eyes widened. "So it’s true—you’ve encountered Shanks. You’ve even mastered his technique perfectly."
"Enough talk", Kuro bared his teeth. "Old Man, let’s see you find footing now!"
The island trembled violently.
Boom!!
With a deafening roar, Roger instinctively dodged. The ground where he’d stood split open, a massive fissure yawning like an abyss.
"This—"
Jaba steadied himself amidst the shaking, stunned. "This shockwave… it’s the same as Whitebeard’s ability! Is the Float-Float Fruit really this powerful?!"
Roger fixed Kuro with a slightly grim expression. "Brother, are you trying to tear this island apart? That would drain a lot of physical strength."
Kuro lifted his head, a malevolent grin spreading. "You’ll see soon enough!"
"That’s something I can’t allow—it’d be too troublesome."
Roger gripped his blade with both hands and charged forward, slashing at Kuro.
Kuro, however, ascended into the sky, hovering above Roger.
He could fly—what could Roger do?
"If I can’t reach you, you can’t reach me either!"
Kuro raised his five fingers and clenched them tightly. "I’ve touched it. That’s enough!"
Boom!
The island’s landmass began to collapse, cracks spreading like a web. Seawater surged into the fissures, transforming the solid island into a shallow, fragmented expanse.
Then, with a powerful shockwave, the entire island lifted into the air, rising above the sea.
"Hey, this is—"
From the ships anchored at sea, Silvers Rayleigh looked up at the ascending island, sweat dripping. "What’s going on? Did Shanks arrive? But this aura feels different… Roger…"
On the island, Jaba shouted at Roger. "Roger! Jump into the sea while you still can!"
Roger shook his head, gazing at the man orchestrating the chaos. "No. If we jump into the sea, that man will have a countermeasure ready. His mastery of this ability surpasses Shanks’."
A smirk tugged at Kuro’s lips.
Indeed, if they fled into the sea, they’d play right into his hands.
Better yet, that was exactly what he wanted.
After all, how long could rocks and land delay them?
But in the sea—everything changed.
The substances he controlled could churn the Grand Line itself.
That rotational force could crush even steel.
Once they were in the water, they’d be at his mercy.
He could keep the Grand Line spinning indefinitely, grinding them to death.
"One Piece may be the Pirate King, but he’s no King of the Sea. He can’t dominate the oceans."
"Down you go, Old Man!"
Kuro snarled grimly, clenching his fingers again. With a thunderous roar, the island began to collapse inward. Its edges coalesced into countless lion heads, roaring as they surged toward the two men.
"I’m joining the fight!"
Jaba gripped his twin axes, crossing them as he slashed. Two arcs of steel cleaved through the lion heads.
But quickly, the shattered heads reformed.
Matter never vanished—it only decomposed or transformed.
Unless burned to ash or turned to ice, Kuro’s control remained unbroken.
And decomposition? That was no obstacle.
The two men weren’t Devil Fruit users.
No matter how they attacked, they couldn’t sever his control—only drain their strength in vain.
