Chapter 582: Are You Sure You Want to Copy My Homework?
Chapter 582: Are You Sure You Want to Copy My Homework?
Mad-Eye Moody clearly paid no attention to Ron's rambling. After giving him a glance, he hobbled away on his wooden leg in a hurry.
Ron slowly let out a breath of relief. Then, feeling embarrassed by his earlier fear, he lowered his voice to explain to Harry and the others.
Ivan stared at Mad-Eye Moody's retreating back, suddenly recalling the professor's earlier admission that his tenure would be exactly one year, coinciding with Voldemort's curse.
Was it a coincidence?
Or did Dumbledore want to test whether it was possible to avoid Voldemort's curse on the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor?
After all, the main effect of the curse was to ensure no professor could teach for more than a year, with various accidents being mere byproducts to achieve this goal.
If Mad-Eye Moody left on his own after a year, the curse might not target him so aggressively.
If that were the case, Mad-Eye Moody might be able to leave the position as safely as Lupin did.
In the following weeks, nothing out of the ordinary happened in the castle. Harry had completely forgotten about the scene from his dream, as the heavy workload of his classes left him breathless.
Especially Mad-Eye Moody's Defense Against the Dark Arts!
The legendary Auror divided each class into two parts: first, he would teach the students about defensive techniques against Dark Magic or common offensive spells, followed by intense and exciting practical exercises.
Students called upon by Mad-Eye Moody were required to use the methods taught in class to counter his spells. If someone performed poorly, he would not hesitate to give them a stern reprimand.
Despite this, Mad-Eye Moody's classes remained very popular.
After all, hands-on practical courses were rare, and they often learned many useful defensive techniques from Defense Against the Dark Arts.
However, what frustrated the young wizards was that Mad-Eye Moody would leave a significant amount of homework at the end of each class, usually requiring them to provide self-defense methods for specific situations.
And they couldn't just write anything down, as Mad-Eye Moody would randomly select students to demonstrate their methods in class, testing their feasibility.
For example, in one assignment on how to defend against Tarantallegra, Seamus came up with the idea of rolling to avoid the spell and then quickly rushing to punch his opponent in the nose to win the fight.
However, during the practical exercise, Seamus was hit by Mad-Eye Moody's spell before he could even roll, and ended up dancing for most of the class, nearly breaking his legs.
As a result, during Defense Against the Dark Arts, the students were always in a cycle of fearing being called on and eagerly anticipating watching others struggle.
"So, how do we deal with the Disarming Charm and the Impediment Jinx? But I already wrote about this last time. Should I look for cover? Hide under the table? Oh no, what if Professor Moody calls on me this time?"
In the morning, in the Gryffindor Common Room, Ron looked at the homework assignment and shouted in despair, especially since Mad-Eye Moody did not allow them to write similar defensive methods too frequently.
"Ivan, can you show us how you wrote it?" Harry, equally frustrated, turned to look at Ivan for help.
"Are you sure you want to copy my homework?" Ivan said with a strange expression, pushing his notebook over.
Harry and Ron immediately leaned in to look, their faces turning red with embarrassment. On the page, it casually read: "We should cast the Disarming Charm more quickly to counter our opponent."
"Really?" Harry looked at Ivan, completely speechless.
"Has my method ever failed?" Ivan shrugged, closed his homework notebook, and prepared to turn it in as is tomorrow.
Harry and Ron exchanged a look of exasperation, ultimately sighing in frustration. This was why they always felt so helpless. The defense methods Ivan came up with were simply impossible for them to replicate, making it impossible to copy his work.
At first, Ivan, in an effort to save time, had listed only "Protego" as his defense method, writing it every single time.
It wasn't until Mad-Eye Moody, unable to tolerate it any longer, ordered them not to write the same thing repeatedly that Ivan gave up on this one-size-fits-all defense spell. Since he didn't want to put much thought into it, his answers became increasingly absurd.
For example, when faced with a Dark Wizard's attack, one should immediately subdue and deliver them to Azkaban.
Or, if you eliminate the opponent first, you can effectively neutralize the threat they pose.
Not only did they find these suggestions absurd, but Mad-Eye Moody himself felt the same way. However, after personally testing Ivan's methods in class, Moody had to admit that they were surprisingly effective.
As a result, in recent Defense Against the Dark Arts classes, Mad-Eye Moody has even appointed Ivan as an assistant, using offensive magic to test the other students.
Unable to get help from Ivan, Harry and Ron turned to Hermione, but the young witch showed no mercy. She snapped her notebook shut and glared at them.
"You should come up with your own solutions! Professor Moody has said in class that we can't rely on others to protect us!"
Feeling utterly helpless, the two could only lower their heads and rack their brains.
Watching the troubled Harry and Ron, Ivan shook his head inwardly. With such a competent teacher as Mad-Eye Moody, it was a shame they weren't taking their studies seriously. They were truly beyond help!
If judged solely by the growth of the students, Mad-Eye Moody was undoubtedly the most competent Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Ivan had ever seen, even surpassing Lupin.
Mad-Eye Moody was stricter and more decisive, practically forcing the students to grow rapidly.
If they continued to learn this way for an entire year, they might not become excellent warriors, but at the very least, they would be able to handle unexpected situations and have some self-preservation skills.
Of course, Mad-Eye Moody's aggressive approach was likely influenced by Dumbledore's subtle guidance.
The only thing that surprised Ivan was that Mad-Eye Moody hadn't called each student up to test their resistance to the Imperius Curse over the past few days.
But upon reflection, it made sense. That was probably a specific test Barty Crouch Jr. had set up for Harry to determine just how extraordinary he was, capable of overcoming Unforgivable Curses.
It took Ron and Harry more than half an hour to finally finish Mad-Eye Moody's homework. Afterward, the three of them headed to the Great Hall for lunch.
As they reached the entrance hall, they were surprised to find a large group of students gathered at the door, crowding around a large notice posted at the foot of the marble staircase.
"What's going on?" Ron asked curiously.
Ivan squeezed through the crowd and took a look. The notice on the wall detailed the Triwizard Tournament, mentioning that the representatives from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang would arrive on Friday, October 30th, at six in the evening.
