Chapter 581: Ron: If I Got a Notion, Professor Moody Would Beg for Mercy!
Shaken by Mad-Eye Moody's actions, everyone in the class dared not slack off for the rest of the lesson, diligently taking notes.
As the class was about to end, Hermione couldn't help but ask.
"Professor Moody, why are you teaching us about the Unforgivable Curses? I read in a book that this is forbidden knowledge, and the Ministry of Magic wouldn't allow it to be taught in class, especially since we're only in our fourth year."
Mad-Eye Moody stopped in his tracks, turned to look at Hermione, and then scanned the other young wizards who were equally curious. He explained:
"Good question! Normally, Hogwarts wouldn't teach you this until you graduate, but recent events have changed. Headmaster Dumbledore believes you need to know more about Dark Magic to protect yourselves in the future!"
"Clearly, I am more suited for this task than anyone else! That's why Dumbledore asked me to take on the role of Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor!"
Mad-Eye Moody continued, pacing around the room with his wooden leg. "Of course, I'm here to help for just one year. Once the situation stabilizes, I'll return to my peaceful retirement."
"Professors, do you think we might face some real Danger in the future? Like being hunted by a Dark Wizard who can cast the Killing Curse?" Seamus sneered.
"Yes! That's very possible, Mr. Finnigan! I'm not joking!" Mad-Eye Moody looked at him sternly. "You shouldn't wait until the Danger is upon you to regret not learning enough!"
Seamus was stunned into silence, unable to respond. Mad-Eye Moody ignored him and turned to the rest of the class, warning them:
"I've seen many people like you in my time as an Auror—naive and full of themselves. Some were even my intern Beaters. Back then, the Protego spell was essential for Beaters, but some didn't take it seriously. When they faced real combat, they realized their Protective Charms were woefully inadequate!"
"They thought their opponents would show mercy, as if it were a Wizards' Duel in a game." Mad-Eye Moody's voice grew hoarse, and he continued sarcastically.
"Unfortunately, they were wrong. Those Dark Wizards showed no mercy when they took their lives!"
The young wizards couldn't help but laugh at this.
But the next moment, Mad-Eye Moody's roar cut them off.
"There's nothing to laugh about! I'm not telling you a bedtime story! I doubt you've considered the fates of those people. One Beater was hit by the Cruciatus Curse in the chest during a battle and died on the spot. We couldn't even get him to the hospital in time. Understand?"
Under Mad-Eye Moody's intense gaze, the students nodded hurriedly.
"Since you understand, start writing it down!" Mad-Eye Moody barked.
The classroom fell silent, with only the sound of quills scratching against parchment. No one dared to ask any more questions for the remainder of the class.
This continued until the bell rang, and Mad-Eye Moody left the room. The young wizards let out a collective sigh of relief and began to chatter excitedly.
"Good heavens, did you see the way Professor Moody cast that spell? It was absolutely terrifying!" Seamus recalled the scene of Mad-Eye Moody using the Killing Curse, shuddering involuntarily.
"What's so terrifying? He just killed a spider," a nearby student remarked.
"That was the Killing Curse. If Professor Moody had used it on you, you wouldn't be saying that," Seamus said, his voice tinged with excitement.
Apart from a few young wizards trying to appear brave, most of the students discussed the spells with a mix of awe and fear.
The only one who seemed genuinely thrilled was Malfoy. As he passed Ron's desk, he deliberately turned to Goyle and Crabbe and said loudly, "Those Unforgivable Curses are no big deal. My father taught me them long ago. I can assure you, I knew them before I even came to school; I just never had the chance to use them!"
"But for some people, the Killing Curse is quite impressive, like Weasley. He was absolutely petrified in class!"
At this, Malfoy cleared his throat and mimicked Ron's terrified expression from the class, shrilly exclaiming, "No, I can't... Professors!"
Goyle and Crabbe laughed stupidly behind him.
Malfoy was positively gloating, shouting, "I've never seen him so scared before. If I hadn't seen it clearly, I would have thought Professor Moody was about to curse Weasley!"
Malfoy's unfiltered words were heard loud and clear by Ron.
"Malfoy! Are you willing to Duel with me? I'll show you if I can use those Unforgivable Curses!" Ron, seething with anger, his face as red as his hair, pulled out his wand and was about to charge at Malfoy.
Fortunately, Hermione and Harry held him back, preventing a potential nosebleed contest.
Malfoy didn't even bother to respond, having already secured his verbal victory. He quickly led his two cronies away at an incredible speed—while he wasn't afraid of Ron, he knew they had no chance in a three-against-four duel.
Ron, still being held back by Hermione and Harry, shouted a few more insults, accusing Malfoy of being a coward for not facing him in a Duel.
After a few minutes of ranting, Ron's emotions finally calmed down. He then turned to Ivan and the others to explain.
"Don't listen to Malfoy. I wasn't afraid of casting the spell; I was afraid that if I did, Professor Moody would die!"
Ron spun his cowardice into a tale of necessity, claiming that if he had accidentally killed Mad-Eye Moody, Professor Dumbledore would surely have expelled him!
Ivan rolled his eyes.
Sure, sure... if you get carried away, Mad-Eye Moody will have to beg for mercy...
Harry reluctantly chimed in a few times to save Ron's face, so he wouldn't be too embarrassed.
"Ron, stop it. Being afraid of Unforgivable Curses is nothing to be ashamed of. They are extremely dangerous Dark Magic," Hermione said, not giving Ron any quarter.
"Enough! I told you, I'm not afraid of them..." Ron sounded exasperated, about to argue further with Hermione, but she cut him off.
"Professor Moody hasn't left yet. He might have heard what you said!" The young witches gestured towards the end of the corridor.
Ron's mouth snapped shut... because he saw Mad-Eye Moody turn his head, the blue magic eye staring directly at them.
