Chapter 58: The Ugly Dog
Chapter 58: The Ugly Dog
As Kyle spoke with Hagrid, the bewildered look on Conna's face never left.
Who am I, and what am I doing here? What are they talking about?
Wasn't the dog's appetite poor? Why are they suddenly talking about a three-headed dog?
And what is a three-headed dog anyway? There isn't one in this room.
"Kyle..." Conna seized the opportunity to ask her question while Hagrid was deep in thought, "What were you two talking about just now?"
However, Kyle didn't directly answer her question. Instead, he looked at Hagrid and gestured with his chin, "Take it out, don't hide it. I'm not a professional veterinarian, so I need to see the situation for myself."
"I don't have..." Hagrid wanted to resist, but thinking of his dog's recent condition, he sighed and said, "Alright, but you can't tell anyone."
"Of course," Kyle nodded. "I swear on Cedric's personality."
Hagrid, with his complex emotions, didn't catch what Kyle said as he stood up and walked out of the room.
But Conna heard it.
"Why did you swear on Cedric's personality?" The young witch asked, puzzled.
"Don't worry about the details," Kyle waved his hand, "If I had one, I would have used my own."
Conna remained silent and quietly moved to the side.
Hagrid returned quickly, and it seemed the place where he kept Luewei wasn't far from here.
Back in the wooden hut, Hagrid first drew the curtains, then lifted the mole-skin coat covering his arms, revealing Luewei hidden underneath.
Luewei was now about the size of a cow. Upon realizing it was brought into the narrow room again, it quickly hung its head and lay motionless on the ground.
Conna was startled. She hadn't expected Hagrid to actually bring back a large dog with three heads, and it was so... ugly!
The appearance of the three-headed dog, like other large magical beasts in the wizarding world, was uniquely hideous.
Luewei was no exception; its mouth, filled with sharp teeth, took up almost half of its head, and the flesh near its nose was folded over like a washboard.
"Could the three-headed dog have some Shar Pei blood?"
Kyle scratched his head, thinking uncertainly.
After all, he had never seen a three-headed dog before, and while Newt's case was magical, it didn't contain everything.
In fact, even in Greece, the three-headed dog was a very rare magical creature, as scarce as the Basilisk.
Kyle was certain that the person who sold it to Hagrid was an outsider.
"What luck." Kyle couldn't help but pat Luewei's adorably ugly head.
The dog's fur was stiff, and the feeling of touching it was like rubbing an old shoe brush.
The texture was far from that of Great Dane's.
The little guy was quite fierce. After realizing its head had been rubbed, it opened its mouth and bit towards Kyle's hand.
Kyle dodged and gently patted the middle head, "Calm down, I'll give you something good to eat later."
Luewei immediately quieted down and whimpered "Woof woof" at Kyle.
"How about Mortar Rat Meat Jerky?" Kyle thought for a moment and said, "The texture is firmer than beef, you should like it."
"Woof woof..."
"Thirty Knuts?" Kyle frowned, "That's too much. I only have nine Knuts, so you three can split it evenly."
Kyle was haggling with Luewei, while Hagrid, standing nearby, watched with wide eyes. He glanced at Luewei and then at Kyle, disbelief in his voice as he said, "Mr. Scamander taught you this too?"
Kyle merely smiled and remained silent.
In the magical world, many knew that Chris could communicate with magical creatures, but Chris publicly attributed this skill to Mr. Scamander's teachings.
Since Newt had never publicly denied it, people naturally believed this explanation.
In their eyes, it was only natural for Newt Scamander, the greatest magical creature master of the century, to possess skills that others lacked.
Only a select few knew the truth, like the Weasley couple, the Newt couple, and possibly Dumbledore... Scratch that, not sure about the last one.
Hagrid was clearly not among those in the know.
"Merlin's beard, it seems Mr. Scamander really has high hopes for you," Hagrid said with a hint of envy. "I've begged him for ages to teach me how to talk to magical creatures, but he never agreed."
"It's just a little trick, Hagrid," Kyle said with a smile as he took out some Mortar Rat Meat Jerky and fed it to Luewei. "I believe that even if you can't understand its words, you must know what it's trying to express."
...
"Yes, I can," Hagrid said proudly. "I always know what Luewei wants, and Luewei understands me. It was so mischievous when it was little, but as soon as I started singing, it would fall asleep."
To prove he wasn't boasting, Hagrid demonstrated by gently patting Luewei and starting to sing.
Then, Kyle clearly heard Luewei's words.
"Here we go again, here we go again, my head hurts so much," Luewei said.
"Go to sleep, you'll feel better when you sleep..."
"Sleep, quick!"
All three of Luewei's heads closed simultaneously, and within seconds, it was snoring loudly, its actions so practiced that it was almost pitiful.
"See, it's asleep now," Hagrid said happily.
Kyle gave a dry laugh and, seeing Hagrid's joyful expression, decided not to reveal the truth. Instead, he brought the conversation back to their previous topic.
"It's grown so big, Hagrid," Kyle said, stroking Luewei's head. "You must have noticed too, ever since we entered the room, it's been in a low mood. You need to release it into the Forbidden Forest as soon as possible."
"I know, but I'm worried..." Hagrid said with a hint of disappointment. "Luewei is still so small, what will it do without my care?"
Kyle raised an eyebrow, thinking that Hagrid should be more concerned about the other creatures in the Forbidden Forest.
Hagrid's gaze wandered for a moment before he continued, "And if I release it into the forest, Dumbledore might see it. What if he takes Luewei away?"
"Then release it deeper into the forest," Kyle suggested. "Don't forget that this is a special time. The Ministry's Aurors are investigating magical creatures of unknown origins. It's better for Dumbledore to find it than for them to discover it."
"That Greek guy isn't one of them," Hagrid said, his face turning red with emotion. "I checked, and he's not in the photos released by the Ministry."
"But the Aurors won't care about that," Kyle said calmly. "What they care about is that you bought a three-headed dog of unknown origins just before those people were arrested."
