Chapter 58: The Gap Between Path Protectors, Brother Two!
Chapter 58: The Gap Between Path Protectors, Brother Two!
Su Changqing approached the temple entrance and looked up.
Two figures sat by the campfire: a young man in dark robes and a middle-aged man in armor.
Their presence was clearly not to be trifled with, but unfortunately, this was the only place to rest for miles around.
Su Changqing took a step forward, clasped his hands, and apologized, "It's dark and the road is long. I apologize for the disturbance, gentlemen."
"No problem, meeting is a form of friendship. Sit down."
The young man had a gentle smile, but his eyes turned cold when he noticed the fresh blood on Su Changqing's shoulder.
"Master, take it slow."
At this moment, Uncle Fu, with a smile, quietly stepped in front of Su Changqing, his eyes scanning the two men by the campfire, a hint of seriousness in his gaze.
The young man, while formidable, was no match for Uncle Fu. However, the middle-aged man was different!
"Great Saint!"
Uncle Fu's eyes narrowed, a cold light flashing in them.
To encounter a Great Saint in the middle of nowhere in a dilapidated temple seemed too much of a coincidence.
He dared not be careless, and his entire aura locked onto the two men in front of him.
Should anything go wrong, he would act instantly!
The young man and the middle-aged man immediately sensed the Great Saint's aura locking onto them and looked at Uncle Fu with a mix of curiosity and suspicion.
"Where did this old man come from?"
"I don't know, you should ask your father."
"Why is he locking his aura on us?"
"Maybe he doesn't recognize you as the Su family's Second Young Master and is afraid you might harm your younger brother?"
The young man's lips twitched, his gaze on Uncle Fu becoming peculiar.
Indeed, the two men in the temple were none other than Su Zian and his path protector, waiting for Su Changqing.
After their parting at the academy, Su Zian had led the Su family's people to ambush a group of Buddhist monks.
Though a few managed to escape, Su Zian had no interest in pursuing them.
For him, nothing was more important than Su Changqing's return.
"You go talk to him. We're all on the same side, no need to be so tense."
Su Zian whispered.
"Go yourself."
Chu Feng glanced at Su Zian and whispered back, "I'm here to protect, not to do chores."
Three black lines appeared on Su Zian's forehead as he glared at Chu Feng, then sighed in frustration.
Path protectors were all the same, his and his older brother's included.
Apart from protection, they handled nothing else.
"Meeting is a form of fate. Uncle Fu, there's some food in the bag. Share it with everyone."
Seeing the silence, Su Changqing smiled and spoke.
"Of course, Master."
Uncle Fu smiled and took a few rice cakes from the bag, distributing them to everyone in the temple.
As he passed Chu Feng, his eyes carried a warning and caution.
Xuan Qingzi took the rice cake with a smile, not finding it unusual.
However, Su Zian was stunned, looking at the rice cake in his hand and then at the diligent Uncle Fu.
Finally, he glanced at Chu Feng and whispered, "I have some wine and meat in my spatial ring. Take them out and share them with everyone."
"I'll share nothing with you."
Chu Feng's blunt refusal made Su Zian fall silent.
That's right.
Path protectors were supposed to have this kind of temper, weren't they?
Great Saints were at the peak of their power, and even the Su family had only a handful of them.
To have such a person as a path protector was a matter of personal connections and invitations.
You couldn't complain about their attitude, even if they cursed at you, you had to listen.
But what was happening now?
A simple word from his younger brother, and a Great Saint path protector was willing to personally distribute the food?
"Why is there such a big gap between path protectors?"
Su Zian glanced at Chu Feng beside him, his tone slightly wistful.
"There are two possibilities."
Chu Feng shot a glance at Uncle Fu and whispered,
"First, your father has a great favor with this person, a favor so immense that even guarding the path of cultivation can't repay it, so the favor has been passed down to your little brother."
"Second, this Great Saint has been impressed by your little brother and is willing to do more than just guard the path."
Su Zian's curiosity was piqued, "When did Su Nan ever do such a great favor for a Great Saint?"
Although there were two possibilities, Su Zian didn't even consider them.
Changqing had just left the mountain for the first time, and the path guardian had just taken up his post.
In such a short time, how could an ordinary Changqing have the means to impress a Great Saint?
Shaking his head, Su Zian didn't think about it further. Instead, he looked at Su Changqing and asked with a light smile,
"Brother, I see your clothes are stained with blood. Did you run into trouble on the way?"
Su Zian had been holding back his questions all day. He hadn't expected that just a few dozen miles from Green Hill Village, something could go wrong.
"Ran into a few bandits, but it was just a scare. I took care of them."
Su Changqing gave a brief explanation, then looked curiously at the young man and asked,
"Where are you headed? There are no villages down this road."
"The nearest place is Green Hill Village, fifty miles from here. Are you going there?"
For some reason, Su Changqing felt an immediate sense of familiarity and closeness, even though it was the first time he had met this young man.
Shaking his head, Su Zian smiled, "I'm waiting for someone."
"In this deserted wilderness, it might take a while," Su Changqing chuckled.
"No, I've already waited long enough."
Su Zian smiled, raised his hand, and with a gentle wave, the jade pendant around Su Changqing's waist fell into his palm.
This was his personal jade pendant, which he had never given to anyone except Changqing.
"Is this—"
Su Changqing was taken aback, then exclaimed in surprise, "Is this the person Master spoke of?"
He had been wary of these two men, but now that he knew they were the ones his master had mentioned, his wariness vanished.
"You are about to enter the sect for cultivation, so of course, I have a gift for you."
Seeing Su Changqing's delighted expression, Su Zian's face broke into a warm smile.
Uncle Fu, who had been suspicious, was about to speak up but was stopped by Chu Feng's whisper in his ear.
"Someone from the Su family? Changqing's second brother?"
Uncle Fu's heart, which had been on edge, finally relaxed. He glared at Chu Feng, who was standing nearby.
He had been so worried about these two suddenly attacking, only to find out they were family?
Realizing this, Uncle Fu shook his head with a mix of amusement and frustration and sat down nearby.
Su Changqing, after his initial joy, hesitated and said,
"Master once said, 'No reward without merit.' We have never met, so why would you give me such an opportunity?"
Su Zian smiled and patted Su Changqing's shoulder, "I'm giving you this, so take it."
"If you must know, it's because I have a connection with your father. You can call me Second Brother."
Su Changqing's eyes widened in realization.
He had been wondering how his straightforward father could have the connections to get him into the sect.
Now it made sense. His father must have visited a relative and seen that their child had made something of themselves. Using that connection, he had secured a place for him.
With this thought, all of Su Changqing's doubts vanished. He bowed to Su Zian and smiled brightly,
"Changqing, I greet you, Second Brother."
Hearing the "Second Brother" he had been waiting twenty years to hear, Su Zian's smile couldn't be contained. He laughed heartily,
"This gift will surely please you!"
