Chapter 579: I'm Not Just Teaching You, Hals!
Chapter 579: I'm Not Just Teaching You, Hals!
"The **Ministry of Magic** classifies certain **spells** as **Dark Magic** because these **spells** are generally highly destructive. Advanced **Dark Magic** like the **Killing Curse** requires the caster to have a strong intent to kill."
Ivan spoke confidently in the closed **Defense Against the Dark Arts** classroom, talking for several minutes before pausing, satisfied that he hadn't missed anything.
"That's all I know, **Professors**!" Ivan concluded.
Mad-Eye Moody looked at Ivan with a peculiar expression. His question was merely a pretext to discuss **Dark Magic** with the **students**, but Ivan had unexpectedly covered everything he was going to say.
"**Professors**?" Ivan asked tentatively, seeing that Mad-Eye Moody hadn't responded.
"Oh? You did well! Ten points to **Gryffindor**!" Mad-Eye Moody quickly reacted, his rough voice breaking the silence. He then turned to the other **students** and continued.
"As Hals said, many **Dark Magic** spells require the caster to have malevolent intentions to achieve their full power. This is why **Hogwarts** does not openly teach **Dark Magic**."
"I've seen many talented **wizards** who became enamored with the immense power of **Dark Magic**. They devoted themselves entirely to the study of advanced **Dark Magic**, leading to significant changes in their personalities."
"During my years as an **Auror**, I've captured at least two dozen such **wizards**. They are either dead or locked away in **Azkaban**!"
Mad-Eye Moody's sharp words, combined with his scarred face, sent a chill through the **young wizards** in the room.
The **Defense Against the Dark Arts** classroom fell silent until Ivan broke the quiet.
"**Professor Moody**, do you think **wizards** shouldn't learn **Dark Magic** at all?"
Ivan was curious about this **legendary Auror**'s perspective on the issue. Since the summer, he had been aware of the influence of the **Serpent's Eye** and **Dark Magic** knowledge on one's temperament, and he had been struggling with whether to continue his studies.
The **Slytherin** students also watched Mad-Eye Moody nervously, as many of them had learned a few **curses**, some of which fell under the category of **Dark Magic**.
"We certainly shouldn't learn those evil **Dark Magic** spells," Hermione interjected, unable to contain herself.
To Hermione's surprise, Mad-Eye Moody immediately cut her off. "No, **Hermione Granger**. I don't believe **wizards** should completely isolate themselves from **Dark Magic**."
"Are you saying you approve of us learning **Dark Magic**?" Hermione asked, surprised. She had expected a **legendary Auror** like Mad-Eye Moody to be adamantly opposed to **Dark Magic**.
"My point is that we must understand some **Dark Magic** to know how to defend against it!"
Mad-Eye Moody explained, hobbling on his wooden leg as he paced around the classroom, his eyes scanning each **student**'s face.
He paused for a moment before continuing.
"Just now, I was trying to warn you not to become obsessed with it or attempt to learn **Dark Magic** beyond your capabilities. It's best not to conduct private research. This is very important!"
"In fact, two days ago, I suggested to **Headmaster Dumbledore** that we start teaching some less dangerous **Dark Magic** to older students. It's better to have a **Master** guiding you than for you to fumble around on your own."
Mad-Eye Moody's raspy, somber voice echoed in the closed classroom. He didn't believe that outright banning the teaching of **Dark Magic** was a good thing, as these **students** would eventually encounter **Dark Magic**.
For example, the Restricted Section of Hogwarts is an excellent source for acquiring knowledge about Dark Magic. Every year, some clever young wizards manage to teach themselves a great deal of advanced Dark Magic just by reading books.
However, without proper guidance, they might go astray at any moment.
After Mad-Eye Moody finished speaking, the young wizards in the room began to whisper and discuss among themselves.
Ivan, however, found Mad-Eye Moody’s philosophy quite to his liking. He had always believed that there was no need to treat Dark Magic with fear. Appropriate study and research were necessary.
If it were truly to be completely banned, the headmasters of past generations would not have allowed so many advanced Dark Arts books to be stored in the Restricted Section.
The purpose of the Defense Against the Dark Arts class at Hogwarts might be to guide students in cautiously understanding Dark Magic, equipping them with the knowledge to protect themselves from harm.
Unfortunately, due to Voldemort’s Curse, most Defense Against the Dark Arts professors over the past few decades have not been able to fulfill their roles effectively.
"Alright... everyone, stop for a moment. If you have any thoughts, you can discuss them after class or come find me during your free time!" Mad-Eye Moody rapped his wand on the floor to regain everyone’s attention.
"Now, I want to ask a question. Does anyone know what the most heinous Dark Magic spells are?" Mad-Eye Moody asked, looking at the young wizards.
"The Imperius Curse, the Cruciatus Curse, and the Killing Curse! According to the Ministry of Magic’s regulations, they are all classified as Unforgivable Curses! If someone casts any of these on a person and is caught by Aurors, they will be sent to Azkaban!" Ivan was the first to answer.
Seeing Ivan once again jump up to answer without permission, Mad-Eye Moody’s scarred face wrinkled in annoyance. He continued, not in the best of moods, "Do you know why these spells are considered unforgivable?"
Ivan didn’t wait for Mad-Eye Moody to finish before he rushed to answer.
"One reason they are classified as Unforgivable Curses is that there are no counter-curses for them. For instance, if someone is hit by the Killing Curse, they will be instantly deprived of life, and this process cannot be reversed!"
"The Imperius Curse can be resisted with willpower, but during the last Wizarding War, many wizards who were controlled by the Imperius Curse caused significant trouble for the Ministry of Magic, which is why it is also classified as an Unforgivable Curse."
"As for the Cruciatus Curse, I think it’s because this kind of Magic that can torture someone to death is inhumane!" Ivan hesitated, then looked at Mad-Eye Moody.
"Is there anything I missed, Professors?"
"I need to remind you that I am not teaching you alone, Ivan!" Mad-Eye Moody glared at Ivan. "If you keep answering everything, what am I supposed to say?"
"Alright, Professors, I’ll be more mindful next time." Ivan felt a bit embarrassed, but the System Notification in his mind made it hard for him to stop.
Mad-Eye Moody, unaware of Ivan’s thoughts, assumed he had recognized his mistake and nodded in satisfaction. He then added, "You explained it quite thoroughly, but I need to correct one point, Ivan. The Killing Curse is powerful, but it requires a significant amount of magical power as a foundation."
"If you were to use it on me—"
Mad-Eye Moody glanced at Ivan and quickly swallowed his words, pointing his wand at Harry and Ron instead.
"I mean, if you were to cast Avada Kedavra on me, the spell would likely have no effect. At most, I might get a nosebleed!"
